🏡📐🎒School on a small scale: In just 8 months, a former shed in Gersdorf was converted into a school building to extend the premises of the non-profit organisation SCHKOLA gGmbH. For this purpose, the basic structure was fitted with thermal insulation made of wood and straw and the exterior facade was clad with larch wood. The visible bricks in the interior of the building are reminiscent of the original shed and give the space a very special charm. "School in the Shed" is a joint project between the architecture office KÜHNERBAUEN, Lorenz GmbH and SCHKOLA gGmbH. From: Andreas Hofer <andreas.hofer@iba27.de> Sent: Thursday, November 2, 2023 12:38:08 PM To: Leon Weingartner <lwein2011@gmail.com> Subject: Letter of Recommendation Dear Mr. Weingartner, Letter of Recommendation for the Elastic Woodscraper by Weingartner Architects To whom It May concern Shortly after the call for projects from the International Building Exhibition 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart (IBA'27) at the end of 2018, Weingartner Architects submitted the Elastic Woodscraper as a concept proposal to IBA'27. Normally, IBA’27 projects arise from competitions. Since IBA'27 has various large area developments in its portfolio and also sees itself as a broker of innovative ideas from research and development, we included the proposal in the IBA'27 network and tested its feasibility at various locations. Due to the climate problem, wooden structures are very topical and the potential of wooden structures for high-rise buildings is being explored at various locations. It was fitting that 6 ministries in Baden-Württemberg launched the timber construction offensive at the end of 2018. This is intended to advance Baden-Württemberg in the area of innovative timber construction. Despite these good general conditions, it has not been possible to launch the Elastic Woodscraper in a project at IBA’27 in recent years. In the Stuttgart region, which is still largely rural, there is fundamental skepticism about high-rise buildings. This was further fueled by some unfortunately failed high-rise projects in Waiblingen and Fellbach. Politicians are therefore afraid to take high-rise buildings into account in their plans. Furthermore, regulatory restrictions in German building law, contrary to the goals formulated with the timber construction offensive, continue to make it more difficult to use wood as load-bearing elements in building construction. Nevertheless, we would like to confirm that we find many of the concepts developed with the Elastic Woodscraper interesting and worth pursuing and wish the project success elsewhere. In particular, the following aspects of the Elastic Woodscraper seem innovative and capable of development: Fully modular approach with high prefabrication Creation of sub-units with 5 floors and approximately 1000 m2 of usable space for 15 apartments. Double facade as sun and weather protection with electrochromic glass. Exoskeleton for geometric freedom of the submodules. Equipped with movable furniture walls developed by architect Angelo Roventa, which allow flexible and efficient use of space. Deutschsprachige Kollegen und Freunde! 'Angel Yard' ist noch mal in der Deutschen Presse zu finden! It's particularly lovely to see the project in Detail magazine. For 'meanwhile' projects like this, there's sometimes a certain rough-and-readiness about the details as we try to keep costs (and embodied carbon) down while making the most of a temporarily available site. I think we found a really good balance on this project: an approach that carefully accommodates all the wonkiness of the existing garages and adds a roof structure with some elegance but without preciousness. It's important that the end result for a workspace project like this is an inspiring space, but also one that invites people to make it their own. We are very happy with the nomination for the Foundation Award 23 - Förderpreis für junge Baukultur. Thank you to all jury members and congratulation to all winners!

DLE Land Development GmbH Development is developing the “Scheufelen Quartier” in Lenningen near #Stuttgart on the 24-hectare site of a former paper factory. Around 35 kilometers southeast of Stuttgart, Berlin-based DLE Land Development is developing a neighborhood on a 240,000 square meter plot of land on behalf of the owners. On July 2, the Lenningen municipal council unanimously passed the resolution to develop the so-called "Scheufelen area." The goal of the upcoming development plan amendment process is to transform the former operational areas of the Scheufelen paper factory and to integrate the once closed factory site into the existing local structure. Individual listed #buildings are to be carefully preserved and integrated into a lively urban structure. The #urbandevelopment framework plan for the Scheufelen area provides for three different quarters with different uses. A #residential quarter will partly incorporate existing listed buildings and create a differentiated range of #housing for all age groups with additional new buildings. An "urban quarter" and areas for commercial use are also planned, which will be geared to emerging demand. "The plans to redesign and revitalize the traditional Scheufelen area will help Lenningen transform from a former paper industry site into a lively and attractive region with modern businesses and job opportunities," commented Petra Müller, Director of Conceptual Development & Communication at DLE. "By opening up the formerly isolated factory site, the city has the opportunity to follow the guiding principle of connecting the districts of Unter- and Oberlenningen." The urban development #framework plan developed by DLE and specialist planners provides for the reactivation of numerous areas and buildings. The renaturation of the Lauter river is also part of the redesign. Around 145,000 square meters of gross floor space are to be created through new #construction on the development area. A total of around 600 residential units and a daycare center are planned. Approval of the planning resolution was preceded by several workshops with the local council and preliminary discussions with the State Monument Office, the regional association and the district office. The municipality of Lenningen, located in the Esslingen district, is part of the Stuttgart metropolitan region and has around 8,300 inhabitants. Lenningen is connected to regional public #transport through a total of three train stations in the municipality.

