The UBS Global Family Office Report 2024 reveals a shift towards a more balanced portfolio mix of bonds and equities among family offices. This adjustment seems to be in response to a changing economic landscape marked by moderating inflation and declining policy rates. Regardless, family offices worldwide have kept their largest regional allocations in North America. As more than a third of them plan to increase allocations to North America and Asia Pacific in the next five years, these regions are proving to be top investment destinations. Sustainability is also becoming an increasingly important topic affecting not just family offices’ investment portfolios, but also the long-term outlook of operating businesses. London-based healthcare investor GHO Capital, the company’s owner since 2020, would retain a minority shareholding in the contract research organisation alongside its founder António Parada, according to people familiar with the matter. The sale marks the biggest exit in GHO’s history, with the private equity group generating close to a potential 10-fold return after it bought a majority stake in FairJourney for just over €50mn four years ago, according to PitchBook. The deal follows a competitive auction process, with Partners swooping in at the last minute to outbid rival private equity investors. This optimism, coupled with greater financing availability, is expected to boost activity in the coming quarters. Notably, take-privates and carve-outs are on the rise, with US$92 billion in deals announced, highlighting opportunities despite recent public equity gains. Tech investment remains strong, but sectors like consumer and financials have seen increased interest. Sponsor-to-sponsor deals are also up amid an exit drought, with secondary exits accounting for 26% of Q1 activity. As traditional lenders reassert themselves, credit conditions are stabilizing, supporting a more active market. With expectations of stable or improving credit conditions and cautious underwriting, PE firms are poised for growth.
