It was an interesting conference. Last week, I went to the #GoogleMarketingLive at the tech giant's new Bay View campus in Mountain View. 5,000 employees work here on a good 100,000 square meters, primarily on the ad business, Google's most important revenue stream. And thus on nothing less than the #internet of the future. There, AIs will soon be tracking users incessantly. Advertisers are delighted, data protectionists alarmed ... 💡 "We are all going through another transformative moment together today, perhaps the most transformative to date," said Google SVP Philipp Schindler on the big stage. "Of course I'm talking about the new #AI era." 💡 The "Marketing Live" takes place a week after the I/O developer conference, at which CEO Sundar Pichai presented the company's new achievements in AI. While I/O is the conference for the headlines, "Marketing Live" is for business. Google has invited hundreds of its closest customers: Advertising and creative agencies, large corporations and family businesses. All of them earn their money with and around Google's advertisements, which generated around 62 billion dollars for the tech giant last quarter. 💡 Now, Google wants to fundamentally transform the online advertising world. republica GmbH is the largest conference for the digital society in Germany and has attracted over 30,000 visits in the last three days. At the same time, it is also the most diverse and, with 57.59% female participants, one of the few digitalization events that attracts even more women than men. The motto of this year's #rp24 was "Who Cares?". Deutsche Bundesbank cares about #money. Together with Tobias Pohl I gave a Lightning Talk on the topic "What is Money?" We started with kauri snails 🐌 , explained the role and function of money 💶 and discussed how our handling of money is changing in the digital society. We also provided an outlook on the future of money and the #DigitalEuro. The talk generated a great deal of interest, and many questions were asked afterward, particularly about the digital euro. Closing the Circle I'm currently working on a new episode of my podcast "Auf der Kippe - Philosophie für das digitale Zeitalter" on #DeepFakes and #SyntheticMedia. Nr. 2👉 What role does AI play in the #Infocalypse? 1️⃣ "Traditional" #AI algorithms curate what part of reality you see on digital and social media. E.g. on Instagram every day approx. 100 mio fotos are newly added. On YouTube every minute 400 hours of new content is uploaded. AI decides based on engagement-based ranking which chunk of the digital world you get to experience. The content itself (text, foto, film, audio etc.) have traditionally been man-made. 2️⃣ Now comes #GenAI. GenAI leads to the content itself beeing AI-generated no matter if it is text, foto, film or audio. A study concludes that by the end of this decade the majority of internet content will be AI generated. The result is AI curating what you see and AI creating what you see and thereby significantly shaping your worldview. For the last 3 years, I worked with Stiftung Mercator GmbH 's Digital Society program as an advisor. My mandate there is coming to a natural end point — I was brought on to help with the early stages of the program, and stayed because there was more than enough to do. By now, the program runs smoothly, the team is top notch, and it's time for me to step back. Needless to say it's on the best terms and I'm sure we'll work together in some constellation or another in the future. Three years is a long time, and a lot happened during that time, but/and I wanted to share just a few personal highlights. >>> Projects & Activities I tremendously enjoyed the various types of projects and activities I was involved in. From high-level strategy to the day-to-day of polishing documents for the board or talking through the day's challenges, it was a good mix. We worked on a broad range of issues including digital rights, strengthening democracy, digital transformation, platform accountability, AI, government digital services, inclusion and diversity, strenghtening civil society, and many more. A stand-out was when we planned what became Agora Digitale Transformation - you don't get to plan a new think tank from scratch every day. From early concept through dozens of expert interviews all the way to approval from the foundation's board, seeing this all come together was really quite something. My personal favorite, though, continues to be the personal one-on-ones (what I sometimes refer to as sparring) to probe and improve on ideas and strategies, and just explore what's next and how to get there. >>> Learned a lot I've never been the type that just sits there and pundits away, I'm always keen to learn as much as I share along the way. Luckily, the team here was the same and so I had the opportunity to learn a lot myself. Deep dives brought some topics more into focus for me, I met a bunch of new folks, and being at the funders table for so long, I got to learn a lot more about different approaches to civil society funding. And of course I got to deepen my understanding of the dynamics and decision-making in philanthropic foundations further. >>> A big Thank You! To the whole team, from program managers to senior management, a huge thank you for the welcoming culture, trust and openness in all our interactions. (I'm not naming everyone individually because I know not everyone enjoys a public shout-out.) It wasn't just a professionally constructive three years, it was also a true pleasure on a personal level. I'd be amiss not to express my gratitude to Carla Hustedt specifically. When we first started talking, I was still recovering from a serious burn-out and getting back on my feet. Carla was unfazed by the dark circles under my eyes and brought me on board, a gesture of trust that meant the world to me on a personal level. Our working together quickly evolved into a friendship, too, and we've been working well together ever since. Thank you, Carla!

