== Image:Duke and Duchess of York visit Janesville, WI, September 28, 1941.jpg ==

I believe your image: (Image:Duke and Duchess of York visit Janesville, WI, September 28, 1941.jpg) is captioned incorrectly. In 1941 there was no holder of the peerage, Duke of York, as it lapsed to the Crown on December 11, 1936 when the Duke became [[George VI of the United Kingdom]]. I am also skeptical of the date that is listed as the date on which the photograph was taken. No [[Counsellor of State|Counsellors of State]] were appointed in 1941 therefore making it very unlikely that the King was out of the country, even unofficially. The most likely senario is that the date is incorrect and that the photograph is of George VI as Duke of York taken sometime before he became King. Another possibility is that the picture is of one of George VI's brothers. The abdicated [[Edward VIII of the United Kingdom|Edward VIII]] was Governor-General of the Bahamas during the War and was known to make visits to the United States with his American wife. Just an fyi. [[User:Demoares|Demoares]] ([[User talk:Demoares|talk]]) 09:31, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

==Tagging for WikiProject Trains==
Hey Slambo, how you doing, I do not know if I'm in the right place but you have Tagged and Assessed for WikiProject Trains the article [[Buenos Aires-Rosario-Córdoba high-speed railway]] in 20 December 2007, since then the article has been totally revamped with up-dated data, maps, legal images and references, for this reason I'm requesting a reassessment of same, please revise and/or let me know your thoughts, Kind regards ~ [[User:Moebiusuibeom-en|Moebiusuibeom-en]] ([[User talk:Moebiusuibeom-en|talk]]) 04:18, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

:Hey Slambo, thanks, you've hit it right on the spot!

:By the way, there is another article that may need TrainsWikiProject "importance" assessment and is [[La Trochita]], which you have assessed a while back on quality scale but yet this page has been "unassessed" for importance within "WikiProject Trains" and perhaps it should be taken into consideration. We have the [[Glacier Express]] and [[Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad]], which i believe are similar in characteristics and have been rated "High-importance" within WikiProject Trains. La Trochita, known as the '''Old Patagonian express''' internationally is not only a Heritage railway but still operates commercially between several towns as well and has been declared as a National Historic Monument in 1999. This "little train that could" is very valuable internationally from it's historical, cultural, and technological point of views and is in need of a (hopefully good) assessment on its importance.

:Furthermore, you have already assessed it on quality on 11 august 2006, (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=La_Trochita&oldid=71789427) and since then the article has been polished with added sources, maps, legal images, charts, bibliography and some editing, is there a possibility that this article can improve it's status on "quality scale"?!

:Kindly ~ [[User:Moebiusuibeom-en|Moebiusuibeom-en]] ([[User talk:Moebiusuibeom-en|talk]]) 16:29, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

::'''Assessments'''

::Hello Slambo, I've seen you'd been busy! I have made a list of articles which will need to be "Tagged within WikiProject Trains", there are over 100 articles on Argentine rail but i believe these are the most important, most are stubs or start on quality scale, and, if it may be of any help, on "Importance scale" within WikiProject Trains, which I have no idea what parameters are used, I have pesonally "rated"–to the best of my knowledge, based mostly on history, capital investments, ridership, routes covered, and future expansion plans–the following articles:

::'''Urban-Suburban lines:'''

::Tranvía del Este (Puerto Madero Tramway): Low • PreMetro E2: ??? • Tren de la Costa: Low • Línea Belgrano Norte: Med • Línea Belgrano Sur: ??? • Línea Mitre: Med • Línea Roca: Low • Línea San Martín: Low • Línea Sarmiento: Low • Línea Urquiza: Med

::'''Interurban and Long distance Lines:'''

::Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano: Med • Ferrocarril General Bartolomé Mitre: Med • Ferrocarril General Roca: Low • Ferrocarril General San Martín: Med • Ferrocarril Domingo Faustino Sarmiento: ??? • Ferrocarril General Urquiza: Low

::This is only a personal guide, please follow any parameters you may have, Kindly ~ [[User:Moebiusuibeom-en|Moebiusuibeom-en]] ([[User talk:Moebiusuibeom-en|talk]]) 20:46, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

:::OK, guess you know how to rate better than I, good going! Hey, did you have a chance to look at La Trochita, mentioned above, can rating be improved? ~ [[User:Moebiusuibeom-en|Moebiusuibeom-en]] ([[User talk:Moebiusuibeom-en|talk]]) 22:57, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

==[[Kew Gardens station (London)]] is not B-class==

Hi Sean. I would like to "down-rate" the [[Kew Gardens station (London)]] article (which you rated B-class in [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Kew_Gardens_station_%28London%29&direction=next&oldid=151438442 this diff on Sept 26, 2007]) to C-class or Start-class because there are no references for the history section. The next station up the line ([[Gunnersbury station]]) has a similar history section and it is only rated Start-class.

I raised my concerns on both the [[Talk:Kew Gardens station (London)|article talk page]] and the [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_London_Transport#More_citations_please.21|WikiProject London Transport talk page]] six weeks ago, but there's been no reply so far. I'm not a participant in that WikiProject. Is it OK if I simply down-rate the article without further notice? If not, please would you review the article to consider whether you still believe it deserves the B-class rating even though none of the history is verifiable? Thanks - [[User:Pointillist|Pointillist]] ([[User talk:Pointillist|talk]]) 21:56, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
*[[User:Slambo|Slambo]], thanks for reviewing the article. FYI [[User:DavidCane|DavidCane]] has now added references and restored the B-class rating. - [[User:Pointillist|Pointillist]] ([[User talk:Pointillist|talk]]) 21:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

==[[Wikipedia:Highly Active Users|WP:HAU]], Status, and you!==
As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the [[WP:Highly Active Users|Highly Active Users]] was taken offline. We now have [[Wikipedia talk:HAU#Status is now up and running|a replacement]] in the '''[[WP:QUI|Qui status system]]'''. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at [[Special:Mypage/Status]] which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a [[User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate|compatible]]) system - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to '''online''', '''offline''', or '''busy'''. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at [[Wikipedia talk:Highly Active Users|WT:HAU]]. :I intend to take a serious look at it; I want to give it the time it deserves for a full review and not one of the quick scans that I make for the unassessed category, so I've been holding it for a block of time when I can thoroughly review it. ==Fair use rationale for Image:PGE_timetable.JPG==
[[Image:Ambox warning pn.svg|70px|left]]
Thanks for uploading or contributing to [[:Image:PGE_timetable.JPG]]. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]] but there is no [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline|explanation or rationale]] as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Fair use|boilerplate fair use template]], you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found [[WP:FURG|here]].

