L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica I'm actually not a huge chocolate person (although chocolate mousse is a whole different thing....and seriously up there with third base, going on the whole - sex being compared to chocolate cliche), but I was trying to kill some time, waiting for the 22 so I figured I'd check out Bittersweet I was eyeing the tiramisu and mousse, but was on a tight budget after my Shu Uemura shopping spree, so decided to get a drink. I went with my "sugar-perfected' gut intution and got a chocolate chai. It was incredible, and brought back some Cafe Organica nostalgia with the quality and art of the drink (rock on with the foam designs). If I was in the area again (may not be for another couple of months) - Bittersweet would be scribbled down on my mental to-do list. It made for a nice extra buzz, following my makeup-high. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica Actually, after having experienced the wonder that is Cafe Organica - I have to dock a star for Coffee to the People. Their cafe latte is decent, but it's no Organica. Nevertheless, Coffee to the People does a great job of resurrecting the hippie ideals of Haight from back when and I don't want to see it going anywhere anytime soon. Plus their sugar cookies are awesome and I've heard good things about the sandwiches. 4/3/06 Coffee to the People is right around the corner from me and when it had first opened, I remember being rather unimpressed with it's inside deco and vibe. All the posters, randomly hung up, seemed to try too hard, and reminded me of Scholastic ordering days back in Elementary school. However, I visited on a whim the other week, and the hype is definitely pretty truthful. It's the people that make this place. There's a very warm atmopshere inside and it's an ideal place to kick back and relax. Despite all urges to interpret the place as cheesy, I had an awesome time, as I sipped on my chai, watching a variety of musical and poetic performances. All of them - heartfelt and genuine - much like the audience. I felt like I was back at a college open-mike, and reveled in the feeling. I've even been mildly inspired to stop by sometime and share some of my own writing. (MILDLY) A great addition to Haight Street. There's an abundance of strong postive energy in the place- and when you leave - you feel strangely invigorated. -
L'avis 5 étoiles de Jessica I can't figure out what it is about Philz. I don't drink coffee. I don't live in the Mission. And Philz is never REALLY on my way to where I want to go; but there is something about Philz that always beckons me in. The much loved "Phil" and his family seem to have created such a loving and warm environment in this coffee gem of a place, that it's easy to see why people love to wander into Philz and hang around. Quickly becoming regulars - and taking their coffee regular - with a sprinkle of organic sugar. The outside of Philz is adorned with plants and benches, and almost stands out as an oasis - among the other shops near it. And they really do mean it - with their 'simple - understood , yet understated' mantra of welcoming everyone and anyone inside their place - a tough act to achieve in the Mission. And the coffee----- I swear I don't drink coffee - - but when I've decided that I need a quick caffeine pick-me up - Philz rocks.. Each cup brewed fresh and with a refreshing bout of great conversation. And it really is perfect. Fresh, sweet, and strong. The way coffee was meant to be drunk. The waking up cheesy 'Folgers' kind of coffee. The - ''if it was a perfect world' and those Folgers' coffee drinking, overly dramatic love-birds stopped playing games and really ended up together' kind. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica I loved this place! What happened? It all closed so mysteriously. I remember waking up early 4 days in a row - excited about grabbing a soy latte - only to see three other regular customers, confused and perturbed outside locked doors. Their coffee was amazing, so on product they deserve five stars, but closing so suddenly without telling your regular patrons isn't cool. 1st entry: I kept on reading outstanding reviews for Cafe Organica - and finally decided to check out what all the buzz is about. Well actually...truth be told - I needed internet - and bad! Cafe Organica was the closest at the time, due to internet problems at two other wireless cafes. As soon as I entered this tiny cafe - the counter person was quick to offer service. She let me use an ethernet cord with my lame computer, since it wasn't picking up a wireless signal and made an amazing chai - with an ornate leaf, drawn into the foam. It was delicious - and I've never had such helpful service at a cafe. 2nd Entry The next time I visted - I had equally as great of an experience. The man behind the counter was patient with my internet problem, friendly, and when neither of us could remember if I paid or not, he offered a cafe discount. I wish there was more food selection here, but know the first place to go, if my internet is being tempermental again. 3rd Entry: Another update: I HEART Cafe Organica. Heart squared. They're my go to place when things get rough (as rough as things can get in Hayes/Panhandle area - i guess). The staff rock, they make killer drinks, and always know how to make you feel at ease. I still wish they had more food, but the food they do have is pretty great. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica Like Cheers with caffeine. Everyone knows your name, if you take sugar and cream, and why you have big bags under your eyes. A real homey local coffee shop, that survives through those that make it their daily habit to stop by, pick up a paper, and chill out. Ali -the owner is warm and genuine and has created a very real sense of community in the neighborhood. The staff reflect this same sense of genuine-ness, and are always warm and quick to serve you . This past weekend, after drunken debauchery at one too many bars, I was reminded why alcohol and I don't work. I lost my ID and my keys. With no way to get into my place and a dead phone and computer, I was forced to wander around until my roommates returned. Coffee Central was my second stop. I sat outside, watching the regulars come in and out and chatted with some of the staff about my plight. I'd already downed a couple of chais at Philz, so was running low on cash, but I felt at ease just sitting and taking in the scene. If you are a little bit more responsibel than me and have cash (keys and ID) - Central is a great place to take it. Their soup and baked goods are fresh and delicious and their hot drinks are served with love. -
