It's a wrap! 🎉 The Südzucker Group R&D and Innovation Conference 2024 has officially come to a close, marking a memorable 20th edition. The Central Department Research, Development & Services (CRDS) had the pleasure of spending two days with colleagues from headquarters in Mannheim and from the Südzucker Sugar Division, BENEO, CropEnergies AG and AGRANA Fruit divisions, as well as from the AGRANA Research & Innovation Center. More than 250 participants attended both physically at the conference center and online via livestream. The participants gained inspiring insights into topics such as innovations, agriculture and food safety interaction, the scientific effects of functional carbohydrates and prebiotic fibers, strategic views into the new business activities regarding biobased chemicals, new developments of products and processes from CRDS as well as strategic assets and developments with smart fermentation within the Südzucker Group. We are already looking forward to next year's conference and continuing our journey of innovation together. 🌍🌱Major Ingredient Players Unite for Sustainable Farming! 🚜 Raffinerie Tirlemontoise - Tiense Suikerraffinaderij, part of Südzucker Sugar Division, BENEO and Puratos have teamed up with Belgian farmers to launch a groundbreaking Climate Farming Project. This initiative is all about championing sustainable farming practices and promoting regenerative agriculture to boost soil health and reduce environmental impact. Running until 2025, the project spans 15 pilot farms across Belgium, focusing on sugar beet, wheat, and chicory cultivation over an area larger than 1,100 football fields! Key strategies include: 🌾 Reducing mineral nitrogen fertilization and pesticide use 🌼 Enhancing biodiversity with flower strips and hedges 🌱 Improving soil fertility and reducing erosion through cover crops Farmers, empowered by the project, are excited to share knowledge and work towards a resilient agricultural future. As Fabrice Flamend from Eghezée says, “We need feasible techniques that consider soil condition, crops, equipment, and profitability. Today we introduce the Connected Collective ✨ Together with our farmers, we have developed a programme to demonstrate how the principles of regenerative agriculture can be applied while at the same time maintaining the overall profitability of regional agriculture. We call this initiative the Connected Collective because we see it as the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in the value chain. The six principles we have adopted are: 🌱Maintenance of year-round soil cover 🌱Reduced tillage intensity 🌱 Fertilization adapted to location and crop 🌱Optimized cultivation with limited input 🌱Promotion of biodiversity inside and outside the cultivated areas 🌱Involvement of Südzucker farmers What does the initiative represent? The aim of the Connected Collective is to be the gateway to creating improvements in close collaboration with our farmers. Our Customers could experience innovative farming practices firsthand during the Sustainable Farming Day at Südzucker's Kirschgartshausen Research Farm. Living farm to fork 👨🌾 🍽 and bringing our customers closer to our farmers - that's the aim of our Sustainable Farming Day at our Kirschgartshausen research farm near Mannheim, Germany. Our experts, Dr Peter Risser and Dr. Georg Vierling hosted the event and shared their insights into Regenerative Agricultural practices. Our customers had the opportunity to visit our demonstration garden, where the effects of crop rotation were displayed. A soil profile showed the different layers of a healthy soil and the depth to which the roots of sugar beet can reach to supply water to the beets without additional irrigation. With this new sugar, current customer needs in terms of naturalness, regionality and less refined raw materials can be fulfilled. Our Raw Beet Sugar is a crystalline, free-flowing brown sugar with similar characteristics to raw cane sugar. However, it is produced in Europe from 100% European sugar beets. Raw Beet Sugar is less refined than white sugar, but has similar technical properties in terms of processability. It is perfect for creating new products for sweet applications such as baked goods 🥐 , chocolate or cereals, cereal bars or savoury applications like barbecue sauces and other condiments. The "Flowerstrips" project is flourishing! 🌺🍀🌸 In the 9th edition of the initiative of Südzucker Polska, part of Südzucker Sugar Division, 120 farms supplying sugar beets to our sugar factories participated. This is a record turnout!   Farmers of Südzucker Polska who decided to join the "Flowerstrips" program received seed mixtures of sweet pea, marigold, sunflower, phacelia, flax, corn poppy, and three varieties of clover. 🌻 When the soil temperature reached eight degrees Celsius, they sowed them on the edges of their beet fields and in areas where beet piles were previously stored.   For sugar beet crops, such "neighbors" are extremely valuable. Flowerstrips are self-sustaining and environmentally friendly - they enrich the soil, filter the air, positively impact rainwater retention, and attract beneficial species of insects and mammals. They also have undeniable visual appeal, which the residents of the areas where our farmers sow the mixtures from the "Flowerstrips" program experience every year.   #sustainablefarming #sugar #sugarbeet #biodiversity

Last week, we invited selected German customers to visit one of our farmers who grows Organic Sugar Beets for Südzucker. The event took place at the Biohof Hausmann and its cultivation areas. During the tour at the farm, the Hausmann family provided insights into organic farming and explained the challenges of converting from a conventional farm to an organic farm. Südzucker informed about organic sugar beet cultivation, the organic certification, regionality and sustainability at Südzucker in general. After a dialogue-filled lunch break, it was time to get practical and head out into the field, where the Südzucker Bodengesundheitsdienst (BGD - soil health service) used a soil profile to explain its work and how it supports farmers. The BGD offers laboratory tests, including soil analyses and fertilizer advice, for the entire spectrum of agriculture and private households throughout Europe. Before returning to the farm, a farm robot from FarmDroid and a video-monitored chopping system were demonstrated live in the field. The direct interaction between our customers, the Hausmann family and colleagues from Südzucker and the Südzucker Bodengesundheitsdienst was highly appreciated by all participants at the event.