Please go to [[:Image:PGE_timetable.JPG|the image description page]] and edit it to include a [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline |fair use rationale]]. Using one of the templates at [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline]] is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "[[Special:Contributions/{{PAGENAME}}|my contributions]]" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on [[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images.2FMedia|criteria for speedy deletion]]. If you have any questions please ask them at the [[Wikipedia:Media copyright questions|Media copyright questions page]]. == Revert ==

Considering the fact you're an administrator, I expect you to leave a suitable reason before reverting someone's "good faith" edit. Right? Anyways, the reason why I added that image was because 1)It has encyclopedic value 2)Increases global representation (India has largest railways in terms of passengers). So, I see nothing wrong in adding the image, but if you think otherwise, please give an explanation. --[[User:Emperor Genius|Emperor Genius]] ([[User talk:Emperor Genius|talk]]) 13:54, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm always impressed by your longstanding diligence of the train articles.

Anyway is there a "terminal railroad" type article on Wikipedia? As you no doubt know there are terminal railroads in almost every major city which handles common trackage and often a Union Station. I can't find anything along that line but thought I would ask first.

== Blacks on Tracks ==
Thanks for your comments. I am a 63 year old African American and Amtrak Conductor who has travelled extensively across the USA by train since the 1940's. From 1954 to 1957 I experienced discrimination first hand when I was thrown out of lounge cars on the "Royal Palm" and "West Coast Champion" because of my color while traveling alone. I also have vivid and painful memories of eating behind a curtain at one of two tables next to the blazing hot kitchen of the Champion's dining car. When the curtain was removed by law I stood in line waiting for a "colored" table to open up on the "Palm" while white passengers were constantly being greeted and seated. Both trains carried filthy unmaintained "colored" baggage/coaches (CW40 and RP1)where black passengers were forced to sit - a startling contrast to the stylish coaches reserved for white passengers! - while the trains rolled through the "Heart of the South".

Station facilities in Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta and other southern towns and cities were always noticeably "Separate and Unequal". I have always loved trains but segregation and surly white conductors sabotaged good feelings I could have cherished forever had I been white. Only when trains crossed the Mason Dixon line at Cincinnati (or Washington, DC) were black passengers treated with respect by the New York Central, Pennsylvania RR,
B & O, and other northern roads not bound by southern tradition.

Conductors and engineers were white male jobs while black males for the most part were only hired as porters, red caps, and menial laborers. That I am a Conductor on the very trains that made me feel so small and afraid - today's version of the Crescent, Silver Star, and Silver Meteor - is indeed ironic, so I go out of my way to make all passengers - especially children - have an unforgettable travel experience with no regrets. In the 90's I initiated "InnerCity Xpress - Adventures in Learning" at Amtrak to give Baltimore school children the opportunity to ride the train. It was very successful and a lot of fun!

I have written extensively about my experiences and love of trains and have been published in a number of publications, including The Washington Post, The Jacksonville Times-Union, Amtrak News, the National Railway Historical Society Bulletin, Orlando Sentinel, Baltimore Chronicle, Baltimore Urbanite, Baltimore City Paper, LIFE magazine, and even Classic Trains recently. Passenger Train Journal published "The Champion" in November 1987 and "Reflections in Black and White" in March 1988, "Night Train" (poem) and other articles and letters.

"Blacks on Tracks" is an epic poem about the total black experience on the railroad.

== Guidelines for rail terminology ==

Hi Slambo,

Forgive my ignorance because I'm relatively new to this game, but is there a set of guidelines for how we name things? I've been trying to tidy up articles and categories linked to German railways (mainly) and have come across some conundrums (or is it conundra?).

One obvious area of potential difficulty is the different terminology between English-speaking countries. For example, I had no idea that open wagons are called 'gondolas' in the US. In Europe, the only gondolas are ferrying tourists around the waterways of Venice! Redirection is part of the answer, but sensible, neutral naming can also help. E.g. 'Tender locomotive' (which was actually about tenders, not locos) was recently renamed to 'Tender (railroad car)' which reflects US usage. However 'Tender (rail)' is probably just as good and reflects common usage.

Another area is simply coherence. Why have 'Firebox (locomotive)', 'Pantograph (rail)', 'Cylinder (steam locomotive)', 'Tender (railroad car)' and 'Buffer (rail transport)'? Why not have all locomotive-related items that need disambiguation called 'xxxx (locomotive)' and all general railway/railroad terms called 'xxx (rail)'? I'm over-simplifying a bit, I know, but you get the idea.

Sorry a bit of a ramble! --[[User:Bermicourt|Bermicourt]] ([[User talk:Bermicourt|talk]]) 16:08, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

== Project Rains & William Milnor Roberts & Custer ==

Slambo,

I am new to trying to communicate with anyone on Wikipedia. It was bedeviling to try to find someone--or to find a way to communicate. In any event, my father and I read a brief article on William Milnor Roberts, who is my great-great-grandfather. Given his contributions to railroads here and in Brazil on the matter of trains, he is included in your project. Given that he was also among the first presidents of the American Society of Civil Engineers, he should also be connected to any project related to that.

Anyway, our family members have quite a bit of information on him but no one is inclined to write the wiki page. If someone wishes to use our materials, we can certainly help.

