Victory for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing in Brazil TOYOTA GAZOO Racing won the 6 Hours of São Paulo to ignite its 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) title challenge on a dramatic day at Interlagos. At the scene of Toyota’s first-ever hybrid-powered WEC victory in 2012, World Champions Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa earned their first win of the season in the #8 GR010 HYBRID in front of a passionate 73,205 Brazilian crowd. Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries, in the pole position-winning #7 GR010 HYBRID, were on course for victory until a long pit stop for a technical issue dropped them down the field. However, a stunning fight back delivered fourth place and 12 valuable World Championship points. A hard-earned second victory of the year, courtesy of flawless driving, strong team work and a superior tyre strategy, earned maximum points for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and reduced the gap to leaders Porsche to only four points in the manufacturers’ standings with three races remaining in the season.

SUPERSUB ROVANPERÄ CLAIMS REMARKABLE WIN FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Kalle Rovanperä has taken a remarkable victory after his late call-up to Rally Poland, leading a TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team one-two finish ahead of Elfyn Evans. Having never competed there previously, Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen were not originally due to include Poland’s first FIA World Rally Championship round since 2017 on their partial programme this season. That was until Tuesday this week when they received the call to stand in for their team-mates Sébastien Ogier and Vincent Landais, who were unable to take part after they were unfortunately involved in a road traffic collision during reconnaissance. Without any pre-event test or the other preparation typically carried out by WRC crews before an event, the reigning world champions undertook an intense recce schedule during Wednesday and Thursday to make pacenotes for the fast gravel stages, while three runs in shakedown were their only chance to get up to speed in the GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID before the start. They were fourth overall after a challenging first full loop of stages on Friday morning, but Rovanperä soon started to bely his lack of preparation and show the speed he’s famed for on flat-out gravel roads. He was just 1.8 seconds from the lead at the end of Friday, then won Saturday’s first two tests to take over at the top of the leaderboard. Quickest in six out of seven stages across the longest day of the rally, Rovanperä took an advantage of 9.4s into Sunday’s final day over Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai), who then dropped away after incurring damage while trying to keep the pressure on. Third-fastest in the rally-ending Power Stage, he took victory by 28.3s: the 13th and perhaps most impressive WRC victory yet for the driver of car #69 on what was his 69th start in the series. Evans and co-driver Scott Martin were also firmly in the fight for the win for much of the weekend with a strong performance. They were only 0.4s behind their team-mates on Saturday lunchtime, before suffering a tyre issue in the first stage of the afternoon loop that cost them several seconds and dropped them to third place. Evans reclaimed second on Sunday morning as he pushed to maximise their Sunday score, though he would sustain a tyre deflation in the Power Stage that left him seventh-quickest there and fourth in the Super Sunday classification. Nonetheless, he reduces the gap to the leader of the drivers’ championship to 15 points. On his first rally in Poland, Takamoto Katsuta built his confidence and feeling with the car at the start of three consecutive events on fast gravel. He set strong times already on Friday afternoon, before experiencing tough conditions at the front of the road order and ultimately finishing eighth overall. In the manufacturers’ championship, TGR-WRT took the most points from the weekend, moving to within 10 points of the lead.

