Hi No Code Gang: Gamification and Leadership, First Attempts About two months ago, I decided to build a close-knit in-house team. Previously I: - Hired contractors who came and went. - Delegated team communication to the project manager. - Was detached from project details and company community. Team members only knew each other within their projects. Casual calls had low attendance. I wanted to bond with everyone I worked with, grow together, vibe, exchange memes, and more. Plus, I wanted a team to eventually switch to our own products after custom development. Honestly, I used to see people as functions. Looking back, that approach makes me sick. In the last two months, everything has changed: 1) HR It started with HR. Besides asking about experience and values, I asked: who would I be friends with? Who would I want to spend every day with? 2) Hi No Code Game With my friend and mentor, Volya, we tested the idea of turning work processes into game mechanics: - Work would be more fun. - Challenges would seem easier, like a "Level 10 boss" is easier than an angry client. - Achievements in the game are more exciting than hitting KPIs. - The game environment is immersive, reducing distractions. But we thought it was too early and needed basic processes first. However, I couldn’t wait, bursting with ideas. Here’s what we’ve implemented so far: 1. Professional Names:   - Female Developer: DEV Girl   - Male Developer: DEV Boy   - Female Project Manager: PROD girl   - Business Development Male: BIZboy   - Designer Male: UX boy   Grades like in rap lol:   - LIL - Junior, beginner   - OG - Mid-level + 2. Selected Universe for Reference: GTA. We started building around this theme. 3. Custom Avatars in Midjourney, themed around GTA and the Bloods gang with red symbolism. 4. Mission = Milestone in a project for the project team or a sale for bizdev. Problems in projects = missions too. 5. NoCoins - in-game currency earned for daily reports, completing missions, or values. They can be exchanged for merchandise or money. 6. Gang Gatherings = weekly calls where everyone shares how their week went and posts weekly photos in a thread. 7. City Map Exploration = learning new tools or market segments, or starting internal projects. 8. My Favorite Mechanic - Not About GTA: Everyone wishes each other good morning every day for over a month! Love it! It’s fun to see which mechanics take root in our culture. It's been an amazing 7 years as the CTO of Supermetrics. But as with all things, it's time to learn new things and impact our wonderful company in different, almost Impossible ways. Looking back now, it seems so long ago that I moved to Finland to be CTO on July 4, 2017 for ten brilliant people working for Mikael Thuneberg.  We've come a long way, and we've gone from 6 developers to over 120 in our Product Development. Late last year, we hired a fantastic Chief Product Officer in Matt Simmonds, not only has Matt set a clear direction for our product teams, he is technically savvy and a great steward of our engineering teams. With Product Engineering reporting to Niklas Lampén, our VP of Engineering, Matt will now oversee a combined Product, Design, Product Marketing and Product Engineering inside a single function, something I've always wanted. I am so very confident that all our customers are going to be delighted with some of the new features, integrations and applications we are about to release. Every monthly product session is a joy to attend. What now for me? Being CTO at Supermetrics has been a career highlight. I don't know if I could have asked for a better person to work for and help grow Supermetrics with than Mikael Thuneberg, from coding together late into the night, to partying after a great win. Heck, I never thought I would receive CTO of the Year for Finland in 2021 on behalf of our amazing team. So it's kind of weird, but fitting, to also say that we will divide “CTO” duties across multiple people for the time being. Anssi Rusi and I created a new position for me that allows me to have a wider impact in the organization. Scaling an organization can fail simply because internal processes fail us, or things get lost between the business silos. We want to improve our systems integrations, reduce time to impact for employees with automations, cleaner processes, cutting through to what matters, and not doing things simply because “that’s how we’ve always done things”. Ultimately, everything we do to improve our employees' lives and happiness means we have time to do what really matters: helping our customers to be successful and drive growth. I will still continue to oversee security and infrastructure as well. We first thought of making it a traditional Chief Information Officer (CIO), but the role is wider and more complex and what I describe can sometimes feel like an impossible task to tackle. So with that in mind, my new role will be the Chief “Impossible” Officer for Supermetrics :) We will keep the "I" part ambiguous a bit (Information/Innovation/Impact), and yes, maybe we poke a bit of fun at titles which try to silo you. So, Thank You Supermetrics for allowing me to be your CTO for seven years, it’s been a heck of a ride! Thank You Anssi Rusi for having the faith in me to let me grow.

