For years, experts have recognized that modification or treatment (such as thermal or chemical modifications, painting, or impregnation) could adversely affect the fire performance of wood, potentially increasing its flammability. A new European Commission regulation, effective from February 10th, emphasizes the importance of testing all treated and modified wood used in panelling and cladding to meet the specified fire safety standards. This crucial step aims to mitigate the risk by ensuring that such materials achieve a minimum reaction to fire class of D-s2,d0, highlighting a proactive approach to enhancing fire safety in construction materials. Trondheim, Norway, with its eight floors and 10,500 square meters, provides space for 494 students divided into 220 one-room apartments and 137 semi-detached apartments, with all of the wooden cladding treated against risks of fire with bio-based NORFLAM® bio-based flame retardants by Nordtreat.
