🥳 Interim Presentations at d-school Foundations Program – what can you take away from a Design Thinking course for your studies and what project partners will gain from it? 🎯
🎬 Last Friday at the HPI d–school, the stage was 🎤 “stage clear” for the interim presentations in front of the project partners: Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Michels Kliniken, Data4Life, Cula Technologies and "Brandenburg zeigt Haltung". Like every semester, this is always a very special highlight on the 16-week path to the final presentation of the solutions – for the students and the project partners.
💬 Program lead, Lukasz Lata, summarizes his personal eye-openers: „I particularly appreciated the creativity and unfiltered presentation of the research results and potential solutions. It was fascinating to see the project partners' reactions as they experienced their challenges through the fresh, unbiased perspectives of the students. The students brought entirely new interpretations to the project challenges.“
📋 Analogue solutions can be found as well as 🖥️ digital approaches: „We are very happy to have four project partners this year. Eight teams are addressing their challenges, each building its own prototype. The students are very empathetic and good listeners, which empowers them to decide on their own what type of prototype to build that would best fit the stakeholders or the challenge. This year, we have four physical prototypes and four digital prototypes.”
✏️ How can you, as a student, benefit from this practice-oriented learning approach? „Beyond the obvious opportunity to learn a new methodology and work on a real-life challenge with a business or institution, the biggest impact of design thinking is on the students themselves. Students learn to develop new habits such as team spirit and collaboration, listening and empathy, adopting a "yes, and..." mindset, and celebrating failures,” observes Lukasz, who, together with Dr. Claudia Nicolai, developed the program “Design Thinking Foundations.”
🔎 The project partners can also gain a lot from bringing in a practical question – a so-called design challenge. Lukasz’s thoughts: „They learn about design thinking, what it means to be innovative, and how this can trigger internal transformation. Partners benefit from research and solutions developed by students, who are more objective than internal stakeholders. They also have the opportunity to connect with d-school’s network of organizations and institutions, which can lead to collaborations, knowledge sharing, and access to new talent.“
