With the integration of advanced electronics and sensors, it will become a central element of modern vehicles, significantly enhancing both safety and comfort. The next generation of windshields will be equipped with Head-up Displays (HUDs) that project important information such as speed, navigation, and warnings directly into the driver's line of sight. Augmented Reality (AR) takes it a step further by projecting navigation instructions and hazard alerts directly onto the road ahead. In everyday use, these features can greatly assist drivers. An AR-HUD can provide alerts for traffic signs, real-time weather data, and construction warnings. It can also display available parking spots nearby in real time, making the search for parking much easier. Such information improves navigation and contributes to overall road safety. 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀, 𝗢𝗳𝗳-𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 Beyond everyday use, high-tech windshields offer significant advantages in special applications. On the race track, an AR-HUD helps drivers find the optimal racing line and highlights other vehicles. It can even visualize the anticipated driving line of another car, enhancing decision-making and safety on the track. When maneuvering large vehicles like trucks or buses, detailed overlays can assist operators. For example, AR-HUDs can minimize blind spots, show precise distances to obstacles, and suggest optimal maneuvering paths. In operating large machines such as cranes, real-time overlays can support safe and efficient operation by providing information on load weights and swing areas. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗻���𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 However, integrating these advanced technologies is not without challenges. The costs for manufacturing and repairing high-tech windshields are significantly higher than for traditional models. Production costs can increase by up to 50%, impacting the vehicle's final price. Repairs are also more complex and expensive, requiring specialized expertise and equipment. Another aspect is the necessary collaboration between automakers, technology providers, and suppliers. Developing and implementing these technologies requires a high degree of coordination and integration, which can increase development times and costs. 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 Despite the higher costs and technical challenges, the benefits outweigh them.     𝗔 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗧𝗘𝗖 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 To foster team spirit and enjoy some well-deserved time together, the winTEC team recently embarked on a memorable trip to Lake Constance. Over two days, we balanced productive workshops with fun-filled activities, creating lasting memories and strengthening our bond. Here's a recap of our adventure. 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 On Thursday, we kicked off our winTEC team event with a delightful lunch by Lake Constance, enjoying the breathtaking views and fueling up for the adventures ahead. Afterward, we dove into our workshops, focusing on company direction, team building, and in-depth technical sessions. The Functional Safety case studies and team tasks were true brain workouts – we could almost see the gears turning! In the evening, we headed to a cozy beer garden right by the lake. With regional specialties and a beer or two, we reflected on the day. The evening ended with an epic game night, where many team members revealed hidden talents. We laughed so much that it was practically an ab workout. 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮 Friday morning began with fresh ideas and even fresher coffee as we continued with our workshops. A highlight was the Software Development Team Challenge, where we developed a concept for an ECU. Who knew so many creative minds also needed so many creative coffee cups? In the afternoon, we ventured into the high ropes course. Here, we unleashed our inner Tarzans, and fear of heights became something other people had. Every jump and crossing felt like a new episode in our personal action movie. Our team event at Lake Constance was an unforgettable adventure full of laughter, creativity, and team spirit. A big thank you to the entire team for the fantastic time and the many unforgettable moments.     𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 The safety of autonomous vehicles is generally rated positively by researchers. Studies show that automated vehicles are safer than human-driven ones in most situations. However, certain traffic scenarios pose significant challenges. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹���𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 Turning and twilight are the biggest challenges for autonomous vehicles. The accident probability is more than five times higher at twilight and twice as high when turning, compared to human-driven vehicles. These scenarios require quick decisions and precise control, areas where autonomous systems need improvement. Another weak point for autonomous vehicles is construction zones and unexpected traffic situations. Accidents in construction zones are five times more likely for autonomous vehicles than for human drivers. This indicates that autonomous systems struggle to quickly adapt to changing environments. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 Despite these challenges, autonomous vehicles offer significant safety advantages. Their ability to detect and avoid objects, precise control, and better decision-making make them safer in many scenarios. In rain, the accident probability for autonomous vehicles is only one-third that of human-driven vehicles. Radar sensors provide them with a range of up to 150 meters, while human drivers often have to manage with much less. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 The future of autonomous vehicles looks promising. With advancing technology and continuous improvement in sensors and algorithms, autonomous systems are becoming increasingly safer. Developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning are particularly helping autonomous vehicles respond better to unexpected situations. Companies like ZKW, FORVIA HELLA, BMW Group, and AUDI AG are leveraging innovative technologies to enhance both vehicle safety and design. But what does this revolution look like, and what impact does it have on the future of mobility? 