Decentralized RAN for Telecom Networks Telefonica and Nova Labs launched Helium Mobile Hotspots in Mexico. The Helium network is an open-sourced, decentralized network owned and operated by the people. Helium Mobile relies on a network of Mobile Hotspots. These hotspots are like “mini cell towers” deployed by subscribers. Anyone can participate in creating mobile coverage where it’s needed the most. When others connect to these hotspots, the hotspot owners earn MOBILE tokens. I think this concept will have its hype but then it will lose its attraction among the masses. For places where installing a mobile tower/cell is not financially viable for mobile operators, this concept will bring much needed connectivity and the people suffering from bad coverage will continue using it. But many will treat it as a business opportunity (free mobile service). For them, more subscribers mean more tokens so they will install the hotspots in already crowded areas and will eventually be competing for more subscribers to latch to their hotspots to sustain their hotspots. With more coverage and fewer subscribers, the hotspots won't be sustainable. Another aspect is the security of the subscribers. How well these hotspots will perform against cyber attacks, Man in the Middle (MitM) attacks? Usually, mobile towers are installed in a secure place. These hotspots will be installed by people in homes and surroundings, with complete physical access available. Excellent post by Javier Domínguez Lacasa about spectrum policy for midband Midband is the lifeline for Telcos to provide high-speed and reliable data services. There is no other spectrum band that offers the reach, bandwidth, and properties like midband. Unfortunately, this is a scarce resource and extremely expensive. As a scarce resource, regulators need to prioritize the benefits of the majority of users who connect daily to these services. Consider this: effective spectrum allocation can enhance network capacity by up to 50%, which directly improves service quality and user satisfaction. With 5G technology expected to cover one-third of the world’s population by 2025, the efficient use of midband spectrum becomes even more crucial. This band is essential for enabling advancements in IoT, smart cities, and autonomous vehicles, and its optimal use could significantly boost these developments. Moreover, the economic implications are substantial. A 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration can lead to a 1.5% rise in GDP in developing economies. The US government continues to support the development of the Open RAN ecosystem as it seeks to widen vendor choice for operators networks. The $420 million in new funding announced by the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is a significant boost for the development of open radio units. This initiative has two key aims: ▪ Commercialisation: Accelerating readiness for commercial trials to prove the technology's viability for wider deployment. This has been a long held reservation on the new technology. Many operators we speak with have concerns about wide level commercial deployments in existing infrastructure. ▪ Innovation: Supporting R&D efforts in Open RAN performance and capabilities to drive the technology forward. The investment is a clear signal that the US remains committed to fostering a competitive, diversified telecoms equipment market. It should open up opportunities for US-based Open RAN vendors and could create a more innovation-friendly environment following a difficult few months with some of the larger names in the sector #OpenRAN #telecomsequipment #NTIA #innovation #USinvestment

My favourite piece of news from last week mostly flew under the radar because it happened at TechNetCyber, a military cybersecurity conference in Baltimore Maryland. It was reported from the event that US DoD officials acknowledged there’s a natural appetite for the most exclusive, secure networks in the national security space. Their preferred solution: Open RAN. This comes after EchoStar Corporation (who bought DISH Network at the end of 2023) recently announced it was awarded a $2.7 Billion contract (!!) to provide communications services to the US Navy. Through its Boost Mobile brand, EchoStar will deliver critical 5G solutions, including devices from multiple manufacturers as well as a native 5G Open RAN network. US DoD policy is naturally aligned with the US government on Open RAN. I think what many industry observers have overlooked is the amount of additional funding this could generate. Indeed, the EchoStar contract alone is worth almost twice as much as the NTIA’s Innovation Fund. Any doubts as to the viability of Open RAN, especially with regards to security, can now be put to bed. CXTech Week 23 2024 News and Analysis https://lnkd.in/e8qSRdrY Covered this week: * LINK Mobility acquires the Portuguese company EZ4U and expands its presence in Europe * Podcast 72: TADSummit Innovators, Fabrizio Salanitri, HORISEN * TADSummit Podcast directory * People, Gossip, and Frivolous Stuff Lots of discussion on the Horisen interview: 1) A carrier knows the top 10/20/30 brands sending A2P SMS over its network (many carriers have already done direct deals with Meta and Google) as discussed on Unifonic Podcast Episode 5; 2) A critical point is carriers MUST take more interest and control over a critical service for its customers. The issue is not, 'it's only 4% of revenue.' The issue is, its 20% of the value customers perceive they receive from a telco, and the experience is getting worse. 