Recent results in theoretical physics show that aspects of quantum mechanics can extend to macroscopic scale. The central role is played by non-local entanglement which classifies these phases of matter and which can be used as a computational resource. There is a significant scientific interest in the understanding of these quantum states as well as their control in the laboratory. At the same time, quantum computers have become the most precisely controllable quantum systems available. Besides their well-known use as computational tools, they also form the ideal platform for establishing control over and experimenting on new quantum matter. To serve theoretical physicists in achieving this goal, we are opening a Research Scientist position based in Munich, Germany.
Your initiative in exploring new research and product directions is highly valued. You will work in a team with eight other research scientists and developers with a variety of backgrounds from condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, all with strong quantum computing knowledge. We highly value Deep Work, the ability to concentrate on one singular task for extended periods of time without interruption
The successful candidate will

The successful candidate will
- Publish research with Quantinuum and external researchers. You understand the most pressing open questions in the field and whether quantum hardware can be used to address them.
- Speak the languages of quantum field theory as well as that of lattice models and help translate abstract concepts to concrete circuit implementations.
- Initiate new projects proactively and attract external funding.
- Key concepts include: gauge theories, (symmetry-protected) topological phases of matter and their connection to error correction, quasi-particles, fractionalization, emergent, higher-form and generalized symmetries. You should also know about the application of these concepts outside condensed matter physics.
- A PhD in physics, mathematics or a related area.
- Published research in the areas mentioned above.
- Strong programming skills, especially in Python.
- The ability to clearly communicate the concepts mentioned above to an audience with a general physics background.