There is another connection, this time to General Custer. It is a complicated story but because of Roberts' involvement with
St. Louis railroad bridges--and his surveying of the Montana Territories--his family met Custer, his wife and the officers of his army. Mrs. Custer took a liking to Roberts' daughter, Annie, and engineered the courtship with and marriage to Captain Yates. Annie was the sister of my great grandfather. Somehow my brother was out near Little Bighorn at the time of Custer's death but, anyway, Yates dies standing next to Custer (as well as that could be determined). A book of Annie's correspondence was recently published.

For what it's worth, Annie spent the rest of her life accompanying Mrs. Custer on her lecture tours.

Anyway, please email me at jcrext@praxisllp.com if anyone wants help on the materials for wiki entries. <small>—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/68.225.10.190|68.225.10.190]] ([[User talk:68.225.10.190|talk]]) 00:13, 2 September 2008 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

== {{tl|TWP}} vs GWR loco classes ==

Sorry for giving you an evening's work! I spotted that one of the GWR classes didn't have the project banner, and then just worked my way through the (fairly large) template finding more and more! In future I'll try and add a little more detail (eg 'UK'/'locos') but I still don't want to add any quality assessments as I feel that this is better done (for consistency) by a smaller group of editors who are used to doing such things. I regard my job as to find the articles in the first place... Hence another two this evening :o)

== Risk of articles being deleted as not notable ==

Sean, as you know I have been gaily adding articles on German railways as part of the project. However I am just a tad concerned that I could log on one day and find most of them deleted as not notable enough. After all is a small branch line in Saxony notable? Is a small Bavarian halt notable? To a fan of German railways, the answer would be yes and Wikipedia may be the only place he could get this information (one such fan flatteringly said I had made one of the greatest contributions ever to the subject of German railways in English, so he clearly welcomed their presence here!). So do I carry on, or is it going to be a waste of time? [[User:Bermicourt|Bermicourt]] ([[User talk:Bermicourt|talk]]) 19:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
:There's a very strong presumption that railway stations and lines are automatically notable, with which (on occasions they come up at [[WP:AFD|AFD]]) I tend to flame anyone who suggests deletion back to the stone age. Even if we don't currently have the sources ''cited in the article'', it's always reasonable to assume that any railway station or line has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable sources (e.g., the article "New Station Opens" in the local newspapers). So far, I'm not aware of a single railway station or line article ever being deleted, although I will sometimes merge very stubby articles on ''disused'' very insignificant stations into a single article on the line or town (see [[Railway stations in Cromer]] or [[Hammersmith & Chiswick railway station]] for example).''&nbsp;–&nbsp;<font color="#E45E05">[[User:Iridescent|iride]]</font><font color="#C1118C">[[User talk:Iridescent|scent]]</font><small> 20:31, 25 November 2008 (UTC)</small>''

(Aside: that's the second time someone thought my name was Steve. It's Sean.)
Many editors believe that railway infrastructure is inherently notable because articles about them describe discrete locations that can be visited with manmade objects that can be touched, and those objects took considerable planning and resources to install. The more accepted reasoning is like Iridescent described above where it is likely that we would be able to find reliable sources for every station and line with a thorough search of local newspaper archives. The [[WP:N|notability guideline]] makes a distinction between popular (or important) and notable; a subject is notable if it has received coverage in independent reliable sources. So the best way to avoid notability questions is to add citations to the sources as you add information.

As to whether adding material on the more esoteric subjects of German railways is relevant, my own view is that it is vital to help avoid a systemic bias where English-speaking regions are covered more thoroughly than others.

:Sean, Many apologies - I've corrected my error! Thanks to you and Iridescent for your advice, clarification and encouragement. I will continue to add to the body of knowledge and to supply references where possible. One issue is that German Wikipedia seems to quote one or more sources covering the subject at the end of the article rather than using in-line citations or references. So to provide them is quite a lot of work. Nevertheless, I will do what I can. VMT. [[User:Bermicourt|Bermicourt]] ([[User talk:Bermicourt|talk]]) 20:12, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

See [[User talk:Jorge MG]] & [[Talk:RFFSA#Wrong decimal marker]] & [[RFFSA#Present day Brazilian railway companies]] This section originally had the wrong decimal marker, i.e. the comma. In [[Narrow gauge rail transport#Sweden]] the following micht be usefull for the sake of consitency: {{RailGauge|1093}}, {{RailGauge|802}}, {{RailGauge|1217}} and {{RailGauge|1188}}.

Sean, I just translated what I hope is the start of a useful list on key railway figures, only to have it flagged for deletion ('too subjective'). First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art]], a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the [[Los Angeles County Museum of Art]] (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

If you are interested in attending, please add your name to [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art]]. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate. Lodging is as of right now out of scope, but we could discuss that if enough people are interested.

Sean, could you take a look at the contributions of {{userlinks|Alco83}}? It seems to me that either they are attempting to promote the website www.american-rails.com , or that it has become their favorite reference, as they seem to add a reference with external link to this website on each and every article they edit.

Personally, I have found this website to be worse than worthless in my research, popping up on yahoo or google VERY frequently, but seldom providing anything in the way of useful roster or build information ''(but containing the word "roster" on many of its non-roster pages, and only showing "preserved" engines on many of its roster pages)''. It seems to exist to provide revenue to its owner by way of the "google ads" placed on each and every one of it's pages.

If you could take the time to check this out, it would be greatly appreciated. I'd say something to Alco83 myself, but fear that anything I say would suffer from an acute lack of tact. [[User:Wuhwuzdat|Wuhwuzdat]] ([[User talk:Wuhwuzdat|talk]]) 18:21, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello there, I've been looking for someone active and interested in trains (as I can see in your talk page and your affiliation with WikiProject Trains, you seem to be!) to ask them if they would take a look over the [[Eurostar]] article. I wondered if you could take a look on it, make a few reflections on what is good and what sucks from your perspective, so that we'd have up to date aims and objectives from which to hone further efforts upon. ==GA Sweeps invitation==
Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are a member of the GA WikiProject. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force/Sweeps|GA sweeps process]]'''. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force/Sweeps/Running total|running total]]''' has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force/Sweeps worklist|new worklist]]''' has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force/Sweeps|GA sweeps page]]. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force/Sweeps worklist|list]], and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or [[User:OhanaUnited|OhanaUnited]] and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! == [[Railroad nicknames]] ==

Hi. Last year you left a comment on the talk page about removal of unref'd nicknames. Did you finish this? (There isn't an obvious link.) The page would seem an opportunity for placing potentially libellous names to companies, so it would be good if we can apply a firm removal policy on this page (it works on the UK Jargon page!)

