This year is almost over and #NewYear #2024 is coming closer. Looking into my calendar, the year 2024 is already packed with phantastic events, projects and other activities! However, my highlight in 2024 is the World Congress of IMEKO - International Measurement Confederation end of August in Hamburg, Germany. Over 800 scientists, colleagues and (I might say) friends are expected to meet in person and discuss advances in measurement science and quality infrastructure. IMEKO TC6 #Digitalization is organizing a workshop on digital transformation in metrology at the world congress - in addition to the scientific programme. https://imeko2024.org #metrology, #digitalisation, #digitalcertificates, #dataspaces

Alas! The results of scientific research can be misused by autocratic governments and rogue actors, an issue known as #DualUse. I had the chance to moderate a panel discussion on this topic organized by the German Embassy in Switzerland. A few take-home messages: 1️⃣ #CriticalTech: In scientific research pertaining to critical technologies, one should know if we are in a position of partnership, competition or rivalry with other countries, such as China, emphasized Armin Reinartz from Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. 2️⃣ #NewPardigm: It is not sufficient anymore to deal with dual-use within disciplines as new capacities are arising across them, for example with the increasing role played by #AI in #biotech, remarked Cedric Invernizzi from Federal Office for Civil Protection FOCP . 3️⃣ #Cultural relativism: A difference must be made between the military use of scientific research by democratic or by autocratic governments, pointed out Dr. Almuth Wietholtz-Eisert from Leibniz Association. 4️⃣ #Awareness: One can encounter some naivety among researchers regarding the potential misuse of their scientific work, according to Laure Ognois from SNSF Swiss National Science Foundation. 🎥 Watch the discussion on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e8v7d2mx 🙏 Thanks to Claudia Stolte and Guido Genrich from the German Embassy for the invitation, and to the public for their lively questions and remarks. At our #BuTa2024, Prof. Francesca Biagini, Vice President at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Dr. Rolf-Dieter Jungk, Head of Office at Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst, Dr. Jens-Peter Gaul, Secretary General at Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, and KoWi Director Dr. Torsten Fischer welcomed the participants. 🇪🇺 Dr. Torsten Fischer announced that for our BuTa we have prepared a mix of strategic and operational hot topics from EU R&I funding: knowledge valorisation, AI, development of research careers, as well as various workshops across #HorizonEU. 🚀 Dr. Jens-Peter Gaul highlighted that with its advisory formats, KoWi has clearly placed EU research funding in the context of German research funding. KoWi is going to focus even more on knowledge valorisation in #HorizonEU funding. Our first panel was about knowledge valorisation, with Prof. Dr. Gerhard Kramer, Vice President at Technische Universität München, Dr. Michiel Scheffer, President of the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), Prof. Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Hochschule Trier, and Prof. Dr. Carsten P. Welsch, Head of Accelerator Science at the University of Liverpool. Are we already on the right path to a European Innovation Area? The panel discussed knowledge valorisation in an all-round view on innovation policy. Knowledge valorisation plays a central role in the research policy debate in Germany and the EU. There is already a wide range of funding & support for the valorisation of research results, especially in #HorizonEU. Developments in funding policy will affect our work as EU research managers even more in the near future, states Dr. Torsten Fischer.

We want to know your opinion! 🔔⬇ The TUM - Chair of Traffic Engineering and Control, along with 42 partners from 12 countries, participates in the recently-started metaCCAZE Project, financed by the European Commission. The project seeks to contribute to the urban mobility transition by accelerating the deployment of smart systems that combine electric, automated, and connected mobility and infrastructure. In Munich, a Living-Lab lead by the Mobility Department of the city of Munich will test three different technologies/innovations: multimodal logistics hubs, a dynamic curbside management system, and a small-size connected and (party-)automated vehicle for last-mile transport of passengers and goods. In the first stage of the project, we want to understand the needs and opinions of Munich citizens in order to adapt the future design of the technologies accordingly. Thus, we would really appreciate if you could take a couple of minutes to answer the following survey, which deals with the potential future applications of (partly-) automated vehicles for last-mile transport of passengers and goods. https://lnkd.in/dcBfc8ae Thanks in advance! 🙏 #metaCCAZE #EU #HorizonEU #Transport #Logistics #MissionCities #EUFunded #EUGreenDeal

Feel very honored, Hamburg's first mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher visited the Artificial Intelligence Center Hamburg (ARIC) and I was very happy to have an intense discussion on how we can make Hamburg an even bigger AI hotspot. I am very proud that the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, international entrepreneurs, researchers and important industries support us so strongly and are committed to #responsibleAI together with us. Besides all the hype that is being spread about AI right now, I strongly believe that AI will shape our future in a positive way. And this key technology is already extremely relevant to competition for our location: 🛫 Hamburg is one of the world's largest aviation locations 📦 an internationally important logistics location with one of the largest intermodal transport hubs, maritime - railway - lorry ⚕️an internationally renowned life science and health hub ⚛️ an emerging Quantum Computing and Deeptech Ecosystem - Hamburg Quantum Innovation Capital (hqic) 🔬 and with institutions such as Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, EMBL, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, DLR Quantencomputing-Initiative, Max Planck Society, etc. a beacon of fundamental research and development These location factors and the fact that Hamburg has a very strong family business tradition, thinking in decades, innovating and working on long term strategies, makes the location an urban technology playground, as well as a test and application metropolis. AI and other converging technology must be used wisely, responsibly, securely and confidently in such environments and critical infrastructures. However, this is not a disadvantage, but our most important USP in the future! AUFBRUCH.Hamburg 🚀 Hamburg Innovativ #trustworthyAI #deeptech #aiecosystem
