Experimental Scientist

Your mission

• Develop and build a target area for a dedicated laser-driven particle source
• Integrate a high-repetition rate target with a 100 Hz 10 J laser system for ion acceleration.
• Implement systems for laser focusing, target diagnostics and target chamber controls.
• Develop and implement neutron converter, collimation systems, cooling systems and optimize the setup to enable stable and efficient ion, neutron and x-ray production.
• Integrate control systems for remote control and operation.
• Development and implementation of automated ion and neutron beam diagnostics.
• Ensuring reliable and stable beam operation for experiments.
• Work together with the target and laser team to optimize the setup and experimental conditions.
• Work with the team to develop and demonstrate multiple applications of laser-driven radiation sources.
• Be responsible for your own project.
• Work collaboratively to build the world’s first LDRS system ready for applications.
• Coordinate with other teams to integrate your results into a larger system.
  
  

Your profile

• PhD in laser-plasma physics or comparable
• Experience in laser-particle acceleration, in particular Target Normal Sheath Acceleration or Laser Wakefield Acceleration (> 4 years)
• Extensive experience at high power lasers and day to day experimental operation (> 2 years accumulated in the lab).
• Previous experience of supervision of your own beamline / experimental setup at a laser facility.
• Experience in leading TNSA or LWFA experimental campaigns (> 3 campaigns as PI)
• Experience as Link Scientist or beamline scientist is helpful.
• Experience with technical drawing is helpful.
• Be highly motivated and have an inner drive to move forward.
• Have the ability to work independently and goal oriented.
• Be able to organize your own workflow.
• Be capable to clearly communicate and present your results.
• Have a startup mentality and be flexible to adapt to changes.
• Be a high-performing person with effective time management.
• Passion for innovative technologies and a commitment to driving sustainable change.
• Be fluent in German and/or English.
• Work on site in the Darmstadt office at least 3 days a week.
