Navigating the future of sea freight: coffee, containers and creative solutions 🚢📦☕ At transport logistic, we know how important a good cup of coffee is to start the day, whether it's a morning meeting with the team or the first customer meeting. We are pleased to inform you that coffee is guaranteed during the four days of the trade fair 😉. But coffee logistics is not just about convenience - it also reflects the trend in the evolving world of sea freight. Beyond the traditional container: as container rates rise to $10,000, logisticians are exploring alternative shipping methods. Traditional container ships are increasingly being replaced by multipurpose vessels. A prime example of this change is a large coffee importer that recently chartered an entire ship to transport 7,000 tonnes of coffee in big bags from Vietnam to Bremen. This quantity would have required 350 twenty-foot containers, which are currently in short supply in Asia. According to Hamburg-based shipbroker Toepfer Transport, this new demand has driven up prices for multi-purpose vessels. Prices for 12,000-tonne vessels with heavy-lift equipment have risen by 1 % and now average $12,639 per day. As conventional container ships become increasingly difficult to find and delays in ports increase, alternative transport methods are becoming more and more important for importers and freight companies. This trend is expected to extend to other goods such as metals, timber and various materials from the Far East that are normally shipped in containers. Positive signs ahead for the German logistics industry: business climate improves The „Logistik-Indikator“ from BVL - Bundesvereinigung Logistik and ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research has just been released and it shows that despite ongoing challenges, experts remain optimistic about the future. The business climate in the German logistics industry has shown signs of improvement in the current quarter compared to the first quarter of the year. The Logistics Indicator by ifo Institute, published by the Bundesvereinigung Logistik (BVL) at the end of each quarter, rose by 2.6 points to 85.6 points. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Wimmer from the #BVL believes that the stage is set for a recovery. "There were also some very optimistic voices at the BVL's advisory board meeting last Thursday," he said. The current data and graphs are based on surveys conducted in April and May. This means that the overall sentiment in the logistics sector is now comparable to that of the third quarter of 2009, when the German economy's recovery from the financial crisis accelerated. It took another year for the 100-point mark to be exceeded again at that time. As always, it’s also interesting to take a look at the sub-indicators and some more news: ✅ All individual indicators for the overall business situation, climate and expectations are rising on both the supplier and demand side. ✅ Business expectation in industry and trade are accelerating strongly and are bypassing the current situation for the first time in years. ✅ The German economic growth in the first quarter has been slightly positive and there is a significant upturn expected to happen in the second half of the year.