Zeit uniquely keeps same subscription price for print and online readers (26 EUR/month). 👉 Product: Make your content "spannend", "lustig", "aktuell", "informativ" ZEIT has invested heavily in its newsroom (from 90 to 470 journalists). The content is no longer organized in the classical categories (Politics, Business,...), but much more thematic, with various new topics as Family, Green, X,... ZEIT now publishes 16 magazines. 👉 Location & promotion: Meet your readers where they are ZEIT is engaging with younger readers on TikTok. It produces 26 podcasts, who have resulted in 20 million downloads. He ended with a positive call-to-action. "Our industry is important. Technology brings endless new opportunites. June 9th is not just a date in the calendar and a reason for everyone to tell that voting is a privilege. It's a chance to shape the future of the continent, our own countries and our communities. Voting is more than a civic duty — it's a profound act of personal hope and commitment! That is why we as Kleinanzeigen placed more than 200 classifieds in Germany to remind people of their right to vote. Free of charge. Simple. For self-collection. 🗳️💚 Having many friends and colleagues from all over Europe and the world, this election is important for me. But they are also important, because they come at a time when Europe faces significant challenges: climate change, economic recovery, social justice, global stability and not to forget the expected shift to the right that threatens not only the center of diverse and inclusive societies, but also Germanys economical position. 💔🌍 For that I like to quote from the AfD's internal ranks "Je schlechter es Deutschland geht, desto besser für die AfD." (engl.: The worse Germany is doing, the better it is for the AfD). Simplified, this quote shows what the AfD and other right-wing parties stand for. Not in favour of the much-vaunted prosperity, but against equality, diversity, support for low earners and single parents etc. Of course we can't influence who votes what. 🔟 Today marks 10 years since relocating to Berlin. It's my 'Berlinaversary'. 🇩🇪 After moving from the US to Germany, I've leveraged this platform to boost my network in meaningful ways – sparring ideas, gaining collaborators, and finding ways to express and exchange perspectives on a blend of topics I care deeply about. 😅 📸 Although this picture is from a non-work trip, it relates to my work. We all need ways to unwind; walking is my key. It's how I get new ideas or get free from overthinking. That day, we were a pack of 11 people, including kids, attempting to descend a mountain in the Harz region of Germany. The trail sign was daunting: 'Proceed at your own risk'. 🥾 It was invigorating to trust oneself & one's boots. To help each other navigate steep turns and rocky terrain and emerge stronger, coordinated, and triumphant. I wish that for all of us here. Know how to approach something intimidating; be safe & keep going. I look forward to the next decade ahead! 🌍🏛️🙏We are happy to share and want to say thank you to Martin Knoll who works as part of the Austrian team led by the Bundesministerium für Soziales, Gesundheit, Pflege und Konsumentenschutz in the Project “EU Resources Hub for sustainable investing in health”, funded by the European Commission’s #DGREFORM under the Technical Support Instrument (TSI). Europeans think that reforms are most needed in the health sector, says this Eurobarometer survey. The project “EU Resources Hub for sustainable investing in health”, funded by the European Commission’s #DGREFORM under the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), is building capacity in Austria, Slovenia and Belgium to make a stronger case for health investments and facilitate access to EU funds to support health reforms. The project has now entered a key implementation phase! This is why project partners and beneficiaries came together to take stock of the project’s progress and discuss the important next steps. During the 3rd Advisory Group meeting, high-level representatives from the European Commission, the Bundesministerium für Soziales, Gesundheit, Pflege und Konsumentenschutz of Austria, the FÖD Volksgesundheit, Sicherheit der Nahrungsmittelkette und Umwelt of Belgium, the Ministrstvo za zdravje of Slovenia, the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and Expertise France as implementing partner, recalled the achievements of the project in strengthening the capacity of the participating Member States to design, fund and prepare the foundations for implementing priority health reforms! The funding component is crucial as it is also the main rationale behind the creation of a future health advisory service ‘EU Health Hub’.     