Laser joining and cutting at Fraunhofer ILT

Sharing experiences and gaining knowledge in precision melt engineering. True to this motto, the #SFB1120 Summer School 2024 is currently taking place at Steinfeld Monastery. Renowned representatives from national and international industry and applied research are invited to give exciting presentations in the field of melting processes. Over the two days, Christoph Spurk and Marcelo de Oliveira Lopes from our institute will be giving exciting presentations on laser beam welding with targeted energy input and synchrotron analysis (sub-project A01) and laser beam cutting with control of the melting processes at the cutting front (sub-project A08). The sub-projects are led by Prof. Dr. Arnold Gillner. Our student Jan-Patrick Wille is also taking part this time in order to promote our young talents and get them excited about the topics. Jan has made a considerable contribution to the success of sub-project A01 with his work as a student assistant at the Lehrstuhl für Lasertechnik LLT - RWTH Aachen University. The #RESILIENT project is an initiative to combine laser-based manufacturing processes and the integration of the multi-tool process (LBW + LMD) in intelligent lightweight construction strategies. The central challenge for the Fraunhofer ILT is the process development for the combination of laser beam welding #LBW with laser metal deposition #LMD of aluminum-based alloys. The consortium of the interdisciplinary project addresses current research issues and develops solution-oriented methods for establishing the multi-tool process in industry.   Research associates from both disciplines are researching manufacturing strategies and methods for the realization of topology-optimized components with complex structures. Hydrogen-loaded additively manufactured components are particularly critical in laser beam welding and pose a particular challenge for the research associates. Avoiding and reducing the resulting gas porosity in the fusion zone therefore requires research into new approaches.   In particular we would like to express our thanks to the project partners d.u.h.Group, SWMS, Karl H. Driving innovation: Deep Insights into Copper Welding Processes at DESY 🔵   Discover how utilizing a blue diode laser can result in deeper welds compared to infrared (IR) lasers at equivalent power levels. In our latest video, witness the remarkable 1.75KW power output and delve into the science behind achieving deeper welds with blue wavelength, attributed to its superior absorption properties over IR. 📈 Over the past two years, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg has conducted extensive welding tests to illustrate the behavior of the melt pool conditions. Through high-frequency X-rays, the cross-section of the melt pool has been made visible, providing invaluable insights into the welding process and the melt pool dynamics. 🔬 The results highlight the outstanding performance of our blue diode laser, exhibiting stable melt pools without turbulences or pore formation while maintaining a consistent weld depth. Today, we opened the doors to our laboratories as part of AZL Open Day 2024 and gave interested visitors an insight into our research work. Our colleagues Christoph Wortmann, Christoph Spurk and Frank Schneider gave an overview of the transfer of laser technology to lightweight construction topics. The final preparations for the AKL – International Laser Technology Congress are underway, but day-to-day business must continue! To make it easier for us to analyze large amounts of data, such as the phase-contrast images from the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, we rely on the use of artificial intelligence. To do this, our colleagues train AI-pretrained neural networks to improve pattern recognition, perform classification and segmentation and then automatically determine process characteristics such as vapor capillary depth or pore distribution.
