We are thrilled to announce the publication of our latest scientific paper, "The Next Food Revolution Is Here: Recombinant Microbial Production of Milk and Egg Proteins by Precision Fermentation" in Annual Reviews of Food Science and Technology. This work is authored by our brilliant colleagues José Arnau, R&D Director, and Morten Bjørn Nielsen, Industrial PhD student. In a world where food production must be drastically increased to meet the demands of a growing population and simultaneously made sustainable to respect and preserve our planet, precision fermentation offers a revolutionary solution. Using microbes to produce animal-identical proteins, precision fermentation is set to transform our food systems. This technology is incredibly efficient regarding land, water, and feedstock use, and is expected to make food production sustainable and to result in more local production of designed food products, such as dairy or egg proteins. But for this food revolution to happen, the technology needs to scale, with production titers reaching 50 g/L and above. This requirement makes strain engineering, process optimization and scale-up critical success factors. And that's why we at 21st.BIO make it our mission to develop the best production strains and fermentation processes, continuously optimizing every single step, and supporting our customers to upscale towards industrial production. We do it so you don't have to. Our top-performing strains are already working with dairy and egg proteins. Explore our development programs, and contact us for more information. We strongly recommend this read to better understand precision fermentation and its potential. Whether you're a seasoned expert or just curious, this paper has valuable insights for everyone. Congratulations to José and Morten for this great review ✨ #Food #Biotechnology #Sustainability

#Biosolutions are moving center stage 🌍   Folkemødet was a true demonstration of the increasing level of understanding around the potential of biology to solve some of the most pressing issues around food security and climate transition.   21st.BIO was there to showcase how we use an industrial biological platform to develop production technologies for food and materials – and to share ideas and perspectives on how we accelerate the impact of precision fermentation globally.   The debates showed that: ☘ Both the current and the next generations of politicians understand that we need biosolutions to deliver food security and climate targets. 🤝 Decision makers are ready to move when it comes to supporting biosolutions as the driver for the green transition and growth for Denmark and beyond. 🏭 We need to establish a production footprint (aka a large production facility) in Denmark to truly exploit the potential of our world leading technology and know-how, as well as our strong ecosystem. 🛒 We still have some way to go to truly convince the consumers of using proteins produced with biotechnology – of course – the products are not approved for consumption in Europe.   We are ready for the 2025 edition and will happily contribute to discussions with all the stakeholders who can and will be part of making the biorevolution happen.   Thank you so much to all those who helped put focus on the prospects of biosolutions, and special thanks to Anders Spohr, Sofie Carsten Nielsen, Linea Søgaard-Lidell, Morten Bødskov, Samira Nawa, Charlotte Bagge Hansen, Karin Breck, Jakob Lave, Merete Juhl, Nadia Gullestrup Christensen, and Michael Minter. #biotechnology #food #climate

Did you know that the demand for food will double by 2050? Our CEO Thomas G. Schmidt and Barbara Taudorf Andersen will be in Folkemødet this week to discuss how to produce enough protein to feed the growing world population in the coming decades. Without giving too much away, we can share a few thoughts with you about what will be needed: 🥛 Selecting the proteins that the world needs most – for example, high-quality milk proteins. 🏭 Developing the best technologies to produce proteins via fermentation on an industrial scale – luckily, that's already being done in Denmark – guess who's on it! 👨🌾 Feedstock for fermentation, produced by Danish farmers. The microbes eat various forms of carbon in the fermentation tanks to make protein. And it would be great that: 🌍 Denmark supports the establishment of the first factories in Denmark, so Danish businesses can take part in a huge business adventure. Alternatively, the first factories will be established in the US, the Middle East and Asia, using Danish technology. 🚀 The EU and the Danish state ensure that proteins produced with fermentation technology are approved for food in Europe – quickly. Representative of the Danish democratic ambitions, #Folkemødet ('the People's Meeting') is a unique festival where citizens, decision-makers, NGOs and businesses gather to discuss, debate, share ideas and promote cooperation. Meet us in the DI corner (Thursday) and Bioscenen (Friday) – or reach out to Thomas and Barbara for a chat. #biosolutions #food #biotechnology

This #WorldMilkDay and #DairyMonth in June are good occasions to reflect on the upsides and downsides of dairy milk. Should we still praise milk?   For its nutritional and functional value, certainly. Cow's milk is nutritionally invaluable, containing essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and high-quality proteins like beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) and caseins. These proteins contain all amino acids essential to human health, are easily digested, and have many useful properties for food texture and formulation.   However, cow's milk production will not be able to meet the demand for high-quality nutrition, as the demand for food will double towards 2050. The production of cow's milk has significant environmental impacts, contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, extensive land use, and high water consumption.   The world therefore needs complementary technologies to produce high-quality nutrition like dairy proteins, so that each region of the world will have the ability to feed their population with nutritious foods – and more sustainably than today.   Bridging the best of both worlds, we at 21st.BIO leverage precision fermentation to help our customers produce dairy proteins without the animals – and therefore with drastically reduced GHG emissions, land, and water use.   In a world where consumers aim to increase their protein consumption and view dairy proteins as a healthy option, we are proud to work on providing the world with sustainable alternatives, offering the same health benefits and food properties people know and love.   Using our world-leading production strains and R&D team, and our advisory on getting from lab to industrial scale production, our customers are already scaling up their production of dairy proteins with our technology.   What about you? Contact our team to learn more.

Last Friday, we were lucky to welcome over a hundred of you to the grand opening of our pilot plant facility.    We started with an exclusive roundtable, gathering twenty executives and visionaries from the most prominent financial, industrial, and political institutions in Denmark and Europe. Together, we discussed the technological leadership of Europe in biosolutions, how to maintain it and the importance of establishing large scale biomanufacturing facilities in the coming years, so that the innovation born in European countries can grow, scale and reach market here.    We inaugurated our pilot plant facility: Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President of the European Commission cut the ribbon alongside our two co-founders, Thomas G. Schmidt, CEO and Per Falholt, CSO.    The party started as the larger crowd arrived and we heard speeches from our CEO, Thomas Schmidt, Margrethe Vestager, as well as Peder Lundquist, CEO at EIFO.    It was amazing to showcase our partnership with AMSilk GmbH | Biotech Materials, with both Gudrun Vogtentanz and @Isabel Rosenberger onsite to educate our guests about the incredible wonders of spider silk, and display some of their products.    Our 21st.BIO colleagues took turns taking all guests on a guided tour presenting our technology, strain engineering capabilities, and of course the shiny new pilot facility.    It was an incredible day for all of us. Thank you all for coming and making Friday a great success.     https://lnkd.in/dYkehA_G
