«I worked closely with Yaiza during my time at Busuu as part of the engineering leadership group. We both worked on different aspects of the product (B2C & B2B) but shared common challenges. Yaiza is a leader you need in your team, I would like to work again together, she's been great at indirectly finding my weaknesses just by looking at how she manages her team or makes decisions on difficult obstacles. Yaiza has been key in inspiring the engineering managers team, she immediately put the bar high and didn't hesitate to challenge the status quo. She actively participated in re-organising our career framework which has been adopted by the entire technology department at Busuu. It helped guide other EMs as well as engineers to be able to assess themselves among common values. Another cornerstone Yaiza has helped us resolve was how we approach Scrum at Busuu: especially around Fibonacci and ticket estimations in general, which seemed to have been done wrong in the past. It has helped shape Agile differently and indirectly it has improved our team's delivery. Finally, Yaiza consistently demonstrated strong leadership qualities, providing an approachable and accessible figure for discussions and guidance. I frequently directed my teams to consult with her to gain valuable perspectives and insights. Collaborating with Yaiza has been resourceful.»

Here's how you can foster a smooth working relationship with your boss through effective communication.
Understand how you manager operates. Most people are predictable in the way they behave and what they expect from you. Some examples: - If you know that every time you come up with a problem your manager asks you for 3 alternatives to tackle it, present the problems directly with those 3 alternatives and a recommendation. - If you know your manager reacts poorly if challenged in public, challenge them in private. - If you know your manager is worried about a certain topic, pay attention to that topic and be specially careful to keep them updated. You get the idea. The same way you take time to understand your colleagues and team to collaborate successfully with them, take the time to understand how to manage your manager.

Here's how you can streamline meetings and save time in Agile Methodologies.
I like to start meetings, especially those that might tend to turn into conversations without specific outputs, with one question: 'If at the end of the meeting we feel that it’s been really successful, what will we have achieved?' Or, in a simpler way, 'What does 'success' look like for this meeting?' It's worth spending as much time as needed to ensure the answer to this question is aligned. Otherwise, the meeting may progress in unexpected directions, with different people having different expectations and agendas, and most likely, nothing tangible will be achieved.

You’re trying to build a strong team. How can you create a culture of trust in the workplace?
Don't hide your mistakes. Do the exact opposite: draw attention to them, show how you fixed them, what you learned from them and how you will avoid them in the future. Nothing creates an environment of trust more effectively than seeing that kind of vulnerability in your manager. Because it gives you "permission" to do the same: to ask for help when you don't know how to do something, to admit that you screwed up and you don't know how to solve it... Just imagine the power of a culture where people forget about trying to appear smarter than everybody else and actually focus on doing their best and keep learning. Mind-blowing.

You’re leading a culture change initiative. What are the most common mistakes to avoid?
Explain the Why for this change many times. Articulate it in different ways, with different levels of abstraction and point of view depending on the audience, use metaphors... And repeat it. Then repeat it again. And again. When introducing a substantial change, it's very easy for the people working on it to have a very clear picture of why it's being done, what the implications are, etc. Because they are thinking about it constantly. It's easy to forget that the rest of the organisation has other priorities, this change is just a blip in their day to day. As a leader, if you are not bored of repeating the same messages time and time again, you are not communicating them often enough. With cultural changes, this is even truer.
