Info
The Vitra Design Museum numbers among the world’s leading museums of design. It is dedicated to the research and presentation of design, past and present, and examines design’s relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. In the main museum building by Frank Gehry, the museum annually mounts two major temporary exhibitions. Smaller parallel shows are presented in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery, a neighbouring exhibition space. Often developed with renowned designers, many of the museum’s exhibitions cover highly relevant contemporary themes, such as future technologies, sustainability or questions like mobility and social awareness. Others address historical aspects or protagonists. The work of the Vitra Design Museum is based on its collection, which encompasses not only key objects of design history, but also the estates of several important figures (including Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard). The museum library and document archive are available to researchers upon request. The museum conceives its exhibitions for touring, and they are shown at venues around the world. On the Vitra Campus, they are complemented by a diverse programme of events, guided tours and workshops.

In a talk on 27 June at 6.30 pm at the Conference Pavilion on the Vitra Campus leading architecture and energy experts Matthias Böttger, Philipp Misselwitz and Christine von Raven will share and discuss their different perspectives on Energyscapes. The talk will be moderated by Jochen Eisenbrand, curator of our current exhibition "Transform! Designing the Future of Energy". Energyscapes emerge where energy is part of our urban, rural, and natural landscapes. Beyond visible energy infrastructures like power stations, wind farms, or solar panels, the term also refers to the invisible energy flows passing through buildings and includes distribution networks as well as renewable energy sources. Free admission; please register at events@design-museum.de The talk will be held in german. #VDMTransform #vitradesignmuseum #energy #design #designexhibition #exhibition #designhistory #designresearch #designlovers #designer #vitracampus #museum #museenbasel #baselmuseums #thisisbasel #basel #weilamrhein Main partner: Sparkasse Sparkasse Markgräflerland Supported by IKEA Foundation Media partner: ARTE Images: Matthias Böttger © Till Budde; Philipp Misselwitz; Jochen Eisenbrand © Vitra Design Museum, Lucia Hunziker; Christine von Raven

Join us for our Design Talk »Futuristic Aesthetics« at the Vitra Campus! As part of the design cooperation between the Vitra Design Museum and Audi Deutschland, we invite designers from different horizons to discuss and exchange their perspectives. On 11 June fashion tech designer Anouk Wipprecht and exterior designer Stephan Fahr-Becker discuss whether and how design can anticipate the future and explore the source of inspiration many designers also find in science fiction. The talk will be moderated by Mateo Kries, Director of the Vitra Design Museum. The talk – held in English – will take place at the Fire Station on the Vitra Campus. Doors open at 6 pm, the talk starts at 7 pm. Free admission, registration via events@design-museum.de. Seating capacities are limited. The talk is part of a paid partnership between the Vitra Design Museum and AUDI AG dedicated to the questions of innovation, progress and sustainability in design, taking new perspectives on the museum’s collection, the Vitra Schaudepot and mutual research themes. Excited to announce our upcoming exhibition at the Vitra Schaudepot: "Science Fiction Design: From Space Age to Metaverse" will present over 100 objects from the museum’s collection in a futuristic display by visual artist and designer Andrés Reisinger. Many designers of objects destined for some type of imagined future seek inspiration in the genre of science fiction. The fascinating dialogue between science fiction and design is the subject of our new exhibition. Supplemented by selected works from the realms of film and literature, the show presents a range of examples from the early twentieth century to the so-called Space Age of the 1960s and ’70s, and even further to recent design objects that have been conceived exclusively for the virtual worlds of the metaverse. #VitraSchaudepot #VDMScienceFiction Join us for the opening of "Science Fiction Design: From Space Age to Metaverse" on May 17, 6 pm, at the Vitra Schaudepot.
