How does antivirus software work?

Norton Antivirus Software Filehippo scans and helps remove malware files that enter a computer, tablet or smartphone. Norton AntiVirus technology uses machine learning to determine if a file is good or bad, and can do so even if it’s the first time seeing that file.

Norton protection also uses “emulation” (running each file in a lightweight virtual machine) to cause online threats to reveal themselves – this happens in milliseconds as you double-click on files on your desktop. File signature data is now stored in the cloud, and Norton protection has undergone hundreds of optimizations on the antivirus engine to minimize impacting the user experience.

What is malware?

Malware is short for “malicious software.” There are many types of malware: Viruses, worms, Trojans, ransomware, and more. Learn how malware infects computers and mobile devices, how you can avoid malware, and how to get rid of malware from a Norton security.

How does malware get in?

How do you get malware infections on your computer or mobile device?

Malware can get in through a number of ways, and most of them happen when you’re connected to the Internet. Norton protection uses a combination of technologies to identify websites which may host malware before you visit the site, identify malware as you download it, and even if you ignore warnings, Norton is still watching the software you download to look for malicious behaviors and actions on your computers, tablets, and phones.

What does Norton antivirus software and security software help protect against?

Today’s online threats go well beyond just viruses. AntiVirus and malware protection from Norton LifeLock helps defend against all kinds of online threats, such as:

  • Virus: Norton protection helps block harmful software that replicates itself and spreads itself to other devices.
  • Worm: Norton protection helps block malware that replicates itself without using a host file (unlike viruses, who use a file).
  • Malware: Norton protection has defenses for all types of malicious software, including viruses, Trojans, worms, etc.
  • Ransomware: Norton protection helps protect against malware that encrypts a computer’s contents and then demands a ransom to restore them.
  • Spyware: Norton protection detects software that tracks and sends personally identifiable information or confidential information to third parties.
  • Adware: Norton protection helps block malware that’s designed to display unwanted advertisements.
  • Malvertising: Norton protection detects when malware is hidden behind online ads.
  • Trojan horse: Norton protection helps block Trojans that appear to be something they are not, often containing a backdoor component for future access.
  • Phishing: Norton protection has tools to detect phishing attempts, which are seemingly safe links that take users to malicious sites that gather personal data and login credentials, and can be found within websites, emails or even ads.
  • Pharming: Similar to phishing attacks, Norton protection detects pharming attacks that redirect users from a legitimate site to a malicious one.
  • Browser hijacker: Norton protection helps protect your browser against malware that changes your browser’s settings, or re-directs your web traffic.
  • Rootkit: Norton protection helps protect against rootkits that can enable an unauthorized user to gain control of a computer system without being detected.
  • Spam emails: Norton protection filters out spam emails on Outlook email clients.
  • Banking Trojans: Norton protection helps block and remove trojans that are known to target banking sessions.
  • Coin-miner: Norton protection helps block malware that uses someone else’s computing resources to run a coin mining script without the user’s consent (e.g. cryptojacking).
  • Downloader: Norton protection helps block online threats that call their C&C (command and control center) in order to download additional malicious payloads.
  • Exploits: Norton protection helps block specific techniques that are abused by malware.
  • Fileless threats: Modern online threats leave no traces in the file system by leveraging scripts and in-memory execution. Norton protection detects and helps remove them.
  • Formjacking attack: Norton protection helps block attempts to steal credit cards at online checkout.
  • Keyloggers: Norton protection helps stop online threats that attempt to steal keystrokes.
  • Man-in-the-middle browser attacks: Norton protection detects malware that hijacks a web session.
  • PUAs: (Potentially Unwanted Applications): Norton protection detects browser extensions or apps that are known to cause issues and uninstalls them.
  • Script-based attacks: (JavaScript, VBA, VBS, Powershell): Modern online threats use scripting languages instead of using files that are executables. Norton protection detects and helps block such attacks.
  • Social Networking Scam: Norton helps block like-jacking, a type of clickjacking, at Facebook.
  • Tech Support Scam: Norton helps block websites that mimic the official support of organizations.
  • Unwanted browser extensions: Norton IPS helps block malicious traffic caused by browser extensions.

Installation and interface

Setting up the tool is a fast and easy task since Norton does not give users the possibility of handpicking the components to install, unlike other av products. A bit of attention should be paid here, however. Since it is ad-supported, the program offers to install apps made by other software developers. It can run without them, so they can be excluded from setup.

Ever since the Windows 8 release, developers have started implementing the flat Metro UI look into everything, and Norton makes no exception. The interface is not cluttered, although it could have been better organized. Three large buttons in the main menu facilitate access to scanning, virus signature updates, and advanced settings, while another button-like frame shows the system and Norton CPU usage level, along with the trust level.

Scan types and configuration

Norton Antivirus provides different levels of PC scanning in accordance with the user’s requirements. It can focus on speed by verifying only important system areas for malware, look into the whole hard disk to be thorough, as well as scrutinize only suspicious files, folders or drives. An additional component is designed to scan the Facebook Wall for infected links, scams and hacking attempts.

The default scanning configuration can be modified by expert users in terms of exclusions (scan, real-time, signatures, file IDs), archives, rootkits and stealth items, network drives, heuristics, low-risk objects, tracking cookies, removable media, boot time, Symantec’s SONAR protection feature (cloud assistance), as well as updates, among others. Settings can be restored to default, while tasks and statistics can be examined in separate areas.

Additional security components

Notifications show the reputation level of downloaded files via Symantec’s Download Insight to determine whether they are trustworthy or not. Furthermore, the app integrates a toolbar (Norton Safe Search) powered by Ask.com to ensure safety while navigating the web, which also features a password-protected vault (Norton Identity Safe) meant to hold login credentials and other private data.
