    Unsere Meinung zur Kraftwerksstrategie: das reicht nicht. Letzte Woche wurden wichtige Eckpunkte zur Kraftwerksstrategie veröffentlicht, darunter auch der Ausbau von Langzeitspeichern im Umfang von 0,5 GW zur Unterstützung von Gaskraftwerken. Damit soll das Stromnetz in Zeiten von Dunkelflauten mit wenig Sonne oder Wind stabilisiert und die Versorgungssicherheit gewährleistet werden. Angesichts des mittel- bis langfristigen Ziels der Klimaneutralität bis 2045 und der Notwendigkeit, wesentlich mehr Erneuerbare Energien ans Netz zu bringen, erscheinen 0,5 GW jedoch stark unterdimensioniert. 0,5 GW entsprechen ungefähr 1/8 der im letzten Jahr insgesamt zugebauten Speicherleistung. Wenn diese Zahl im Vergleich zu den geplanten zusätzlichen 10 GW bei Gaskraftwerken steht, wird das Dilemma noch deutlicher: Anstatt einen Technologie-offenen Kapazitätsmarkt zu schaffen, wo sich die besten, preiswertesten und CO2 ärmsten Technologien durchsetzen können, werden weiterhin auf Jahre hinweg Gaskraftwerke gefördert und die fossile Abhängigkeit zementiert.     Our first ISB Day! While at VoltStorage, several teams and departments are working with high enthusiasm towards a common goal – developing and producing the Iron Salt Battery to make renewable energy available day and night – it is important to hold off from daily work, spend time together and share experiences, review and report on past achievements and define objectives for the next period. By this, all jigsaw pieces of the different working streams and project groups come together and make the final, common goal visible: our battery 🔋. It was highly inspirational and encouraging to see how much we have been achieving so far, that we are already acknowledged by the market and many influencers, and that we are on track in our timeline to deliver a high-quality, sustainable, cost-effective and competitive solution for Long Duration Energy Storage. 👉 The key aspect behind all this is innovation and communication: doing things noone has ever done before, diving into new territories when it comes to electrochemical processes, observing tests, collecting and reading data, drawing conclusions and use it for continuous improvements and progress on the final solution. And of course, making learnings and findings avialable for everyone in the company, exchange and support each other, understanding each other’s needs and what impact one’s own work has on others. We start with high positivity and confidence into Quarter 3 and are already looking forward to seeing how our achievements so far bring us and our Iron Salt Battery to the next level.     Last week, our colleagues Verena Graf, John Alper, Nebojša Zec and Julian Lechner attended IFBF - International Flow Battery Forum in Glasgow. In addition to provide stage for John´s speech on our Iron Salt Battery development, the event was the perfect platform to connect, learn and exchange.    Both encouraging and obvious were the significant advancements in the flow battery sector, being addressed and talked about. The conference highlighted the installation of large-scale projects, emphasizing the need to meet the ambitious energy storage targets we all need to reach by 2030.     Consequently, Julian observed many signs for a strong demand for Long Duration Energy Storage LDES solutions, with the flow battery community ensuring to meet this need sustainably and cost-effectively. For him, the forum's optimistic mood underscored the recognition of opportunities and the importance of collaboration to establish flow batteries as a reliable energy storage technology.     According to John, forecasting in the current project-based production environment is challenging and costs are currently high. However, there is potential for cost reductions through increased automation, akin to the solar industry's cost evolution.    Nebojsa emphasized the importance of industry-wide cooperation to overcome challenges and develop standards necessary for scaling production and supply chains.     The conference underlined how necessary it is to collectively work together to achieve 24/7 renewable energy. It also offered valuable technical insights applicable to VoltStorage's Iron Salt Battery technology, as well as opportunities that will enable future collaboration with suppliers.    Our big thank you goes to the organisers at #IFBF for setting up such an insightful, expertise-driven and educational high-class event!     It's such a pleasure hosting session featuring some of the brightest minds in the field of flow batteries. 🔋 Ewan Fraser from the University of Southampton kicked off the session with an in-depth look at the development and characterisation of a kW scale soluble lead flow battery. 🔋 Fengjing Jiang from CIC energiGUNE presented the advantages and challenges of the iron-lead single-flow battery for large-scale energy storage. 🔋 David Graf from VŠCHT Praha - UCT Prague discussed flow batteries with zinc electrodes, focusing on deposition and battery operation across various pH levels. 🔋 Eleonora Natale from Politecnico di Milano showcased a demonstration of an aqueous Zn Mn flow battery. Her presentation highlighted the potential of this technology to provide sustainable and cost-effective energy storage solutions. 