:One possibility is to start with a locator map like there is on the article for [[Mathura, Uttar Pradesh|Mathura]] itself. See [[2009 Cairo train collision]] or [[2009 Rudine train derailment]] for examples of this. Once that is added, you can then look to creating a map (perhaps using Adobe Illustrator or similar software to create the graphics) with a smaller scale to show the track section where the accident occurred; there are a few examples of crash diagrams in the various subcategories of [[:commons:Category:Rail transport accidents|Category:Rail transport accidents]] on Wikimedia Commons (the category for Australia has a few good examples). You may wish to put this on the trains portal, as a news item:

* {{flagicon|Finland}} January 4, 2010 &ndash; [[Helsinki]], [[Finland]] - An intercity train broke in two, and four carriages crashed into the main railway station's concrete buffer. Thanks to the timely actions of operators and a guard, the train had been diverted, and the platform was evacuated. However, one of the carriages plunged into the Holiday Inn hotel's offices causing severe structural damage. There were no casualties. Only the conductor of the train, which carried no passengers, was slightly hurt. Very very impressed - you have been around so long now and still slogging away - am currently trying to tidy up some years old messes from western tasmania - and noticed a whole lot of cats never tagged for the project - does anyone run bots to pick up stray cats (categories - not the felines) ? cheers and my heartfelt ''wow' for your endless work :) [[User:SatuSuro|Satu]][[User talk:SatuSuro|Suro]] 07:48, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I try to check every category talk page that I run across, usually in the timeline series, to ensure that it is tagged with the banner. I haven't heard of any problems with categories being either tagged or untagged, so I just continue with what I'm doing. I'm sure there are some bots where we could ask for assistance. Thats fine - I might just stab away every now and then - I seemed to find heaps today. What is your attitude on the collection of ''Disused'', ''Closed'' and ''Defunct'' in relation to railway stations and railway lines - I have been guilty of using one over the others in the Australian project - has there ever been any discussion about standardising the terminology at all? [[User:SatuSuro|Satu]][[User talk:SatuSuro|Suro]] 14:50, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Being the crazy 'Merkan that I am, I'd prefer to use "closed" for stations. As to lines, the Surface Transportation Board and the Interstate Commerce Commission before it use "abandoned" when a railroad company totally leaves a line to fallow (see [http://stb.dot.gov/stb/public/resources_abandonment.html]), whether the rails are lifted or not. [[User:Slambo|Slambo]] <small><font color="black">[[User talk:Slambo|(Speak)]]</font></small> 15:00, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Heheh - you still have a sense of humour after all this time - wow im impressed - well australian project has a mix of closed, defunct and i think disused in various states - and over-all the whole trains project seems to have all used ''all'' the terms in different parts - though the main (original?) article about the issue or parent cat seems to be defunct and i did a quick test on some category fiends and they thought defunct ''sounded the best'' but i then threw in the problem we have in good ole oz down our way we have lines that lose their trains and they are ''disused but not closed'' and then the regional administrations (state government) can sit on abandoned lines for decades and then decide to close by act of parliament after which they are closed by law (sigh) - i think i will leave it be - but if ever at the trains project you see mention of this give a call - and I'll bamboozle the discussion with irrelevencies to blunder the brain senseless by the craziness of it all - maybe trying to change all the closed and disused into defunct feels like too much of a brain strain for the moment :( [[User:SatuSuro|Satu]][[User talk:SatuSuro|Suro]] 15:09, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

== Question/Comment ==

I have been dabbling in editing for some time, mostly anonymously as I have been in China (can't remember what the restriction is)... but I am now looking at getting a bit more stuck in. I happened on your User page to see what people are writing before adding one myself. I might be a little less adventurous to start with!

I just made a small edit on a normal page but now find that you are 'guilty' of the same offence. So please tell me if I am wrong! You use 2 acronyms without expanding them, NMRA and WORT. In the case of NMRA you use the full name later. In the business world where I did (recently retired) a lot of business/technical writing the standard was to use the full name in the first instance, with the acronym or common name etc in parenthesis. Thereafter, the acronym etc can be freely used. Is the standard considered to be irrelevant when it is linked to a full explanation as of course yours are? Pls comment as I will use it as guidance in future editing.

I didn't find your semi-political inclusion, unless you include your involvement in Associations as all seek to influence decision makers and to the students of politics are 'political'.

:Well, first of all if nobody has said it before, welcome to editing!

:On the acronyms, I try to be aware of [[WP:ABBR|the appropriate guideline]] when I edit. There is some leeway in where the acronym expansion is placed and in how the first use is made within an article, and since userpages aren't really articles, most of the Wikipedia manual of style does not apply to them. In the case of my userpage, I wanted the page to look more like an article than a mindless collection of random thoughts, so the first use of NMRA is a link to the Wikipedia article about the organization. This organization is referred to more often by the public and the press through the acronym name than it is through the expanded name, so it could be argued that the expansion is optional here. I also linked the expansion of the acronym later on the page mainly because it was so far away from the first use, but I could have gotten away without linking it there. In all fairness, the expansion should be next to the acronym's first use in an article. The other abbreviation that you mention, WORT, is not really an acronym in the strictest sense of the word; it's a radio station's callsign. I'm in Wisconsin, which is to the east of the Mississippi River. In the US, radio and TV stations that are physically located to the west of the Mississippi River have callsigns that begin with K while stations located to the east all have callsigns that start with W. In Canada they all start with C. Some station callsigns are based on acronyms, such as WUWM in Milwaukee where the last three letters stand for University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, but others are not strictly acronymic, such as KROQ in Los Angeles, where the ROQ is a stylized spelling of Rock, which indicates the kind of music that makes up the station's regular format. Even though callsigns are based on word sounds and acronyms, they are generally accepted to be words themselves and the expansion is not needed except to fill in the article's infobox line about what the callsign stands for.

