The Solar and Storage Industries Institute (SI2), an arm of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), has put forth two proposals for transmission interconnection reforms to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). These proposals aim to address concerns about the increasing costs and wait times associated with connecting new solar and storage projects to the transmission grid. The first proposal suggests integrating the interconnection queue into regional transmission planning processes, while the second proposes a formula for fairly allocating transmission system costs to interconnection customers. 🔋 There’s a critical role that #EnergyStorage & #BatteryTechnology plays in contributing to solving Southeast Asia's (SEA) #EnergyTransition. 📈 According to researchers from Korea University, global installed battery energy storage system (#BESS) capacity is currently at 45 gigawatts (GW) but expected to reach 500GW by 2030—an 11X increase in the next 6 years! 🚀 SEA is seeing it's own major advances in BESS capacity, with #Singapore launching the region's largest BESS facility last year with 200MW/285MWh capacity and surpassing its own goal of 200MWh energy storage by 2025. 🏎 However large this may sound, #electricvehicles are expected to drive the lion's share of battery cell demand: they currently account for around 79% of global battery demand but this is expected to reach 86% (~3600GWh) by 2032. DECARBONIZED POWER / LTDA : Grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) were the biggest winners in Japan’s first ever long-term decarbonized power auction, which was held in January, showing that investments in the innovative green technology are well worth the risk. That first auction, which was conducted under the auspices of the Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators (OCCTO), proved to be most profitable for BESS and pumped hydro storage developers. The government had allocated over 1.6 GW of capacity for 30 such projects. Nevertheless, even though the government introduced the scheme to promote and finance a shift away from fossil fuels, it supported the co-firing of ammonia or hydrogen with coal. Also, the auction had a separate category for gas-fired capacity from LNG. Such an approach initially raised concerns that METI would use the scheme to prop up thermal generation. Contrary to speculation, however, the auction results announced on April 26 showed that officials are not trying to slow the transition to renewables. In fact, the low-commitment auction criteria left both the government and developers with room for second thoughts. So, how can we be sure that all of the winning projects will come online? How will the results affect the next auction? 🔬✨ New research from King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok introduces a methodology for assessing distributed PV systems, highlighting the importance of avoiding oversizing to improve levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Unlike traditional approaches focused on profit maximization, this method considers overvoltage-induced curtailment, yielding a more sustainable and efficient outcome. Findings showed a 58.33% reduction in PV system sizing could prevent curtailment, albeit with a 21.34% reduction in net present value (NPV) and a 22.96% increase in LCOE. In this groundbreaking auction, a whopping 1.09 GW of battery storage capacity has been allocated across 30 projects, highlighting Japan's commitment to harnessing cutting-edge energy storage technologies. Additionally, the auction assigned 1.3 GW of nuclear power capacity, underlining the nation's diverse energy mix strategy. But that's not all! (DENEFF) Energy Innovation Policy and Technology LLC ⏬⏬⏬ This study investigates the #potential for direct #electrification of #industrial process #heat in the EU-27 and considers technologies that are available today or expected to be available by 2035 at the latest, including electric #boilers, #heatpumps, #resistance heating, #induction heating, #plasma heating, #electric arc furnaces, shock-wave heating and thermal storage technologies. The #electrification potential is calculated individually for seven industrial sectors and substantiated by an analysis of specific process heat requirements for 14 individual applications, assuming that increased #efforts will be undertaken to develop electric heating technologies and the corresponding processes. This approach takes into account the considerable #diversity of process heating types across the various industrial production processes. Recycling and other circularity practices within various sectors of the energy transition are becoming increasingly important. The China Photovoltaic Test Center (CPTV) stands as the largest center for the inspection and testing of solar PV panels in China. CPTV plays a crucial role in providing access to certifications for both international and domestic markets and boasts comprehensive testing capabilities across the entire PV industrial chain, from raw materials to solar farms. Acting as a bridge between the government and industry leaders, CPTV ensures that the solar industry receives accurate and effective policy advice. Our colleagues Jason Jin and Floor van den Brink, who are based at the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Shanghai, recently visited CPTV to discuss recycling and other circularity practices within the Chinese solar industry. It was an excellent opportunity to connect and gain valuable insights into China's advancements toward a circular economy! These insights are particularly important to the Netherlands Innovation Network China as our colleague Floor van den Brink is conducting a research project to assess China's current standing in circular energy practices relative to that of the Netherlands.
