The test specification document gives an overview of the structure of the test, and a detailed list of the topics that questions can draw on. The specimen tests contain examples of the styles of questions that might appear in the live test, and closely replicates the live testing experience. We also provide past papers so that you have access to additional useful materials to support your preparation.
Our tests are based on the science and mathematics that you are likely to have already learned in your school studies, so you shouldn’t need to do too much additional preparation. We recommend that you read the test specification to see if there are any topics that you need to revise.
You should also familiarise yourself with the test format and style of questions. The Pearson VUE test player can be used to view the specimen test and ensure you know how to use the accessibility and navigation features.

The purpose of the sample tests is to allow you to familiarise yourself with the style of questions and the Pearson VUE test player. Together with the test specifications, they will also help you to identify topics that you need to revise in more detail when preparing for the test.
Although the ESAT and TMUA are based on the science and mathematics that you are likely to have already learned in your school studies, the tests are designed to be challenging in order to differentiate effectively between able applicants, including those who might have achieved the highest possible grades in school examinations. This might be the first time you have taken a test designed for students of your high level of ability, and you should not expect to score as highly on these tests as you would in your school exams.