:The userbox that I'm referring to that indicates a little bit of politics is the one about being an Eagle Scout. The moral values of conservative politics in America are sometimes associated with scouting. For example, there have been controversies in the past about having openly homosexual men as scout leaders. I remember hearing of one case where a scout troop had to be disbanded because the only adult who stepped forward to volunteer to fill the leadership role was gay. I do not necessarily agree with all of the moral statements that can be associated with scouting; in this example, my own belief is that it is none of my business what other people do in their bedrooms or who they choose to be intimate with. I really have no interest in participating in such moral or political debates, so I keep to the fact that I attained Eagle rank, and welcome the camaraderie of other scouts.

== Brill Tramway ==

If you get the chance, can you have a skim over [[Brill Tramway]] for any obvious errors, or things which aren't obvious to the non-UK reader? I've spent so much time on this one (and its various subpages) that there may be glaringly obvious problems that are passing me by. While it's quite long, I can't see any obvious place for cutting; the constant changes of ownership and rebuilding schemes, and the fact that it went from being a private industrial tramway, to a passenger railway, to (theoretically) part of an urban mass-transit system gives it a far more complex history than most minor railroads. The one significant removal I've made has been to remove the route diagram template; I think that in this case, the inkscape diagrams are more useful as they show the curves-and-branches more clearly than an RDT would.

Even though it makes the article longer, I've kept the ''de facto'' appendix of "Infrastructure". I think it makes more sense using this arrangement; that way, the technical details don't swamp the article text itself. I'm reluctant to move it off to a subpage; any subpage would need an explanatory summary-history of the line to provide at least minimal context, and thus actually add to the overall length. (Anyone interested in one is likely to be interested in the other, so will end up reading the same material twice.) The section only adds 800 words to an article that's 10200 words without it, so it's not having a significant impact on length.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<font color="#E45E05">[[User:Iridescent|iride]]</font><font color="#C1118C">[[User talk:Iridescent|scent]]</font> 09:51, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

== Trains portal DYK ==

Hi, Slambo; re {{diff|Template:Trains portal/Did you know|382477543|382281778|this DYK}} - how are the entries nominated and vetted? Far from being "revolutionary" in the mid-1930s, remote-control of steam locomotives had been commonplace in Britain for some thirty years: the [[Great Western Railway]], for example, began using a remote-control system (the "auto-train") circa 1905. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#d30000; background:#ffeeee">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 16:53, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

:Nominations for DYK inclusion are added to the [[Portal:Trains/Did you know candidates|candidates]] page, which also states the rules for inclusion on the portal. Once a day, usually the first thing I do in the morning when I log in, I look at the nominations that have been left there. I review the entries to ensure that the stated fact is included in the article, that the image is available under a free license, that the fact and article has not already been featured in the DYK section, that the country the feature refers to has not been included in the DYK section in the last few days, and that the text is readable and grammatically correct. I tend to trust the nominator and the article for the accuracy of the facts mentioned mainly because following up on article references and further researching each item would be time prohibitive. If there are no entries on the candidates page, I look at the [[:Category:Unassessed rail transport articles|unassessed articles]] to find the day's new entry. :::My first impulse is to say that it should be fixed. Any changes made to the current entries should also be copied to the corresponding entry in the [[Portal:Trains/Did you know|archive]], and the correction should be carried through to the linked article as well. I'll make the change to the most recent entry based on the correction you've noted. Hello Slambo. I see from your user page that you have a particular interest in American railroads and thought you might find my family's massive (10,000+ webpages) [http://cprr.org railroad history site] and my two books (with two more to be published in the next year) on the subject of interest. :Well, in case it hasn't been said yet, welcome! I took a quick look at your draft article and it's a great start to an article on the subject. There are a number of style changes that could be made to improve it and bring it more in line with Wikipedia's current [[WP:MOS|manual of style]], but the more important effort is accurate content that is [[WP:CITE|well-referenced]] to [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] which you've already begun. For examples of other railroad-related articles that have been peer reviewed and designated as high quality articles, take a look at the articles in the [[:Category:FA-Class rail transport articles|featured rail transport articles]] and [[:Category:GA-Class rail transport articles|good rail transport articles]] categories. Right now the majority of our FA/GA content deals with historical topics, but I for one would welcome high quality articles on modern rail technologies.
:I always hesitate to edit article drafts that are in user space, but as you've already approached me on the subject, it seems to me that you might not mind if I jump in and make a few changes later (it's my son's birthday today, so I won't be able to devote much time to it right now).
:As a side note, I don't know if you've seen my personal railroad website yet: [http://riptrack.net The Rip Track]. There are a couple of projects I'm working on there that are beyond the scope of Wikipedia articles (like the [http://riptrack.net/wisconsin Wisconsin railroad timeline], [http://riptrack.net/podcast podcast] and [http://riptrack.net/whoswho who's who list]) and I'm always looking for more and better reference materials.

A link to the previous discussions has now been added, and the last comments then were added by you, musing on the possibility of TWP template changes that would allow templates for subprojects to be visually different. That was 3 years ago! Just thought you might like to make a comment on the current proposals. -- [[User:EdJogg|EdJogg]] ([[User talk:EdJogg|talk]]) 23:04, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

== Regarding H.K. Porter ==

Hi, I've just a few questions because I noticed you previously editted a page about the H.K. Porter Co. If you don't have any info, then that cool. I am frustrated trying to locate a contact for H.K. Porter. I first hoped to find something here on Wikipedia but nothing relevant to my search so I went to Google and found a web page giving contact info for a company named "H.K. Porter Co. Inc.". Score, I thought... I called the number and the reception guy said his company isn't the H.K.Porter I'm looking for. Hmm... Could there be more than one H. K. Porter co. in Pittsburg, PA?

