#Samsung Starts Mass Production of 9th Generation V-NAND: 1Tb 3D TLC NAND 💡 Samsung Electronics has started mass production of its 9th generation of V-NAND #memory. The first dies based on their latest #NAND #tech come in a 1 Tb capacity using a triple-level cell (TLC) architecture, with #data transfer rates as high as 3.2 GT/s. The new 3D TLC NAND memory will initially be used to build high-capacity and high-performance #SSDs, which will help to solidify Samsung's position in the storage market. Diving right in, Samsung is conspicuously avoiding to list the number of layers in their latest generation NAND, which is the principle driving factor in increasing capacity generation-on-generation. The company's current 8th gen V-NAND is 236 layers – similar to its major competitors – and word on the street is that 9th gen V-NAND ups that to 290 layers, though this remains to be confirmed. #Kioxia sampling highest capacity #NAND #chip at 2 terabits 🤯🤩 KIOXIA Group is sample shipping 2 terabit NAND chips, the highest capacity NAND #chips available. They have a #QLC (4bits/cell) design and use Kioxia’s BiCS 8 218-layer flash node architecture. Compared to the prior BiCS 6 generation, with 162 layers, the new chip has scaled its cells down in size both laterally and vertically. An intervening BiCS 7 generation was abandoned in favor of BiCS 8. Kioxia says that a stack of 16 x 2 Tb dies will provide 4 TB of capacity in a single package. Such a package is available with a size of 11.5 x 13.5 mm and height of 1.5 mm. STMicroelectronics to Build €5 Billion Plant in #Italy with #EU Chips Act Aid STMicroelectronics NV said it plans to spend €5 billion ($5.4 billion) on a #manufacturing plant for #chips and packaging in #Catania, #Italy in a multi-year project that’s being partly funded by the #EuropeanUnion's #ChipsAct. The Italian government, within the Chips Act framework, will give STMicro €2 billion in #subsidies, the company said in a statementon Friday. The plant, which will specialize in silicon-carbide manufacturing as well as testing and packaging, will start production in 2026 and targets hitting full capacity by 2033, it said. Infineon Technologies is on schedule with the construction of the Smart Power Fab in Dresden and is initiating the final construction phase. During a visit, the Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, officially handed over the last outstanding building permit for the new fab issued by the State Directorate of Saxony. With a total investment of 5 billion euros, the company is making a significant contribution to the European Commission goal to increase the EU’s share of global #semiconductor production to 20 percent by 2030. The semiconductors manufactured in Dresden will secure future value chains in key European industries. The products manufactured in the new production facility will be used in the #automotive and #renewable energy industries. The interaction of #powersemiconductors and analog/mixed-signal components enables particularly energy-efficient and intelligent system solutions – hence the name Smart Power Fab.

Sales of #Galaxy #foldables drop heavily, a cause for concern for #Samsung Samsung Electronics had the first movers advantage in the foldable #smartphone segment. Its Galaxy Z #smartphones were way ahead of the competition, but that isn't the case anymore. The company is falling behind in terms of #hardware improvements, and that has started to show up in sales charts. The sales of Samsung's foldable smartphones dropped sharply this year. According to the latest figures from market research firm Counterpoint Technology Market Research Research, the shipments of Samsung's Galaxy Z series foldable #phones dropped 42% in Q1 2024 compared to last year. Samsung dropped from the first rank to the second position in the list of top foldable smartphone brands. Huawei overtook Samsung and reached a market share of 35%. The shipments of the #Chinese brand's foldable phones rose by 257% (2.57x) compared to Q1 2023. STMicroelectronics Maintains Top Spot with 32.6% Market, onsemi Rises to Second Place in 2023 Revenue Ranking for #SiC Power Devices, Says TrendForce Corporation 💡 TrendForce 集邦科技 reports that the SiC power devices industry maintained strong growth in 2023, driven by the application of #BEVs. The top five suppliers accounted for approximately 91.9% of total revenue; ST lead the pack with a 32.6% market share while onsemi rose from fourth place in 2022 to second place. TrendForce’s analysis indicates that demand from #AI #servers and other fields will significantly increase in 2024. 2024 Wafer Fab Equipment revenue will remain stable before a 2025 surge Wafer Fab Equipment (WFE) revenue is estimated to increase in 2024 by +1.3% year-on-year (YoY) to $108.1B. This is due to a WFE expenditure increase across advanced logic as well as #NAND and #DRAM memory, while legacy node investment is robust. Stronger 2024 growth in service and support revenue is expected, at + 6%YoY to $23.5B, due to increasing fab utilization rates worldwide. In the long term, WFE revenue is expected to have a +4.3% CAGR24-29, reaching $133.7B in 2029, while service and support revenue will be $27.6B in 2029, at a +3.3%CAGR24-29. The moderate growth rate is due to the large WFE revenue increase in 2021-2022, which is related to the large demand for semiconductor devices. As device revenue declined in 2023, the ratio of WFE revenue as a % of semiconductor device revenue reached as high as 19%. In particular, investments in Greater #China (domestic and foreign) ensured the overall WFE did not decline in 2023, and similar investment levels should continue in 2024. However, such high #investments by #chipmakers will not be sustainable in the long term and are expected to decline slowly due to continuous WFE buyouts, with capacity exceeding production needs, governmental incentives, and general increases in chip production costs. ASMPT Ltd Reportedly Provided Demo TC Bonder to Micron Technology for #HBM Production 💡 Driven by #memory giants ramping up high-bandwidth #memory (HBM) production, according to a report from Korean media outlet TheElec, ASMPT, a back-end equipment maker, has supplied a demo thermal compression (TC) bonder for #Micron's HBM production. TC bonders play a pivotal role in HBM production by employing thermal compression to bond and stack #chips on processed wafers, thereby significantly influencing HBM yield. #ASMPT is reportedly collaborating with the #USA memory giant to co-develop a TC bonder for use in #HBM4 production. Etch selectivity refers to the ability to selectively remove certain materials from the wafer while leaving others intact. Pattern fidelity, on the other hand, refers to the accuracy and consistency with which the desired patterns are transferred onto the wafer during the etching process.