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗘𝗗𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗔 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗽 Traditional halogen lamps are a thing of the past. Today's vehicles utilize LED and laser technologies that are more efficient and provide better illumination. For instance, BMW's laser headlights offer a range of up to 600 meters, improving visibility at night and in adverse weather conditions such as fog or rain. 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 One of the most exciting developments in lighting technology is adaptive lighting systems. These systems automatically adjust to driving conditions. Audi's Matrix LED system sets a new standard, capable of illuminating specific areas while dimming others to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic, significantly enhancing safety for all road users. Another example is Hella's digital lighting technology, which integrates cameras and sensors to analyze the vehicle's surroundings and adjust the light distribution accordingly. This dynamic light adjustment greatly improves driver safety and comfort. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Lighting technology also significantly impacts vehicle design. Manufacturers use light signatures to strengthen brand identity while enhancing safety. Audi's dynamic turn signals not only look stylish but also clearly communicate the driver's intentions. ZKW takes it a step further by developing lighting systems seamlessly integrated into the vehicle's body for a more futuristic look. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 The future of lighting technology could become even smarter and more connected. The safety industry, led by ZF LIFETEC, is on the brink of a groundbreaking innovation: airbags that learn to see. Supported by advanced sensors and cameras, the next generation of airbags will operate with greater precision and effectiveness to save lives. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘀: 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 Interior cameras play a crucial role in this new technology. These cameras can measure the size and weight of passengers and relay this information to the airbag systems. This makes it possible to adjust the airbag's internal pressure according to the individual stature and position of the occupants. This personalized deployment significantly enhances the protective effect by addressing the specific needs of each passenger. 𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗴 A highlight of the new airbag generation is the "Dual Contour" driver airbag. This two-stage airbag responds to the driver’s seating position. It deploys differently when the driver is upright compared to when they are in a reclined position, such as during autonomous driving. This adaptability ensures that the driver is optimally protected in any situation. 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗴: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Another innovation is the two-stage side airbag with a pre-crash function, integrated into the car door. When the sensors detect an unavoidable side collision, the first stage of the airbag is triggered 200 milliseconds before the calculated crash time. An air cushion pushes the occupant about six centimeters toward the center of the vehicle, away from the door. Upon actual impact, the second stage of the airbag deploys, providing significantly more space and thus improving the protective effect. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 These new developments vividly demonstrate how technology can further improve road safety. Airbags that can adapt their deployment and effectiveness to specific conditions and the state of the occupants represent a quantum leap in safety technology. They show that even established safety products like airbags still have considerable development potential. This advanced braking technology, which uses electromechanical components instead of traditional hydraulic systems, is currently being strongly promoted, particularly in China, and could shape the future of braking technology. 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗲-𝗯𝘆-𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗲 The brake-by-wire system employs electric motors and electronic control impulses to replace the mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the brakes. This brings several advantages: -Weight Reduction and Space Saving: Without the need for hydraulic lines and brake fluid, vehicles can be designed to be lighter and more compact. -Higher Safety: Multiple redundant systems ensure higher reliability and significantly improve the Time to Wheel Lock (TTL) compared to hydraulic brakes. -Integration with Autonomous Technology: Brake-by-wire systems can be seamlessly integrated into autonomous vehicle systems, as they can process commands from both the driver and computers. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 While companies like ZF Group in Germany are considered pioneers of this technology, China has recognized the strategic importance of brake-by-wire and is pushing its development and implementation vigorously. Chinese suppliers, such as BWI GROUP, are already working on series productions that are set to start by 2025. This technological advance could give China a significant competitive advantage. If Chinese manufacturers succeed in producing brake-by-wire systems more cost-effectively and efficiently, they could capture substantial market shares from established Western and Japanese manufacturers. What's more important is how a young leader interacts with their team. As long as respect, openness, and clear communication are prioritized, age becomes secondary, and the need to "assert oneself" often disappears. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀 Whether a new team member or an experienced manager, we should all recognize that there is much to learn from those around us. With this mindset, collaboration on an equal footing is effortless. Therefore, I'm especially pleased to welcome Raphael Weißler and Mario to our team.     