Flint, MI— The Flint City Clerk’s Office has confirmed the five candidates who will run for the 3rd Ward City Council seat following a recall effort against incumbent councilmember Quincy Murphy.

The names, revealed on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, include Beverly Biggs-Leavy, A.C. Dumas, LaShawn Johnson, Richard Jones, and Kerry Nelson, alongside Murphy.

The recall election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.

Candidates must be registered electors of the city for one year before the filing deadline, residents of the third ward, and continue to reside there until the end of their term.

The City of Flint began accepting nominating petitions to replace Murphy on June 14, 2024.

On June 5, 2024, Genesee County Clerk/Register Domonique Clemons said 533 of the 770 petition signatures were valid, exceeding the 513 needed to initiate the recall election.

In February 2024, two petitions were approved against Murphy. One states that he voted to allocate ARPA funding for revenue replacement, and the other says Murphy accepted a lawn mower valued at $11,000 from the CEO of Ashley Capital and subsequently voted to approve a Brownfield Plan for the company.
