Intern research and development vehicle safety (f/m/x)

THE FUTURE WILL NEVER SIMPLY WORK IN THEORY.

SHARE YOUR PASSION.

World-leading technologies don’t make it into a BMW until they’ve undergone one of the most challenging journeys imaginable. It takes dynamic teams with outstanding technical skills to take them from the drawing board to the road. That’s why our experts will treat you as part of the team from day one, encourage you to bring your own ideas to the table – and give you the opportunity to really show what you can do.

We, the BMW Group, offer you an interesting and varied internship in the area of in the virtualization of passive safety, focusing on Python, AI, and FE Human Body Models. Our team “Virtualization in Passive Safety” is developing computational methods and executing finite element simulations to improve the crashworthiness of vehicles by optimizing structural and restraint system components. To support all these issues, we use so-called virtual Human-Body-Models like THUMS (among other tools). In the scope of these Human Body Models (HBMs) we offer a challenging internship broaching multiple application fields: Mainly you will focus on a python-based automatization of pre- as well as post-processing methods including a translation of python-scripts into a user-friendly GUI. Second emphasis is about supporting in the application of Model-Order-Reduction methods like SVD or Autoencoders on HBMs. At the end it is also possible to participate in the execution of finite-element (FE) simulations with HBMs.

What awaits you?

  • You are working in a diverse team of developers as well as PhD candidates.
  • Translation of python-scripts into a general-usable, user-friendly graphical user interface.
  • Support in transferring so-far manual pre- and post-processing methods into automatized procedures, by using python or other coding languages.
  • Implementation and enhancement of multiple approaches of Dimensional-Reduction-Methods (SVD, AutoEncoders, kernelPCA, etc.) in combination with multiple regression model techniques (Linear Regression, Kriging, Neural Networks) with regards to high-order Finite-Element-Simulations with Human-Body-Models.
  • Preparation and conduction of finite element simulations with various Human-Body-Models.

What should you bring along?

  • Master student in Computational Mechanics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or a comparable course of studies in the final year.
  • Deep Knowledge in Python Coding Language as well as methods of deep learning/machine learning/artificial intelligence is a requirement. Acquirements in mathematical statistics and structural mechanics (FE) are important as well.
  • Experience in working with Python (keras, tensorflow, numpy, ..) or other programming languages is necessary. Skills in using Jupyter Notebook scripts is beneficial.
  • Interest to work in the field of two current state-of-the-art research and industrial subjects: Human Body Model Simulations and AI/Model-Order-Reduction.
  • Experience in working with LS-Dyna or any other FE-Solver is convenient.
  • Teamwork and communication skills.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking.

What do we offer?

  • Comprehensive mentoring & onboarding.
  • Personal & professional development.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Digital offers & mobile working.
  • Attractive remuneration.
  • Apartment offers for students (subject to availability & only Munich).
  • And many other benefits - see bmw.jobs/benefits
