Prospective Undocumented Graduate Students

Things to consider when applying to graduate school as an undocumented applicant:

• Does the institution have an undocumented students center? 
• Is there a history of undocumented students attending the institution or program?

Types of programs: 

• UC Berkeley offers over 120 graduate programs across multiple degree types: PhD’s, Masters, and Self-Supporting or Professional Degrees. Search our graduate programs. 
• Key differences among the programs are length of program, cost, and funding availability.

• Connect with your program of interest GSAO (Graduate Student Advisor Officer) and schedule a meeting as necessary to address any questions you may have. Contact information can be found on the programs website. Search our graduate programs.

How are programs funded? Do they require residency status?

• Check out our FAQs for Residency status questions when applying to UC Berkeley as an undocumented student. Every program is different, contact them directly if you have any concerns related to your status as an undocumented student in their program. 
• Connect with a diversity and community fellow to discuss any questions you might have about the application process. 
• Connect with current graduate student fellows and the UndocuGrads office to ask any funding questions you may have.
• Explore external sources such as fellowships and scholarships for undocumented students.

• Apply for an Application Fee Waiver if you are undocumented and demonstrate financial need. International students who will require an F-1 or J-1 visa when starting graduate studies are not eligible for a fee waiver. The deadline for fee waiver requests is November 30, 2024.
