√ Roquette, a global plant-based ingredients producer, and Bonumose, a provider of enzymatic solutions for rare monosaccharide production, have signed a cooperation agreement to advance the development and scalability of tagatose, a natural-origin sweetener with health benefits. √ The partnership combines Roquette's extensive experience in starch and starch-based sweetener production with Bonumose's enzymatic technology for high-purity tagatose. √ Tagatose closely matches the taste, flavour and cookability of white sugar while offering health benefits such as reduced calories and an ultra-low glycemic index. √ Tagatose, a rare monosaccaride found naturally in small quantities in dairy products and some fruits, has been clinically shown to offer health benefits over traditional sugars, it has a low glycemic index, fewer calories and may have prebiotic effects. √ However, large-scale production of high-purity tagatose has proven challenging. Bonumose's enzymatic technology, combined with Roquette's expertise in starch-based sweetener manufacturing, is expected to help overcome these obstacles. √ The partnership comes as food and beverage companies face increasing pressure to reduce sugar content in their products aimed at growing consumer demand for healthier options. The European #algae sector is bubbling with #innovation. This summit was a great chance to inspire and learn from each other. At Veramaris we know what it takes to turn innovation into a commercial success. I shared a few insights from our journey. But I learned so much from others too: 🦠 Algae has both a light side (phototrophic) and a dark side (heterotrophic)... ☀️ On the light side: Brilliant Planet use algae to sequester carbon deep in the deserts of Morocco; and Aliga Microalgae use algae to make exciting clean label, whole food ingredients… 🌙 On the dark side: Kuehnle AgroSystems Inc. ferment algae to produce natural Astaxanthin for aqua feed; and of course Veramaris are fermenting natural marine algae to make omega-3 EPA & DHA for healthy fish and shrimp! ⭐️ The ‘force is with us’ all! 🇺🇸WANTED : Leading distributor of food ingredients in the U.S.🇺🇸 As an ingredient supplier from The Netherlands, we were contacted last week by a global company interested in our ingredients for its factory in the United States. They indicated their desire to buy our ingredients locally in the United States. The question was whether we work together with a US-based distributor or broker. Unfortunately we had to tell: NO, not yet…, The request came from a manufacturer which has its factory in Oregon. The North-western part of the U.S. So if you can advise a company in that region, we would appreciate it but a distributor who acts nationwide would be even better! Any thoughts on which distributor we should contact or be linked to? Climate change poses an increasing threat to our food system, with risks such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and rising sea levels, leading to shortages and rising food prices. We call on the EU leaders to take this seriously and to stay the course set out in the European Climate Law, which commits to a shift to a climate neutral economy by 2050, and to fully implement the European Green Deal. We also advocate for a science-based target of net reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by 95% by 2040. This will guide businesses and governments to invest in sustainable solutions and transition to a nature-positive economy.

The ambitious initiative supports Belgian farmers in implementing more #sustainable farming practices and promotes #regenerative agricultural principles that contribute to enhancing soil health and reducing environmental impact. BENEO’s Corporate Sustainability Manager, Nathalie Sadin comments: “Considering the entire value chain of our functional ingredients is key to supporting the transition towards a sustainable food system. This includes how the crops that we later process are grown. There is no doubt that the search for more sustainable cultivation methods requires close collaboration with farmers. Zoetis Releases 2023 Sustainability Report to Share Progress in Building a Better Future for Communities, Animals and the Planet -Increased colleague-reported volunteer work by 81% to 16,611 hours -Through $8.3 million in grants, the Zoetis Foundation supported 28 initiatives impacting 19 countries to advance opportunities for veterinarians and livestock farmers through education, well-being, and livelihood initiatives -Brought to market innovative diagnostics, vaccines and parasiticides to support livestock producers’ animal health and productivity goals -More than 30% of the company’s total electricity use was supplied by renewable sources which includes on-site solar arrays installed at seven facilities – moving Zoetis toward its goal to use 100% renewable electricity by 2030 -Replaced plastic with paperboard for rabies vaccine packaging at a key manufacturing site, cutting PVC plastic use by 8.0 metric tons and overall packaging by an estimated 2.5 metric tons annually #zoetis #sustainability #sustainabilityreport #animalhealth #esg #careandcollaboration