𝗙ü𝗵𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝗺 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 In den unterschiedlichen Herausforderungen in meinem bisherigen Berufsleben kam oft die Frage aus meinem privaten Umfeld: “Wie kannst du dich als junge Führungskraft überhaupt durchsetzen?” Meine Antwort: “Falscher Denkansatz!” 𝗗𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗸 Natürlich ist Erfahrung auch in der Führung extrem hilfreich, doch jeder fängt mal klein an. Viel wichtiger: Die Art und Weise wie eine junge Führungskraft ihren Mitarbeitern gegenüber tritt. Solange Respekt, Offenheit und klare Kommunikation an erster Stelle stehen, ist das Alter zweitrangig und “durchsetzen” muss man sich dann meistens gar nicht mehr. 𝗟𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻 Egal ob junger Mitarbeiter oder erfahrener Manager. Jedem von uns sollte bewusst sein, dass er von seinen Mitmenschen viel lernen kann. Mit diesem Mindset ist eine Zusammenarbeit auf Augenhöhe ein Kinderspiel. Und deshalb freue ich mich umso mehr Raphael Weißler und Mario in unserem Team begrüßen zu dürfen.     𝗡𝗜𝗦𝟮: 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆? With the adoption of the Network and Information Security Directive 2.0 (NIS2 Directive) in December 2022, the European Union has taken a significant step towards strengthening cybersecurity. The new regulations not only set higher standards for companies and public institutions but also extend their scope to a total of 18 critical sectors, including new areas such as aerospace and public administration. The NIS2 Directive will come into force on October 18, 2024, giving companies some time to prepare for the new requirements. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗜𝗦𝟮 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 The NIS2 Directive brings a series of obligations that are of great importance for both large and medium-sized companies. Particularly noteworthy is the role of management in ensuring cybersecurity. In the future, management will be personally responsible for the implementation and compliance with security measures. This means that a blanket delegation of these tasks will no longer be sufficient. Companies should therefore start analyzing the new requirements and planning implementation measures now to prepare for the legislative changes. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 The NIS2 Directive now extends to a variety of new sectors. These include the healthcare sector, where all manufacturers of medical devices, including wearables such as fitness trackers, are now subject to cybersecurity requirements. This expansion means that many companies that were previously unregulated must now implement cybersecurity measures. A good example of this is the automotive industry: manufacturers must ensure that their entire supply chain meets the new requirements. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 A central element of the NIS2 Directive is risk management. Companies are required to take appropriate technical, operational, and organizational measures to ensure the security of their network and information systems. These include, among others: Policies and concepts: Development and implementation of security concepts and policies. Business continuity: Measures to maintain operations, including backup management and crisis management. Incident management: Efficient handling of security incidents. Supply chain security: Ensuring the security of the entire supply chain to consider and manage security-related aspects. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 The NIS2 Directive takes cybersecurity to a new level and makes it a top priority for company management.     𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 Continental, in collaboration with Qualcomm, has implemented the first cross-domain high-performance computer in a vehicle. This technology allows functions such as cockpit management and the vehicle system to operate on a single platform. This could reduce the complexity of vehicle systems and lower costs. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀? This type of high-performance computer combines various functions on a single hardware platform. Traditionally, different systems in a vehicle required separate control units. By integrating these onto a chip, such as Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride Flex SoC, such systems could become more efficient and cost-effective. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 The most obvious advantage is cost savings. Less hardware means lower material costs and simplified assembly. Additionally, this integration could speed up communication between vehicle systems, which is especially beneficial for safety features. However, this centralization also carries risks. A central computing unit could present a greater vulnerability to system failures. If the central computer fails, potentially all integrated functions could be affected. Moreover, this technology requires a very robust software architecture and security to be prepared against external threats. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 The potential applications for such high-performance computers are diverse: 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴: Improved processing capacity could facilitate the implementation of safer autonomous driving functions. 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Faster processing could advance the development of vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems that contribute to accident prevention. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: In electric vehicles, more efficient control of electronics could lead to better battery usage. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 Although the benefits of integrating a cross-domain high-performance computer are significant, the risks must also be carefully considered. It remains to be seen how this technology will perform in practice, particularly regarding reliability and safety. The automotive industry faces the challenge of implementing this new technology in a way that is both efficient and safe. The introduction of cross-domain high-performance computers raises important questions: How can we ensure the safety of these systems?