L'avis 3 étoiles de Jessica Update: Someone from Cafe Madeleine messaged me not long after I posted my review to offer a kind explanation of how/why they price their side salads the way they do. It definitely made sense. A side salad is probably not the way to go. If you're interested in a salad - I would recommend one of their full salads (I know my co-worker adores the burrata salad here). I truly appreciate Cafe Madeleine taking the time out of their schedule to respond to my review and it's evident that they really care about their business and satisfying their customers. Trust. Original review: Cafe Madeleine is decent for desserts - but I was really disappointed in my salad today. I ordered a side salad with tomatoes and I asked if I could hold off on the tomatoes - but have butter lettuce as well. They said they would charge me a dollar. I figured that it was an addition - so why not. It turns out - that they'll charge you a dollar just to substitute different lettuce. My "salad" cost $5.45 for a small box (so tiny!) of about 10 pieces (literally) of butter lettuce drizzled in an unappetizing balsamic vinaigrette (they don't ask if you want dressing on the side.) There was nothing else on the salad. Nothing. There are far too many decent spots in the city that serve up salads with a side of love - to settle for loveless lettuce. Trust. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica The place to be in the Inner Sunset. Right next to the long carb fiend-ing line outside Arizmendis, Beanery is where you'll find the Inner Sunset locals. There are babies, young parents, hippies, professionals, grandmothers, grandfathers, - and everybody in between sipping on their beanery brew, watching the Inner Sunset come alive - each day. The interior is dark, but warm - and smells like fresh made coffee. Early in the morning, if you can grab a seat - sit tight. Though I've yet to try the coffee here, I love popping in for an iced chai - on the weekend. An always perfect propellant for a walk to the park. -
L'avis 3 étoiles de Jessica A decent place to spend a warm sunny Sunday afternoon in the Financial District. Their front patio woos the sun well, and paired with their five dollar big glasses of sangria - it's a welcoming spot to just chill and kick back. Their servers are mellow and their menu is sprinkled with healthy ordering items, as well as brunch items - so if you're looking for a casual eatery to brunch and lunch it - The Creamery works. The view isn't exactly the nicest (though you do get to peer out onto some fun before and after ball-game antics), and their menu isn't exactly wowing - but The Creamery with it's rustic wood interior and exterior has it's own distinct charm. L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica If I was to plan an epic Jessica afternoon - full of hot tea, art, good music, and just good vibes - I'd invite everyone out to The Summit, The place is huge and unique. The staff are endearingly cool, easy-going, cute, and sweet. Their couches and seating are inviting and comfortable. They carry an outstanding list of free reading material (Found is such a what's up magazine). Their art is local and rotates. The ceilings are vaulted and conjure up images of NYC with an SF twist. Their coffee selection is impressive. They have wi-fi. And at one point this place was open quite late. The Summit is such a seriously What's UP Spot. I hope San Francisco realizes what a remarkable spot the Summit is because I'm excited to see how it evolves into more of an event space. The only things I'd suggest that the Summit need to improve upon - would be to encourage them to keep their later hours, have a bigger tea selection, and for them to diversify and bulk up their pastry/food selection. Trust. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica This particular La Boulange might be one of my favorite locations in the city. The close proximity to the office is enticing and with the glorious San Francisco weather that we've been having lately - their intimate outdoor patio soaks up the sunshine beautifully. These past couple of months I'm been trying not to eat as many bread/gluten items. La Boulange's pastry and freshly baked bread are always consistently delicious looking. And so - rather than painfully eye-molest them in line - I've resorted to just avoiding all La Boulange's altogether. That is until last week. Last week - during a business meeting here I noticed that La Boulange - now carries a flavorful quinoa salad, full of chopped tomatoes and greens, as well as a monthly special of tilapia with an eggplant puree. Score. I stopped in today to purchase both and was pleasantly pleased by both. The tilapia was light and flavorful and the eggplant puree paired nicely. The quinoa salad was a decent size and very filling. Both were not cheap - but together - both proved to be a substantial afternoon meal which I am confident will carry me well into the rest of the evening. I was also excited to see that La Boulange seriously brings it when it comes to condiments and toppings. From olives, to tiny pickles, to a massive nutella jar (drool) to fresh jam etc - they have it all - in an accessible serve your self - format. I still fiend after La Boulange's carb-ilicious pastries and desserts - but I'm excited to start venturing into more fresh veggie/fish friendly territory here. Trust. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de Jessica I'll always have a fondness for the La Boulange oasis in the Westfield Mall. I love that it's separate from the rest of the eateries in Westfield and that they even carry the seasonal menu items that you can find at other La Boulange businesses in the area. I ordered the Cioppino and it was fantastic. A little oily - but full of fresh hearty scallops, lobster, and cod. It was such a lovely break from the day and so nourishing. My day instantly brightened with that warm seafood broth. Trust. -
L'avis 3 étoiles de Jessica I still adore the Morning Glory bread here. It's consistently moist and packed with coconut, carrots, nuts, raisins, and other deliciousness. It's well worth checking out. Bernie's brownies and pecan bars are not so what's up though. They may look enticing and moist, but after ordering both today, and indulging in two unsatisfying bites - I have decided that I would not order them again.They tasted as if they'd been sitting behind that glass counter - longer than they should have. I have to admit that I'm almost relieved to discover that the pastries here look better than they taste (outside of the Morning Glory). It can be dangerous having alluring desserts so close by. Trust.
