I had two inspiring days at the #UX360 Research Summit in Berlin last week. Here are my two key takeaways: 1️⃣ 𝗨𝗫 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. • Emmanuelle Savarit, PhD Savarit gave a clear talk on how to reflect and demonstrate the ROI of UX research in the organisation to increase influence and budgets. • Arno Papenheim and Nicole Bacchus also stressed the importance of permanently communicating the business impact of research and how to drive action. • Javier Andrés Bargas-Avila Bargas-Avila made a nice statement that conducting research is half the job. The other half is “post-research”, which is about pushing research results into the organisation. • Soma Ray had an awesome talk about different company cultures even within the same company, which explains quite well why UX researchers might not have enough impact on other stakeholder teams. Overall, I also realised that UX KPIs are still disconnected from business KPI systems and therefore lack stakeholder support. And conversely, UX researchers need to get trained in business. 🧠 While I think it's super important to be more aware of this issue, I missed a crucial point that was not very well represented at the conference, but which would be the key to solving the first observation. 🔑 2️⃣ 𝗔𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗫 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵. There were only few speakers talking about AI and UX, which gave me the impression that AI has not yet arrived in real life UX research. UX is still very much circling around its own problems… In my opinion, AI is the solution to problem #1 above. Why? 🤔 AI has a huge potential to increase the productivity and impact of UX professionals within their organisations, giving them the desired seat at the table. Dieter Rams revolutionized consumer product design in the '50s, '60s and '70s. His approach created beauty through an obsessive focus on the reality of users' everyday lives. Useful, beautiful, and understandable. Complexity being the enemy of utility. His motto: 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿. LESS, BUT BETTER. In both Ops and our personal lives, we try to solve our problems with more. More tools. More people. More entertainment. MORE. Simplicity = speed, flexibility, and, most importantly, ADOPTION. Imagine a two by two: one axis is labeled idealist / realist, the other is humanist / economist... there are multiple scenarios for how the future of design leadership could play out, with no single future being true, but with them all, in greater or lesser degrees, occurring simultaneously. In the end, all we can do is to identify the type of future we want to have happen, and for us each, in our own sphere, to do our best, worthily and well, no matter how great or small, to make that future manifest.