3) The risk is SMS becoming the messaging channel of last resort because of price and poor customer experience. 4) Some in the SMS ecosystem have become hooked on AIT, spam, and fraud. MEF continues to ignore our work, which demonstrates they are complicit, despite Johnny's love for them. 5) A carrier can have a 'democracy' (better control through caring about customer experience and not handing everything over to a monopoly) with 5-10 aggregators with the sanction of ‘pump sh!t at our customers/network and you're closed off for good.’ 6) The end customer is critical in all this, it’s about delivering a safe and secure communications experience. The messaging industry has lost sight of that critical base requirement. 7) Analytics and collaboration are critical to make SMS better. Horisen does not make money on the traffic, that was sold off to Link Mobility. Because they own their platform, they are best positioned to generate the best analytics. 8) Horisen is not a complete answer, they are part of a solution that can make SMS better, and takes us in a direction away from AIT, spam and fraud. Breaking Barriers: Achieving Multi-Vendor Interoperability in 5G Networks with IRP In open RAN management systems, a technology-independent and multi-vendor Operations Support System (OSS) is essential. This approach ensures interoperability, flexibility, and cost-efficiency, enabling operators to integrate network elements from various vendors seamlessly. ◼ Benefits of Technology-Independent and NE Vendor-Independent OSS - Interoperability: Allows seamless integration and communication between network elements from different vendors. - Flexibility: Enables operators to choose best-in-class solutions without vendor lock-in. - Cost Efficiency: Promotes competitive pricing and better terms by avoiding dependency on a single vendor. ◼ 3GPP Integration Reference Point (IRP) The IRP concept is critical in achieving a technology-independent and multi-vendor OSS. It standardizes management interfaces, providing a common framework for exchanging management information across different network elements and OSS. ◼ Key Elements of IRP: - Standardized Interfaces: Facilitate consistent communication and data exchange. - Information Service (IS): Defines a technology-independent model for information object classes and attributes. - Solution Sets: Map the IRP Information Service to specific technologies and protocols (e.g., NETCONF/YANG, SOAP, REST). ◼ Fault Management Use Case Fault Management ensures network performance and Quality of Service (QoS) by detecting, isolating, diagnosing, and repairing faults. Implementation with IRP: - Detection and Reporting: IRP interfaces collect fault data from various vendors' equipment, enabling real-time monitoring and accurate fault detection. - Isolation and Diagnosis: OSS uses IRP to correlate alarms and events, leveraging a unified information model for efficient fault isolation and automated diagnosis. - Correction and Repair: Coordinated fault correction actions across multi-vendor environments, supported by IRP, allow for traffic rerouting and proactive maintenance. ◼ Example Scenario: In a multi-vendor 5G network, a fault in a base station triggers an alarm. Using IRP, the OSS isolates the fault and identifies a software issue. It reconfigures adjacent base stations from other vendors to handle the traffic, minimizing service disruption. A remote patch is applied, restoring normal operations. The SMO of the O-RAN ALLIANCE was defined on this basis of vendor neutrality. A technology-independent and multi-vendor OSS, supported by the 3GPP IRP concept and effective vendor-neutral network management such as O-RAN SMO, enhances network flexibility, reduces operational complexity, and ensures robust performance. The 3GPP Stage 1 Workshop on IMT-2030 Use Cases, held in May 2024, aimed to bring together stakeholders to define potential applications and requirements for the next generation of mobile communication technology, #6G. The GSMA, a global trade body for mobile network operators, likely presented a proposal outlining their perspective on 6G research and development (R&D). The GSMA proposal focused on outlining their vision for 6G R&D. This include: 🟥 Key R&D areas: Identifying critical areas for technological advancements in 6G. Examples include network performance enhancements like higher bandwidth, lower latency, and improved network slicing capabilities. 🟥 Collaboration framework: The GSMA have proposed a framework for collaboration between various stakeholders involved in 6G R&D, including network operators, equipment vendors, research institutions, and regulatory bodies. This would ensure coordinated efforts and avoid duplication. 🟥 Industry needs: The proposal have emphasized the importance of considering industry needs in 6G development. This involve collaborating with different industries to identify specific use cases and ensure the technology addresses their challenges and opportunities. I like Slide 12 - #5G has a long way to go! Five years since first 5G deployments, many operators have not deployed 5G at all. Beyond enhanced mobile broadband, new attributes of 5G, are in 5G Standalone. Exciting times ahead for OpenRAN and the future of mobile networks! While it might challenge traditional vendors initially, embracing open hardware platforms is crucial for driving innovation, reducing costs, and maximizing supply chain efficiency.