For the record, I own a bolt cutter emblazoned with the name H.K. Porter and I'm trying to locate a spare part for the tool. The problem is it's slightly old, so none of the tool companys (Grainger included) can find a spare cutter for my tool. That's why I went chasing the manufacture or something similar. I hoped that I could at least get a contact number to whoever they licensed the name H. K. Porter too, in my search for a spare part. No Dice. I know, I'm not looking for locomotive stuff, but the company name is the same.

Comments?

Thank you for your time.

[[User:Smash591|Smash591]] ([[User talk:Smash591|talk]]) 16:26, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

This may seem odd, but I'm including the answer to my question. The brand of tool, H. K. Porter, was recently manufactured by a company named "Cooper Tools" who recently merged with "Apex Tool Group". So anyone seeking a direct phone call to the manufacture should call 866-907-9706. Now here is my current question, is it appropriate to add a blurb about the H. K. Poter tool manufacture to the H. K. Porter "train" page or should a separate page be created to document the current and past (so far as it is available) history of the H. K. Porter tool brand?

Again, comments? [[User:Smash591|Smash591]] ([[User talk:Smash591|talk]]) 16:59, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

:Subsidiary companies do deserve at least a mention in the article about the parent company. If the information about the subsidiary is long enough, and the company is notable by the [[WP:Notability]] guidelines, then it should be a separate article with links from the parent company article (but also remember that [[WP:NOTDIRECTORY|Wikipedia is not a directory]], so direct contact information, such as the phone number you noted above, should not be included in the article text). Use your best judgment as to whether there is enough [[WP:RS|reliable source]] material for a separate article and add the data where you think it is most appropriate. == Inekon Trams assessment ==

I am puzzled by your assessment of [[Inekon Trams]] as "Start" class for [[WP:TWP|TWP]]. It seems more like between C and B to me (closer to C). This is a very small manufacturer, which has built very few streetcars. If anything, the article is ''too long'', especially the infoboxes on the models and other details on the models, relative to how very few (single digits) have been built of each. If you really feel "Start" is a fair assessment, what is it you feel is missing to get to C-class at least? [[User:SJ Morg|SJ Morg]] ([[User talk:SJ Morg|talk]]) 11:47, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

:My first impression is that the history section is one large block of text and the infoboxes in the models section make a visual separation that gives the illusion that there is little more than the history section. I have no strong feelings on keeping it as start versus promoting to C class, and I am by no means the final arbiter of an article's assessment.
:The majority of the assessments that I add are done in a very quick scan and usually are based on my first impression of the article while I look for items to add to [[Portal:Trains/Did you know]] every day (a daily task which I have performed since May 2005). I use [[:Category:Unassessed rail transport articles]] as the pool of articles from which to choose a new fact for the day's update. Some days I can find an interesting tidbit within the first few articles that I look at, while other days I have to look at fifty or more articles to find something. Hi, re {{diff|Template:Trains portal/Did you know|prev|450065724|this DYK}} - the Webb Coal Tanks weren't perpetuated after 1923, construction having ceased in 1897; and it's also incorrect to imply that the GWR 5600 class was "perpetuated" after 1923, the type being introduced in 1924. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#d30000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 16:30, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

== [[User:SchuminWeb]]'s campaign against RR non-free images ==

SchuminWeb has gone on a tear against old railroad heralds and drumheads, and my attempt to get some explanation from him was rudely rebuffed. I normally don't do fair use images, so I really don't know what do to about these except concede that they will all be deleted (except for a few which he deems to be non-copyrightable— it's a sure thing those are mostly still trademarked so they are nonetheless non-free).

[[File:Copyright-problem.svg|64px|left|alt=|link=]]
Thank you for uploading '''[[:File:Pioneer Zephyr Dawn to Dusk Club.jpg]]'''. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by [[Wikipedia:Non-free content]]. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from [[Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline]] is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free|image copyright tag]]; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our [[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Files|criteria for speedy deletion]]. == Railroad Museum of Long Island banner shell ==

Since you created the banner shell, could you merge the Museum tag and the Long Island tag into that banner shell for the [[Railroad Museum of Long Island]]? I tried to merge them myself, but it didn't work. ----[[User:DanTD|DanTD]] ([[User talk:DanTD|talk]]) 17:02, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
:{{tps}} The problem is not with either {{tlx|WikiProjectBannerShell}}, {{tlx|WikiProject Museums}} or {{tlx|WikiProject Long Island}} but with {{tlx|WikiProject Trains}} - if you remove the {{para|imageneeded|yes}} it works as expected. I encountered a similar problem with {{tlx|WikiProject Buses}} a few weeks ago, and {{diff|Template:WikiProject Buses|prev|466364022|fixed it}} by wrapping a parameter value in a {{tag|div}} element. Will have a look at WP Trains. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 17:17, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

::I think the root of the problem is in the Imagedetails parameter. It seems that somewhere in that part of the template, there is an extra <nowiki>}}</nowiki> getting inserted. Putting the other banners above the TWP banner, they all nest into the banner shell. There are a number of other talk pages where imageneeded is used but Imagedetails isn't and it doesn't close the banner shell. I haven't had a chance to look further into the TWP banner code yet. ::::Further: I'm pretty sure that the root cause is the line immediately above my {{tag|div|c}} which begins with a colon - this kicks off a {{tag|dl}} element, which for some reason terminates the enclosing table too early. Might be worth checking whether {{tag|td|content={{tag|dl}}}} is valid HTML; my fix amends this to {{tag|td|content={{tag|div|content={{tag|dl}}}}}}. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 17:37, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

== Need advice re: refs ==

Am in the process of tracking down more images for [[Railroad chapel car]] and while doing that, I came upon a conflicting ref from an old Baptist publication. All the other article refs re: Wheeler's death say the couple was not on the car when it happened, but this old Baptist publication is a sort of obit for him and it says that he fell under the chapel car and was killed. Would appreciate advice on how to treat this; my thought is that the older publication indicating he fell under the car is probably correct. The other refs are from more current histories of the cars. Thanks! [[User:We hope|We hope]] ([[User talk:We hope|talk]]) 17:31, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

== MSU Interview ==

Dear Slambo,

My name is Jonathan Obar [[user:Jaobar]], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name [[User:Jaobar/Admins_to_Interview_List_1|HERE]] instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --[[User:Jaobar|Jaobar]] ([[User talk:Jaobar|talk]]) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

The article [[Amtrak stations in California]] has been [[Wikipedia:Proposed deletion|proposed for deletion]]&#32; because of the following concern:
:'''Long-time orphan and not integrated with other articles on the topic.'''

