Kepler Cheuvreux Credit Research team has initiated the coverage on Banco BPM, the third-largest banking group in Italy in terms of assets and client base. With a strong presence in Northern Italy, it ranks behind UniCredit and Intesa Sanpaolo. Since 2017, Banco BPM has significantly transformed its business model, notably reducing its NPL stock and improving its efficiency ratio. Despite substantial progress, there is room for further improvement, as these metrics still lag behind Italian and European peers. Banco BPM is now embarking on a transformative journey to establish itself as a leader in the SMEs and corporate, aiming to integrate recently acquired businesses and strengthen its market position in wealth management and life insurance. Banco BPM is now fully rated as investment grade, having benefited from significant rating improvements over recent years, thanks to its robust capital buffers, stable retail deposit base, and improving asset quality and profitability. Banco BPM’s euro-denominated Tier2 and AT1 bonds present a balanced curve, a favourable call exercise history, and a positive credit story. The bank has six Tier 2 and four AT1s bonds. Kepler Cheuvreux Credit Research is composed of experienced credit analysts and is focused on four pillars: 1/ High-Yield bonds 2/ Corporate hybrid bonds 3/ European banks (additional tier 1 and tier 2 bonds) 4/ European insurers (RT1 and tier 2 bonds) Contact: Sébastien BARTHELEMI and Cyril Benayoun, CFA.