Requesting feedback = opening Pandora's box. You can receive valuable comments on your new CRM check-in process. Or, you can discover that the button color is too green (or blue, whatever) … This can be frustrating. But don’t let it overwhelm you. Instead, learn to manage feedback with a smile: 1. Be specific Instead of “What do you think about the new system?” try “How can we improve the patient check-in process?” 2. Leave room for constructive criticism Promote more “I think the check-in process could be faster if...” and less “Everything is terrible!” 3. Communicate clearly Instead of “It looks perfect (not really)” encourage the honest “I think we could improve it by… ” Feedback can be a valuable tool for growth in healthcare. The potential of AI in daily workflows was the hot topic of our discussions when Kenneth Madsø from Krescado AS visited us this week. I’m happy to share results from our survey of 54 product management professionals across across various company sizes and experiences. Here's a snapshot of the key findings: ⚠️ Main challenges that product teams are facing: 📈 Aligning product strategy with company goals. 🔍 Conducting effective user research. 🗂️ Prioritization and maintaining clear roadmaps. 🛠️ Product strategy & roadmaps: ✅ Most companies have clear goals aligning with their business objectives. 🗺️ Feature-based roadmaps dominate, but there's a growing shift towards outcome-based roadmaps. 🔄 Regular roadmap reviews are common, with a preference for quarterly updates. 🌐 Market & user Research: 🔬 Only one-third conduct user research weekly or monthly, with larger teams doing so more frequently. 🗣️ Qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys are the most popular research methods. 💡 Innovation management: ⚖️ A balance between innovation and maintaining operations, with smaller companies focusing more on innovation. 🤝 Collaboration & communication: 👥 Cross-functional teams are prevalent and lead to better alignment with business goals and improved information flow. 🔄 Regular retrospectives are a standard practice. 📊 Metrics & Performance: 📈 Metrics are partially defined for most, with a focus on customer acquisition, retention, engagement, and revenue. 🔃 A mix of quantitative and qualitative metrics is used to gauge performance. Concept test pre-testing? Is that a thing? 🤔 It is now and perhaps it always should have been. 🤩 Deep and thorough product concept testing can be time consuming and expensive, often involving big quantitative and deep qualitative studies. But sometimes it’s hard to know if you have given your great new product idea the best chance of being accurately assessed by consumers because of how you have presented it, rather than because of the inherent value of the product itself. GM Marketing and Innovation Sarah Koppens of New Zealand Skincare company Essano Limited faced just this dilemma with a new product concept (still under wraps, sorry 🤐) designed for an age-specific female audience. “We know the impact of a product or packaging visual is immediate and sub-consciously influences how the consumer then responds to the words in the concept test. So, we wanted to ensure we were using the most appealing imagery from a range of designs we had created”, she said. “It can be really hard in product testing to tease out the impact of the design or packaging that you show the consumer from the underlying concept itself." “Are people responding to the fundamental appeal and value proposition of the whole idea or mainly to the look and feel of the packaging in which it is contained?" “Obviously in-store, consumers will come to a decision based on both, but in this case we decided to pre-test our packaging and graphic designs using Stickybeak before then placing the concept test using the winner." 🙌 “This meant we could go a long way to eliminating the variable of graphic design from the consumers’ overall response to the ideas being shown to them.” “Stickybeak allowed us to do this incredibly quickly and easily amongst our Australian target demographic." 🌏 “Innovation is at the heart of much of what do at Essano so it’s critical that we are getting the most accurate consumer feedback from our concept testing as possible. Thanks to Stickybeak, we were able to progress into full quant confident that the concept boards presented to consumers were as visually compelling as possible”, she added. Be more awesome!
