The fundamental part of a GNU/Linux system are source codes. However, for average users, there is a need to distribute programs in their binary form.

These programs are usually put together with documentation to form a software package. To make it easy to administrate these packages, which are often many, we need a package management system.

Package management system maintains a database of installed software and provides functions as installation of new software, uninstallation of software, compares versions of two packages, updates packages.