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be [[WP:DEL#REASON|deleted for any of several reasons]].

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your [[Help:edit summary|edit summary]] or on [[Talk:Amtrak stations in California|the article's talk page]].

::I know I brought it up already on the TWP talk page, but since the article is essentially just a list, I say it would be better suited to be renamed as [[List of Amtrak stations in California]]. In fact, I think I'm going to add an appropriate category to it. ----[[User:DanTD|DanTD]] ([[User talk:DanTD|talk]]) 15:44, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

:::Do we really need a list separate from [[List of Amtrak stations]]? I've been noodling around with the idea of state-specific Amtrak articles (see [[User:Mackensen/Amtrak service in Indiana]] for an unfinished example), but I'm still not sure if it's a good idea or not. [[User:Mackensen|Mackensen]] [[User_talk:Mackensen|(talk)]] 15:50, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

::::Well, considering how large of a system it is out in California, and the fact that the article is a list as I mentioned earlier, renaming it would be the better choice. If not, there's always moving it to [[Amtrak California]], and just making the list a new chapter. If your proposed article on Indiana were just a list, it would be too small. ----[[User:DanTD|DanTD]] ([[User talk:DanTD|talk]]) 16:31, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

; Some Tips About References/Sources

Having references included in articles is one of the most important aspects to a good article, let alone Wikipedia! Without them, no one would ever know what is true and what is false and Wikipedia probably wouldn't be where it is today. So this month, I will talk about how to check for references, how reliable they are, and so on and so forth.

The first thing to do when reviewing an nominee is to do a quick scan of the article. One of the things to look for is if the article has references! If you don't see a list at the bottom of the article page, quick-fail it.<ref>Before quick-failing the article, verify that one of the several referencing templates is correctly placed at the bottom of the article. If the template is not placed, try to place it to see if references are displayed. If this proof returns no references, then proceed to quick-failing.</ref> For newcomers, quick-failing is failing an article when you spot a problem before actually conducting a full review. If you do find a list of references (and in most cases you will) make sure to look through each and every one. If you want to save some time, use [http://toolserver.org/~dispenser/view/Checklinks this tool] as it will tell you if there are any problematic references in the article you are reviewing.

Next, check the reliability and type of the references/sources. In terms of the type of reference, check to see how many primary and/or secondary sources are included. Primary sources are the ones published by the subject of the article. For example, if the subject of the article has to do with the [[iPhone 4s]] and the source is published by [[Apple]], it is considered a primary source. Secondary sources are those ''not'' published by the subject of the article (or in close relation to it). Newspapers are examples of secondary sources and considered one of the better types to include in the article (not saying primary sources are bad). If you find that most/all of the references are primary sources, notify the nominator about this issue(s) and place the article on hold once you have completed the review. Only in the event that a secondary source can't be found as a replacement, then the primary source can remain. If there is a good mix of primary and secondary sources, that is perfect and no references need to be changed.

Now, reliability. Forums are generally not considered reliable and some blog's may not be reliable either. Newspapers, most sources published by the subject, some blogs, etc. are considered reliable. If you don't know wether the source is reliable, ask for a second opinion. For more info about how to identify wether a reference is reliable or not, visit [[Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources|this article]].

Finally, one of the more basic things to look for is that every statement in the article has at least one reference! The only case that a statement doesn't need a reference is when it is common sense that the statement is defiantly true and/or in the case where the statement can't be challenged, as per what Wikipedia says, "All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable published source using an inline citation."

Hi, I disagree with {{diff|Clayton Tunnel rail crash|prev|522982417|this edit}}, since in this context the quotes around "danger" and "clear" are being used to indicate technical terms, and are not being used to indicate what somebody said or wrote. It's also a sentence fragment, not a complete sentence, so the full stop belongs outside the quotes, per [[MOS:LQ]].

However, {{diff|Clayton Tunnel rail crash|prev|522982167|this edit}} was valid, since a complete sentence is being quoted (I've just checked my copy of ''Red for Danger''). --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 17:51, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, re {{diff|Template:Trains portal/Did you know|prev|523346351|this DYK}}: not just "were", but "still are". Although they've not been shown on the front of trains for 35 years, they're found in the impressions left by the clippers of the ticket examiners (I've got some right here: one is stamped 2P66 and dated 1 July 2012; another is stamped 1R23 and dated 8 August 2012). :Cool, thanks for the info. Being on the other side of the Atlantic, I am still reading about regular practices there. The text for the DYK item today was basically copy/pasted from the article text. I took the first two sentences of [[Train reporting number#Train reporting numbers|section 1.2]] and adjusted them into one sentence and found a different photograph that better showed the four-character code. ==Template help==
Hi, I was comparing {{tl|WikiProject Scouting}} with {{tl|WikiProject Trains}} to see why the latter had more functionality. Looking at [[:Template:WikiProject Trains/class]] I see that the trains wikiproject uses both book and redirect under "class." Can you help me update the Scouting template so we get a more detailed [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting/Assessment|assessment]]? I don't want to mess up the template! Thanks! --[[User:evrik|evrik]]&nbsp;([[User talk:evrik|talk]]) 20:20, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
:{{tps}} To begin with, you need to create [[Template:WikiProject Scouting/class]] - see [[Template:Class mask/doc]]. To retain the existing selection of classes but also allow Book and Redirect, it should be set up like this:
<pre>{{class mask<noinclude>/templatepage</noinclude>|{{{class|}}}
|topic=Scouting
|FQS=yes
|book=yes
|redirect=yes
}}</pre>
:Having saved it, you'll see a box stating "Some of the categories required do not currently exist, and need to be created", and listing two redlinked categories {{cl|Redirect-Class Scouting articles}} and {{cl|Book-Class Scouting articles}}. Use the blue "create" link to create those. They should both look like this prior to saving:
<pre>{{subst:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/qualheader
|project = Scouting
|topic =
}}</pre>
:Having created the two extra categories, change one line in {{tlx|WikiProject Scouting}}, from <source lang=text>|QUALITY_SCALE = extended</source> to <source lang=text>|QUALITY_SCALE = subpage</source> You can now start setting {{para|class|redirect}} - permitted aliases are {{para|class|redir}} and {{para|class|red}}.
:Regarding banners on Book talk pages - an automatic process should fixup these, provided the banners don't have a {{para|class}} parameter - or they do have one, but it's already either blank or set to {{para|class|book}}. If it's been set to {{para|class|NA}}, those will need to be fixed manually. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 22:51, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

