Oceans, home to most of Earth’s biodiversity, are a vital source of life. Paradoxically, due to climate change, oceans are facing challenges that present profound impacts on global communities and ecosystems. Rising sea levels, increasing flood risks, and melting sea ice - all these challenges require new solutions and monitoring systems to protect and preserve our oceans and the communities that depend on them. With its SAR satellite constellation, ICEYE provides reliable and timely data that can be used to map oil spills, detect illegal fishing, monitor traffic and other immediate threats to marine wildlife - as well as to study long-term changes such as the melting of sea ice. Yesterday, #Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Texas, causing flooding along much of the coast and around Galveston Bay. Our team has been monitoring the storm since the end of June, acquiring 50+ SAR satellite images of impacted areas through clouds and around the clock. Based on the first release of our #flood extent & depth analysis, at least 3000 buildings have been affected in the Houston Metropolitan Area and coastal Texas. More flooding is expected as the remnants of Beryl move across the Ohio Valley and the Northeast, bringing heavy downpours and risk for flash flooding along the path.
