I’m thrilled to announce the AfricAIED 2024 Hackathon by Kwame AI, a 1-month online hackathon in which teams will build open-source, AI-powered tools to help students prepare for Ghana’s National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) competition for a chance to win prizes — $1,000 (1st), $500 (2nd), $250 (3rd), and present their tools at the AfricAIED 2024 workshop on 8th July! This video is a demo built by the Brilla AI team to inspire ideas (special shoutout to Naafi Ibrahim for the implementation). Our AI reads Riddle questions in the voice of the NSMQ Quiz Mistress, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, PhD using a fine-tuned text-to-speech model, a student attempts to provide an answer, the AI transcribes with a speech-to-text model, assesses the answer and decides whether or not it is correct, all of this in real time. This AI tool could be extended with other outputs from the Brilla AI team (code, dataset, models) to simulate numerous riddles, questions in different rounds of the competition, multiplayer modes, provide detailed explanations for answers, among others! For those who watched my recent speech at the United Nations, you’d realize where this fits into the vision I shared about African students being able to have AI-powered, conversational learning support in African accents. This tool and hackathon together make another giant step towards its realization. Our goal is that at the end of this hackathon, the open-source, AI tools developed would be available to NSMQ teams across all Ghanaian schools to run locally on laptops without the internet as they prepare for this year’s NSMQ competition. We want to address the inequity problem in NSMQ prep where only the big-name schools have the most resources by leveling the playing field and giving all schools a fair chance of winning, leading to the democratization of preparation towards the NSMQ! Huge news!! I’m excited to share that team Kwame AI has 3(!) acceptances (2 long papers and 1 workshop proposal) at the 25th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED 2024) 🔥🔥🔥 (1) The “Kwame for Science” paper describes the real-world deployment and evaluation of our AI teaching assistant for science education that enables students in West Africa to get answers to questions and access past national exam questions. We are working on the next version to integrate generative models, add assessments, and make the AI available via WhatsApp, a more accessible channel. (2) The “Brilla AI” paper describes our AI Contestant which we built and deployed to compete unofficially, remotely, and live in the Riddles round of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Grand Finale (the first of its kind in the 30-year history of the competition), answered 1 of the 4 riddles correctly and placed 2nd (tied) unofficially. We are building Brilla AI 2.0 for rounds 4 and 5, and we will be coming bigger and better this year at the 2024 NSMQ in September/October! Watch out world 💪💪💪 (3) AfricAIED 2024 is the 2nd Workshop on AI in Education in Africa which will bring together educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and AI experts to discuss and collaborate on innovative ideas, best practices, and future developments in leveraging AI to enhance learning experiences and outcomes in Africa. We will be putting out a call for an online AI hackathon (with prizes) to crowdsource AI-powered tools to democratize preparation for the NSMQ and give all schools a fairer chance at winning the NSMQ.
