Does Screenshotbot save on build times? This was a question that surprisingly came up a couple of times at #dcbln24. It probably had something to do with the large number of platform and DevEx folk at the conference. In any case, the answer turns out to be "Yes". More specifically: You'll save 19% in build times on average, and 49% in build times in the P95 case. The savings come from avoiding re-runs when screenshots change. Interesting discussion with Dave Farley and Emily Bache. There are a lot of things that I agree with in it, however the one main sticking point that I have is that a true "engineer" in the more common incarnations, Mechanical, Civil, etc, require registration and licensing from a local state/district and/or governing body. I'd LOVE for programming to have such a system, but we currently don't. That's one reason why I settle with code craft and call myself a crafter. I agree it's not a perfect term, but to me its better than giving the false impression that there's a standard of skillset or understanding like other engineering disciplines. "Modern composability" is the focus of today's #TechnicallySpeaking newsletter... and I bet most of my network is still wondering what "composability" really means, and why it should matter to them. It matters. I'm really grateful to Prashant Choudhary for opening my eyes to how the notion of composability identifies an elusive quality attribute. It's the secret to making our technology last for many years, while at the same time empowering us to creatively extend and recombine what we have to accomplish new things. Having a ton of fun writing an ORM for V2 of Case Kit. Typescript has such an incredible type system. I have autocompletion for column names, the ability to include relations, relations of relations, etc etc etc... all returning properly typed data (no classes in sight). It's been really satisfying seeing it coming together, and it's been great getting my hands dirty with some (relatively) complex generics. And to head off the obvious question… why aren’t I just using Prisma? Well there’s a couple of things I’m doing differently that I think are marginally better: there’s no code generation involved here, it’s just types (inspired by Drizzle); there’s no Rust binary you need to deploy, and it hews much closer to Postgres behaviour and syntax (the aim here is not to abstract away which database you’re using). But the real blocker to me using Prisma was that its extensions don’t support modifying queries of nested relations - a hard requirement for me due to the way I have multitenancy and soft deletes set up. It’s not shown in the video but the Case Kit ORM lets you write simple middleware that will be applied to every level of a nested query. Perfect for setting timestamps or adding clauses on tenant id or things like that.

So far, I am not impressed with the early drafts of the post-open source license. It can put your business for 1% of revenue - which most major businesses try to avoid. And it doesn't even touch yet how they will split that 1% between contributors - which is not a problem we know how to solve fairly. Oh, and you cannot use it in your software products, SaaS, or shrink-wrapped - as that would put your customers into the same "give us 1% of your revenue" category. https://lnkd.in/gXvjAeYX

Which is exactly why the decisions around what to change and more importantly why you want it change it is rooted in the NON-technical side. Without a code linked specification these decisions will gradually move away from the non-technical stakeholders and towards the technical side who can only rely on the assumption of alignment.

When I was still at TechCrunch I would get asked quite often, ‘why do you write so many funding stories?’ Implicit (if not explicit) in their question was usually a criticism of the tech and business press’ seeming obsession with funding rounds. My view, especially at the early stage, was always that a startup raising funding was a market signal where very few other signals existed yet. Meanwhile, at the later stages when rounds are much larger and companies wield more market power, a fundraise as a signal is not only stronger but warrants greater examination. In the news business, a funding round also qualifies as “hard news" and offers a springboard to tell various broader stories - such as the founders’ story, delving into an interesting or novel problem space, the company’s progress to date, a new technology or consumer trend, societal implications, and so on. Our latest release this morning took twice as long to get out and a LOT of slack messages over the weekend. But the early data looks like it was worth it. As a startup, it's hard to know when we should focus on refactoring and rewriting our core product versus investing in new features. This release, we took the time to make significant changes to our fine-tuning stack – a big deal for a fine-tuning company – to keep up with all the latest advances in the market. We also had a clear user goal in mind: we wanted to massively speed up training so people spent less time looking at a spinner in our UI while their model fine-tuned. We've started to see 10x speed-ups and I've seen a dataset that was taking us 6+ hours to train on before now get done in less than 30 minutes. A lot of credit to the team that helped make that possible, some of our key learnings were: ⚡️ Tune for speed and token throughput during the training process with dynamic batch size and learning rate schedulers. ⚡️Fused optimizers over paged optimizers when optimizing for training time, and integrating well-proven techniques like flash-attention 2. ⚡️Hardware matters – better hardware rightsizing so models are optimized for GPU utilization on the latest chips we have access to. Simplify By Streamlining: The Shift from RBAC to ABAC.  In almost all engineering disciplines, artifacts developed to represent a concept (conceptual artifacts) are very different than the artifacts of its eventual realization (applied artifacts).   Examples:   * A programmer uses multiple abstract layers to manage complexity, which a compiler later simplifies for performance.   * A civil engineer works with detailed blueprints and models, which differ significantly from the final structure.    Similarly, in Identity & Access Management (IAM), several layers of abstractions in the form of policies, roles, entitlements are defined to manage the complexity and integration across different business units.   Is there a possibility of simplifying these abstractions “while in-use" such that decision maker can comprehend the implications intuitively and/or system can compile them into permissions that can be efficiently enforced?   More on this topic coming soon. A CTO should aways be looking for better, less expensive and more predicable ways to get the best out of people and resources while reducing costs and supercharging innovation. So, I have an idea. All political parties make a manifesto as to what they will achieve in the next 5 years. They have one budget in the 5 years and that is it. Take backsies only allowed if the idea is clearly not working and in the case of exception circumstances like a pandemic. No mini budgets, no fiscal events, now swapsies a very few months. Say what you want to do and do it.