🔋 Zakaria El Koura from Green Energy Storage talked about aligning a hybrid flow battery with IPCEI goals. Zakaria's insights underscore the importance of strategic alignment with industrial and policy objectives to drive innovation and adoption. 🔋 John Alper from VoltStorage gave us an overview of the challenges and advances in iron salt battery technology. 🔋 Liyu Li from Cougar Creek Technologies concluded the session with a compelling discussion on the commercialization of a Fe-Cr complex long-duration flow battery.     We’re scaling up! As a company striving for continuous innovation and breaking into new territories, we are glad to welcome two high-caliber colleagues who strengthen our teams with their expertise, know-how and great personalities:   @Wyatt Bellville joins VoltStorage as a Senior Systems Engineer and will support our team for scaling up the development, testing, and system engineering of our Iron Salt Battery. His dedication to advancing green energy solutions led him to explore iron salt technology as a promising and sustainable option for long-duration energy storage. Prior to coming to us, he thus played a key role as a research and development engineer, specializing in iron salt batteries at US battery manufacturer ESS, Inc. "I am thrilled to contribute to the green energy transition and find iron salt technology particularly promising as a long-duration energy storage #LDES solution," shares Wyatt about his motivation to join VoltStorage.           Julian Lechner comes to VoltStorage as a Senior Product Manager and will work closely with Product Development at the intersection of market, technology and customer experience.    For our company, Julian left Orcan Energy, a developer and manufacturer of compact power plants that generate clean electricity from waste heat. Here, he was responsible for the business development for industrial applications. Julian explains: “If we are serious about clean and renewable energy, we will soon need large storage capacities at grid level to keep the grid flexible and stable. Voltstorage is doing groundbreaking technological work to achieve this, and I am excited to now be a part of this mission.” Welcome on board and have a great start! The development of new technologies such as our #IronSaltBattery - a long-duration energy storage #LDES solution - requires highly precise, accurate data from a wide variety of measuring points in the system. The key here is to obtain reliable, interoperable information that plays a key role in the further development and future performance specifications of the solution.     For this important task we are extremely happy to cooperate with Refex Sensors Long life pH/ Orp Sensors.     What remains after #InterSolar and #ees 2024? Thibault L'Huby, Lead Strategy and Business Development at VoltStorage, reflects on last week´s trade show and conference: Last week's Intersolar and ees 2024 showed immense relevance and rapid advancement of battery technology and renewable energy solutions. Over 3,000 exhibiting companies and more than 100,000 visitors underscore the growing importance of these sectors. Most notable are the following observations: ➡ Long Duration Energy Storage (#LDES) has solidified its role in the battery landscape, offering clear benefits for power system stability and efficiency. A conference at ees Forum that featured industry leaders such as Malta Inc, Energy Vault, CellCube, BASF and also VoltStorage, demonstrated significant investments and innovations in this area. Even lithium-based manufacturers are extending their discharge durations to 8 hours, showcasing the broadening scope of LDES. ➡ #Electrification of Everything: The rise of passenger and truck EVs, along with their substantial infrastructure requirements, is a major driver of grid upgrades. High-power chargers, ranging from 300 kW for cars to 1 MW for trucks, are essential but pose significant challenges for grid stability without adequate flexibility strategies. This trend extends to the broader electrification of various sectors, including residential, commercial, and industrial applications, necessitating comprehensive grid modernization efforts. Batteries (such as LDES) are clearly becoming a cheaper way of upgrading the grid infrastructure and providing the required flexibility.   ➡ #GreenHydrogen Production: The industry is increasingly aware that baseload power is critical for the economical operation of electrolyzers in green hydrogen production. Here, LDES can play a pivotal role in enabling green and cost-effective hydrogen production by providing the necessary power stability without the need for oversized renewable assets. 👉 All in all, there is a high transformative potential of battery storage solutions across various applications. Batteries are becoming a more cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional grid upgrades, providing essential services such as supporting power systems to get to #NetZero in the most economical way and ancillary grid support. In this context, VoltStorage will continue and scale up development of its #IronSaltBattery and promote the economic and operational benefits of battery storage solutions.