The work under this project has shown us that there is untapped potential to optimise the application of EU instruments and funds and use synergies across EU resources for health to deliver maximum impact. A Hub that advises countries on the use of EU instruments for health could be a first and important step to unlock these opportunities! Through the project, we have developed a pilot Hub with the intention to design a framework that could be available to all MS in the future. Building on these experiences, we continue our journey from concept building to concrete action plans on the possible functioning and operationalization of a future EU Hub. AI: Hopes and Challenges for the Content Industry - that could have been the title of my recent tech column for the German edition of MIT Technology Review DE (if I had written it in English, article linked in the comments. Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the content industry, particularly in the realm of #manga and #anime. While AI-generated images pose a significant challenge in terms of potential copyright infringements, they also offer hope for preserving cultural heritage and accelerating the creative process. The Japanese newspaper Nikkei examined over 90,000 images on popular AI platforms and found that in over 2,500 cases, the shared images resembled characters from well-known manga and anime series. This highlights the potential for economic damage through AI-generated copyright violations, especially for Japan's content industry. However, AI is not solely a tool for plagiarism. It can also serve as a creative assistant. Last year, an unknown artist developed and launched a manga using various AI tools, claiming to have completed the work in just six weeks instead of the usual twelve months. Additionally, the heirs of the late manga legend Osamu #Tezuka plan to use AI to create a new, posthumous episode of the famous "Black Jack" series, demonstrating how AI can help preserve cultural heritage while opening up new creative possibilities. Another company wants to unleash a flood of English manga by the help of AI translation. Furthermore, AI can accelerate the creative process, as demonstrated by the South Korean startup Toonsquare, a company focusing on webtoons. By using AI to convert sketches into sophisticated drawings and offering libraries of action and fight scenes, the company aims to reduce the working time for a webtoon from 60 to six hours. This showcases AI's potential to support artists and boost productivity. My ultimative question remains whether #AI will simply contribute to a greater quantity of content or if it will also enhance the quality of the works produced. For me, the jury is still out about the future of AI: I believe it has the potential to uplift mankind with its rise, or dumb it down, depending of the value system in which it is employed. Yet, the persistently low levels (currently at -24.2) pose a pressing question: When will consumer confidence rebound? 🤯 Here's what this means for startups and the broader economy: 🥶 Consumer Caution: Extended low confidence impacts both B2C and B2B sectors, dampening economic activity. 🤔 Startup Impact: For B2C startups, tough conditions prevail as consumers tighten belts. Niche markets remain promising, yet they demand increasingly creative marketing strategies to capture and retain consumer interest. I witnessed, that a lot of companies struggle with maintaining optimized CAC and navigating to the large option pool of marketing channels. Challenges and Political Actions: 🧰 Toolkit Constraints: Reviving consumer confidence has traditionally required multifaceted approaches, including fiscal policies and regulatory reforms. However, with current inflation concerns, lowering interest rates is less viable, complicating recovery efforts. So, what's next if immediate economic tools are limited? 🥊 Startups and Economic Growth: Startups drive innovation and competitiveness, crucial for job creation and attracting investment, adapting swiftly to market changes. 🥋 AI's Economic Impact: By automating tasks and enhancing data analysis, AI boosts productivity and supports sustainable development across sectors. We need policies that make entrepreneurship more attractive, from university-level encouragement to policy changes like pension fund allocations in startups.
