I LOVE Greek and Roman mythology. They had some cruel punishments in Hades. My favorite was Tantalus who was placed in water up to his neck but if he tried to drink, it would drain away. And there was delicious food floating around his head that would fly out of reach if he tried to grab it. It's where we get Tantalize from.