::Thanks for jumping in on this question. Since the class mask template was implemented after the project banner versions that I worked on, I was not as familiar with its usage and would have had to research it first. == LEG ==

Hi Slambo,

How's it going? I recently posted an article for the [[Levity Entertainment Group]]. Now I've come to learn that the company [http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/levity-entertainment-group-tweaks-name-signs-with-wme/ recently changed its name] and is now called LEG. Back in 2007, you created the [[LEG]] Wikipedia page to redirect to [[Lea Green railway station]]. So, of course, I'm wondering if I can reassign that page to the LEG company. Perhaps with a hatnote for the train station? Thanks so much! [[User:Qwerty03211962|Qwerty03211962]] ([[User talk:Qwerty03211962|talk]]) 17:35, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
:{{tps}} We already have [[Leg (disambiguation)]]. It's not a good idea to have more than one dab page for different capitalisations of the same word. Personally I would amend [[Leg (disambiguation)]] as follows: first add a new entry thus:
:*LEG, the name adopted by the [[Levity Entertainment Group]] in February 2013
:amend the entry under [[Leg (disambiguation)#Places]] from
:* [[LEG]], Lea Green railway station in St. Helens, Merseyside, England
:to
:* LEG, the National Rail Enquiries code for [[Lea Green railway station]] in St. Helens, Merseyside, England
:Finally amend {{noredirect|LEG}} to point to [[Leg (disambiguation)]]. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 17:45, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

== Camping coaches ==

Hi, re {{diff|Camping coach|prev|550005921|this edit}} - Camping coaches don't really fit in with the broad category since they were not a service run from one place to another - in contrast to sleeping cars, the coaches concerned were normally static. People would travel to the site in a normal service train, and once they had arrived, the camping coach (which had been positioned there at the start of the season) then served as accomodation. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 14:46, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

== WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre ==

{|{{Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/Shell|introduction=Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

*'''Recruiters:''' The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/Recruiter Central#Becoming a Recruiter|this criteria]]. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre ''will not'' open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/Recruiter Central#The Process|the process]] and add your name to the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/List of Recruiters|list of recruiters]]. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/Recruiter Central#The Process|process section]] is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".

*'''Co-Director:''' The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact [[User:Dom497|me (Dom497)]].

*'' '''Nominators, please read this:''' '' If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/Recruiter Central#Nominators That Are OK With A Recruitee Reviewing|this page]]. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to [[User talk:Dom497|contact me]]. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

''A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.''--[[User:Dom497|<span style="color:#1F75FE">'''Dom497'''</span>]] ([[User talk:Dom497|<span style="color:#00308F">'''talk'''</span>)]]

Slambo: Another editor and I disagree on the facts, likely our sources disagree. Is writing out my set of facts on the talk page the best way to disarm this feud?

Ed in Kentucky--SSW9389 15:39, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

:The article's talk page is the best place to discuss the details, especially when there are conflicting sources. I took a quick scan through the edit history from the last few days. I'm glad to see things still appear civil. The other step that I would make would be to send the other editor a personal note inviting him/her to join the discussion on the talk page. The discussions that I've seen of this manner usually resolve to including all of the conflicting information in the article with comments like "according to X[1] and Y,[2] this happened, but Z[3] notes the event happened this other way" with the complete citations listed in the footnotes.

== Mississippi Riverboats -- apparent lack of any articles ==

Slambo -- It has been years since I was known as Simesa here -- Now I've spotted a major problem. I can't find anything in Wikipedia on "Mississippi riverboats" or any similarly-named topic. I've explored a fair amount, and I can find a tiny article on "Riverboat casinos" and a couple on now-defunct modern steamboat replicas, but none on the core topic. Good Article Nominations Request For Comment

A 'Request For Comment' for Good Article Nominations is currently being held. We are asking that you please take five to ten minutes to review all seven proposals that will affect Good Article Nominations if approved. Full details of each proposal can be found here. Please comment on each proposal (or as many as you can) here.

At this time, Proposal 1, 3, and 5 have received full (or close to) support.

If you have questions of anything general (not related to one specif proposal), please leave a message under the General discussion thread.

Please note that Proposal 2 has been withdrawn and no further comments are needed. Also, please disregard Proposal 9 as it was never an actual proposal.

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to 1889 in rail transport may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • superintendent at [[London, Brighton and South Coast Railway]]'s Brighton Works 1870-1889, dies {b. 1833).

Yeah, that would be the excursion. I remember overhearing the dispatcher on other railfans' scanners advising trains over the pass to "whistle freely" because there were so many people along the track to see it. Slambo (Speak) 11:49, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

Disambiguation link notification for December 1

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Darius Miller (railroad president), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Great Northern Railroad (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hale Holden for DYK?

Hello, Slambo. Thank you for starting this article. I've nominated it for DYK on MainPage. You may want to monitor the nomination, just in case reviewers have any questions or requests. Please be encouraged to self-nominate your next contribution for DYK. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 01:09, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I had thought about submitting it but got distracted with trying to find more information about him and his family (and building a genealogical profile of his family; did you know that through his marriage, he was Julia Child's uncle?) and then fixing a couple problems on my own website.
