Founded in 1853, the University of Sydney is the oldest university in Australia and in the state of New South Wales.

The University of Sydney offers degrees in a large number of different areas, and has a number of campuses:

  • the Camperdown-Darlinghurst campus - headquaters of the University; where arts, science, education, medicine and engineering subjects are taught
  • Mallett Street campus - where nursing is taught
  • Lidcombe campus - formerly was an independent institution, the Cumberland College of Health Sciences, until the State government incorporated it into the university as part of the higher education reforms of the late 1980s; here are taught various fields ancillary to medicine, such as physiotherapy, speech therapy radiation theraphy, etc.
  • the Law campus near St. James station, just over the road from the NSW Supreme Court
  • the Conservatorium of Music, near the botanic gardens
  • the Orange Agricultural College, located at Orange in rural NSW
  • the Camden campus (on Sydney's rural fringe, to the southwest)
  • the Narrabi Plant Research Centre (located at Narrabi, way out in the outback)

The university also until recently operated the Museum of Contemporary Art.
