    Fundamentally Strong

Georgia’s imports and exports have been tested by tariffs, natural disasters and now a pandemic – but there are reasons for hope.

In an industry as interconnected and multifaceted as manufacturing, every single piece along the production line – big or small – is a potential weak link in the supply chain.

Think about a car, says Georgia Manufacturing Alliance (GMA) CEO and founder Jason Moss. What’s the most important part of a car? The engine provides the power, but what about the brakes? Or the steering wheel?

“We have found, through diligent study, the most important part of a car is the part that’s missing,” he says. “All it takes is one nut or screw or bolt or washer to stop production on a production line. … Any component that’s missing in that supply chain can lock it down. Having redundancy in the supply chain is a big deal.” (Supply chain redundancy involves maintaining excess capacity or backup to avoid disruptions.)

This is especially important for manufacturers in the aerospace and automotive markets, Moss says, which rely more on imported components in their manufacturing processes. And these are major markets for the state: Aerospace companies generated $10.8 billion in exports last year, making it the state’s top export industry – and making Georgia the nation’s fifth-largest exporter in the space. Automotive-related exports generate another $3.2 billion, mostly to Canada, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates and Germany.

The purpose of the Georgia Manufacturing Expo on June 13-14th is to celebrate manufacturing in Georgia, Most consumers, when given a choice, will buy locally manufactured goods in order to support job growth in their communities. Companies that manufacture consumer and business products in Georgia will be featured at the Expo and many will be giving away free samples of their products.

It is sad, but true, that most Georgia citizens are unaware of the broad spectrum of products that are made in our state. The hope is that by showcasing Georgia-made products, business and individual consumers will be more likely to purchase them when they shop, thus supporting with their wallets manufacturing jobs in the state. Each attendee will be provided a free directory of Georgia products to aid them in their purchasing decisions.

Consider some of the leading consumer brands that are made in the State of Georgia: KIA, Anheuser-Bush, Duracell, Frito-Lay, Coca-Cola, Mohawk, Club Car, Sherwin-Williams, Mars Chocolates, Kraft Foods, Honey Baked Ham, Sunny Delight, Pilgrim’s Pride, Mizuno, Bridgestone, Snyder’s Lance, Shasta Beverage, Miller/Coors, Shaw, Pepsi, Nestle Purina, General Mills, Briggs & Stratton, Wrigley’s, Simmons, Solo Cups, and Tyson. (How many of those were you aware of??)

Another important goal of the Expo is to make manufacturing careers “cool” again for young people. For many years, manufacturing has suffered from a poor public image. It is critical to the country’s economic future to promote manufacturing as a viable and well-paying career path for America’s youth.

The Georgia Manufacturing EXPO was held on June 13-14th at the Gwinnett Civic Center.

Based on the growth of our organization and the success of our event last year, we are expecting between 400 and 600 attendees. The group will be primarily manufacturing industry leaders from Georgia. We are partnering with other industry associations to promote this event such as AIA, ASID, HBAG, GAHBA, SDCA, NARI and The Blue Book. Getting more locally manufactured products specified on construction projects in the state is a great step in the right direction for sustainability.

Jason Moss, CEO of the Georgia Manufacturing Alliance (GMA), was named Gwinnett Technical College Alumnus of the Year for 2019. Moss was honored at the college during a ceremony on Oct. 11.

Moss attended Gwinnett Technical College in 1995 following his service in the United States Air Force, taking classes in Computer Aided Design (CAD). “This was the launching pad for me, to be able to do some really cool stuff,” said Moss. “I ended up teaching here at Gwinnett Tech. I taught Level I and Level II Auto CAD and really loved it.”

Moss pursued a career in sales where he came into contact with Georgia manufacturers. “I found that there was really not a lot of opportunity for manufacturers to get together and connect so I founded the Georgia Manufacturing Alliance.” Founded in 2008, GMA’s purpose is to connect Georgia manufacturers and support the industry by exploring best practices.

Moss was selected as Alumnus of the Year for his achievements with the manufacturing industry in Georgia.

Gwinnett Tech is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and is the 24th largest 2-year college in the United States. In January 2020, Gwinnett Tech will debut the mechatronics program to serve advanced manufacturing companies in Gwinnett and North Fulton counties.

GMA is a membership-based industry organization founded in 2008 to support Georgia’s manufacturing community. GMA provides monthly plant tours, educational sessions, tradeshows, and unique networking opportunities designed to help make profitable business connections for its members. The Georgia Manufacturing Directory, Georgia Manufacturing Summit, Georgia Manufacturing Calendar, and BuyFromGeorgia.com are additional resources produced by GMA.