Rally Italia Sardegna: Day 3 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and Ogier denied in dramatic finish 2024.6.2 (Sun) TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team and Sébastien Ogier looked set to secure a third consecutive victory together at Rally Italia Sardegna before late drama in the final few kilometres of the event meant they missed out by the narrowest of margins. Car 17 (Sébastien Ogier, Vincent Landais) Car 17 (Sébastien Ogier, Vincent Landais) Ogier was involved in a close battle for the lead for most of the event, and while a strong Saturday afternoon enabled him to lead into the final day, competition remained intense on Sunday and just 6.2 seconds separated him and rival Ott Tänak going into the deciding Power Stage. Still, Ogier looked to be doing enough to secure victory until he began losing air from a tyre over the rough final section of stage. It meant that he and co-driver Vincent Landais ultimately missed out by just 0.2s in a finish that equals the closest ever in FIA World Rally Championship history – coincidentally set by Ogier when he beat his now-Team Principal Jari-Matti Latvala by the same margin in Jordan in 2011. Ogier still climbs to fourth place in the drivers’ championship, only 30 points from the lead despite contesting only four of the six rounds held so far. Elfyn Evans has also reduced his gap to the championship leader to 18 points after finishing fourth overall with co-driver Scott Martin. Following a challenging start on Friday, Evans remained consistent to climb up into the top four by the end of Saturday and carried improved pace into the final day to take third in both the Super Sunday classification and the Power Stage, netting 18 points in total. Takamoto Katsuta was running in third position overall on Saturday afternoon before a transmission-related issue forced he and co-driver Aaron Johnston to stop. They restarted on Sunday and set the fifth-best time in the Power Stage. Following its maiden WRC2 victory in Portugal, the GR Yaris Rally2 claimed a second consecutive win on rough gravel roads. Sami Pajari and Enni Mälkönen claimed a commanding triumph in their Printsport-run car while finishing in sixth position overall. Portugal class winners Jan Solans and Rodrigo Sanjuán made it a double podium in third for Teo Martín Motorsport.

OGIER AND TOYOTA GAZOO RACING TRIUMPH AGAIN TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team’s Sébastien Ogier has secured a second successive win with his record-breaking sixth victory at the Rally de Portugal. Just like in the previous round on the asphalt roads of Croatia, Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais triumphed after a thrilling and close battle on Portugal’s gravel stages. Just one second from the lead at the end of Friday, Ogier took over at the front on Saturday morning as others hit trouble, and used all his experience to get through the longest day of the rally with an advantage of 11.9 seconds. He increased his margin with a storming stage win in a foggy first test on Sunday morning, allowing him to apply more caution in the following tests and ultimately take victory by 7.9s. Ogier now has more WRC victories in Portugal than any other driver, having matched Finnish legend Markku Alén’s tally of five wins back in 2017. TGR-WRT meanwhile has now won the last five editions of the event with four different drivers, bringing Toyota level with Lancia and Citroën on eight victories each across the history of the rally. Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin finished sixth overall, securing some important points after a difficult start to the rally on Friday. They faced a further challenge on Sunday after damage to the cooling package in the penultimate stage, but made repairs on the road section to ensure they reached the finish. They remain second in the championship, 24 points from the leaders. Kalle Rovanperä led after Friday but went off the road on Saturday’s second stage. He and Jonne Halttunen restarted on Sunday and took third in the Power Stage, helping to bank some extra points for the team. Takamoto Katsuta was also among those fighting for the lead early on before he too stopped on Saturday morning after picking up damage. He and Aaron Johnston rejoined the action on Sunday and were fifth in the Super Sunday and Power Stage classifications. The manufacturers’ standings remain close after five rounds, with TGR-WRT now four points from the lead. TGR is celebrating a double victory in Portugal after the first WRC2 win for the new GR Yaris Rally2 car on its gravel debut at this level. Jan Solans and co-driver Rodrigo Sanjuan (Teo Martín Motorsport) climbed the order in the highly-competitive category on Saturday and clinched first place by just 3.2s at the finish.

Spa points haul for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing  TOYOTA GAZOO Racing overcame a challenging and eventful 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps to earn a solid result in the third round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in Belgium. In the last race before the Le Mans 24 Hours, the team battled against contact with other cars, penalties, and a performance deficit to secure points in their World Championship defence thanks to a strong effort from drivers, engineers and mechanics. World Champions Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa, in the #8 GR010 HYBRID, finished sixth. Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries followed up their win at Imola with seventh place in their #7 GR010 HYBRID. Although the result brought an end its seven-race winning streak at Spa, the team remains firmly in World Championship contention, second in the standings, just 17 points behind leaders Porsche going into the double-points Le Mans 24 Hours.
