Salt Lake City, where one of our advisors is based, has been undergoing a lot of development over the past few years. Unfortunately, part of this has involved tearing down older brick buildings and replacing them with concrete and glass office buildings, hotels, and loft-style apartments. As an individual who loves traditional architecture because of the character that it brings to a cityscape, especially at street level, the sterility of modern development can be heartbreaking. So when I read about cities and developers who cherish historical buildings and work to preserve the original architecture while modernizing the interior, it brings a smile to my face. Not everything that is old is bad, and not everything new is good. It's best to have a blend of the two. What are your thoughts on modern vs. classic architecture? https://lnkd.in/gcVxffx8

ᐊ ᑖ ᕐ ᑐ ᑦ / A Long Journey Our design for the Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre (NIHC) Design Competition was shaped by its unique environment including snowdrifts, dark winters, light-filled summers, and strong winds. Even the remarkable geology and topography of the site played a role in shaping the building form and experience. The building is sited between two natural rocks crests that form a summer and winter courtyard, which the building opens up to. The roof is “scoured” in a manner similar to how snow is shaped by prevailing and gusting wind, helping guide and control snowdrifts. Glazed horizontal ribbons invite low sunlight into the interior into key spaces. The building form resists a singular gesture and asks: how can the experience of moving inside and outside reflect both the complexity of the environment and diversity of activities while maintaining a cohesive expression? International Design Competition, Finalist.

Luxury Palacete With Premium Finishings And Confort. Sea View 5 Beds | 6 Baths | 399 sqm | 179 sqm lot Living It’s interesting to note that the owners decided to modernise this fantastic building on Avenida do Brasil, between the two castles (São João da Foz and São Francisco Xavier) that used to line the city’s Atlantic front. The building has more than 400m2, is on the seafront in a 3-storey building and has 5 suites+ 1, a lift and 3 parking spaces. The refurbishment of the building has breathed new life into the area, where we are treated to new standards of comfort, architectural quality and construction. Harmonious Interior and exterior Flow. Clean design and Arquitecture. Built in 2023 Elegant refined finishings with cosy modern confort If your dream is to live in a grandiose location by the sea, in a highly rated seaside destination, Avenida do Brasil in Foz is one of the avenues that has been most modernised and redeveloped since the end of the 19th century. This has not only established the city of Porto as a leading international tourist destination, but has also made it stand out and grow as one of Europe’s cultural heritage cities with a seafront. It is a place that stands out for its marvellous flowerbeds, gardens, beaches and sea, a true ex-libris of the city’s Atlantic front. There you’ll find numerous stately, century-old buildings from the neo-Gothic era, including luxurious palaces set in estates with an unrivalled landscape heritage. Architecture The architectural design of the building is the responsibility of the architects Pedra Liquida and the construction is the responsibility of the builder Sá Machado, finalised by the company Alfa Atlantica. The architectural plans show the enormous functionality in the living space generated by the building, with light benefiting from the 2 fronts and solar orientation, privacy in the private areas of the rooms and comfort and excellence in the organisation of the common areas. In addition, the building has constructive solutions of the highest quality, both in terms of cladding materials and the nature of the construction and equipment that make it up. This architectural project portrays a luxurious and grandiose condominium complex with a golden theme. **Design Aesthetics**: The complex's design is opulent, with its gold cladding offering a sense of luxury. The symmetry and alignment of the structures create a visually pleasing and majestic skyline. Rating: 10/10 **Innovation**: The design is ambitious, showcasing a mix of traditional opulence and modern architectural elements. The suspended central feature and connecting sky bridges are particularly innovative. Rating: 9/10 **Environmental Integration**: The complex's reflection on water and integration of greenery suggest an attempt to harmonize with the environment, though the gold finish is quite dominant. Rating: 7/10 **Functionality**: The structure's practicality for residents is not immediately clear, but the scale and amenities suggest a focus on providing a high-end living experience. Rating: 8/10 **Overall Impact**: As an architectural statement, the complex is striking and would likely become an iconic part of its locale. Rating: 9/10 The design is impressive for its scale, luxury, and innovative features, while still considering environmental integration.

When we first approached this site in Brent, our research uncovered that all buildings on this piece of land has taken the form of a warehouse for over 100 years. This led us to question: Rather than oppose, how could we best utilise this historic form for living? The result? Nine dwellings and a new commercial unit incorporated into a low-slung building that complements the rich, mixed character of the area. Light is drawn into the residences via a number of courtyards, rooflights and clerestory windows. Inside, traditional room arrangements are flipped upside down, with raised terraces that extend straight out of the living rooms. The internal and external walls align which dissolves the barriers inside and outside, creating a seamless spatial experience. A green roof adds to the sensation of living within a landscape while at the same time privacy is retained for all the occupants. In addition to a full planning approval this scheme was recognised with a Housing Design Awards Shortlist: https://lnkd.in/eCmc2E_2

In Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, an adaptive reuse project, takes what was two small side by side residences, and transforms them into a larger apartment block. The hope of the designers was to create a duality of the two buildings, making them symmetrical and upgrading the interior spaces to make them more adaptable to future needs. Connected by a central staircase, the building uses minimal energy and large windows allow for natural sunlight to filter in throughout the day, while operable doors and windows allow for the flow of fresh air throughout the spaces. The project is an example of adaptive reuse that can be adaptive and low energy which is something that is desperately needed.