In a recent feature by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on March 15, 2024, the spotlight is on the emerging trend of wood as a key construction material in urban developments, showcased through the "Timber Pioneer" project in Frankfurt's Europaviertel. This initiative highlights the material's numerous benefits, including its positive climate impact compared to conventional building materials like concrete. Wood's lighter weight offers significant advantages, particularly in urban densification projects, allowing for additional construction on existing buildings without compromising structural integrity. However, it's not without its limitations. The need for concrete in specific structural components, like underground parking, remains, and the construction industry faces challenges such as higher costs and regulatory hurdles. The article delves into the holistic approach of combining wood with traditional materials like steel and concrete, exemplified by the hybrid construction of the "Timber Pioneer". This project not only showcases the aesthetic and tactile appeal of wood but also emphasizes its sustainability credentials. Despite the growing enthusiasm for timber construction in cities across Germany and beyond, the industry confronts obstacles, including regulatory complexities and the need for a shift in industry standards towards more sustainable practices. The discussion extends to the broader implications for the construction sector, highlighting the potential for wood to play a significant role in the future of urban development. This coverage underscores the burgeoning recognition of wood as a sustainable, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing building material, pointing towards a greener future for urban architecture. Thank you for sharing KOALITION für HOLZBAU So, what do you think? Is the future of our cities wooden? Let's discuss how we can blend tradition with technology to create spaces that are not only sustainable but soul-nourishing. https://lnkd.in/eTsPmeAj @swiss-krono-group #UrbanDevelopment #SustainableConstruction #TimberPioneer #InnovationInConstruction #GreenBuilding #swisskrono

#GermanBuildingOfTheWeek NAK Architects have completed a multi-storey elementary school at the Nordhafen in Berlin Mitte. Tiemo Klumpp answers our questions about the project. What is special about this construction project? 'The new building for the elementary school is a six-storey solitaire in the historic building line along Chausseestraße. The gymnasium is stacked on top of the school, which on the one hand leads to an increase in the break and play area outdoors, on the other hand it is possible in terms of urban development to formulate an address along Chausseestraße and, in the spirit of Ludwig Hoffmann, schools as important buildings in the city highlight context.' What is the inspiration behind this project? 'We are always inspired by schools from the Wilhelminian era, which certainly made a positive spatial impression on the students from the surrounding Berlin blocks at the time. Typologically, the stacking of our elementary school picks up on the arrangement of this type of school, in which the auditorium was arranged above the gymnasium.' [CONSTRUCTION] Multi-storey adaptable and circular timber carpark to open in Germany Germany's largest wooden parking garage will be directly adjacent to the train station of #Wendlingen and offer about 450 car parking spaces, 170 bicycle parking spaces, 40 bicycle boxes, 12 e-bike charging stations and a repair point. ➡ Repurpose ⬅ The roughly 18-metre-high multi-storey car park has been designed with a deliberate effort to develop a simple static system and to screw connections and no composites. By doing so, the planners and the municipal authorities are already preparing for a future with fewer cars, as parking decks can easily by repurposed as a residential or work space. ➡ Reuse ⬅ As the individual construction wooden elements are hardly individualized, they are easy to dismantle and they can be returned to the materials cycle for a second life. But this is only after many years of service and repurposing. ➡ Carbon store ⬅ Apart from the stairwells and the road surface, the entire carpark is made from timber. This not only saves a lot of carbon but also acts as a carbon store. ➡ Other advantages ⬅ A major advantage of timber construction compared to a conventional steel car park is the resistance to de-icing salt and the ability to ensure load-bearing capacity in the event of a fire. Therefore, no elaborate coating work is required for a wooden car park. ➡ Project details ⬅ Location: Wendlingen, DE Client: City of Wendlingen am Necker Architect: herrmann+bosch architekten Engineer: knippershelbig HLS planning: H+H Planung, Uhingen Planned completion: April 2024 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_-acM4d
