    Today’s corporations face an amplified need to innovate. In the context of globally disruptive start-up activities, Corporate Innovation Centers are an increasingly popular instrument to support and extend the innovation strategy of core business domains. Companies build their own accelerators, incubators or labs as corporate innovation centers to leverage upon the start-up global ecosystems, to gather trends and insights as well as to benefit from quick idea development. We call these multi-faceted instruments X-ators and focused our research on facilities that actively work with or invest in start-ups.

    In 2016, the German landscape of corporate innovation centers amounted to approximately 30 facilities in comparison to 7,000 globally. We interviewed the majority of the current players in the German market for a deep dive into their setup of operations and to point out their most significant learnings, critical success factors as well as benefits and concerns of the first years in the market.

    We see the potential for corporate X-ators to become great success stories. Already today, all of our interviewees say they would do it again. Given their identified benefits, we strongly encourage every large and midsized company to consider setting up an innovation center as part of their innovation strategy.

    This Point of View starts with an introduction to the corporate innovation challenge in comparison to the lean innovation process of start-ups and offers a discussion on how to team up these two worlds. It continues with an overview on the German landscape of corporate innovation centers and provides a detailed analysis of their driving forces, motivations and design decisions. The final synthesis includes an overall evaluation, identifies critical success factors and ends with our recommendation.
