We will introduce you to our team on a regular basis, today we start with our founders: As a former VC, CFO and Head of Business Development Elisabeth L'Orange built a strong track record in developing new markets, raising funds, and building, acquiring, and selling ventures. She studied law and finance and is at home in Germany and the US. She is very passionate about technology- as a little girl, she installed electrical wiring in her dollhouses instead of playing with them. She is very excited to develop Oxolo into the leading deep tech company for AI-based entertainment products. Elisabeth is a mom of three, and in her free time, she likes to craft with her children or play field hockey. Trained as a computer scientist, Heiko Hubertz is seen as a pioneer in the gaming industry. As the CEO of Bigpoint GmbH, Heiko has effectively won over players, distribution partners, and international investors, such as NBCUniversal for the company since 2002. His entrepreneurial acumen and flair for digital trends have not gone unnoticed on the awards front. For example, he won a prize presented by Red Herring TOP 100 Europe, is recognized as one of the Top 10 most important Internet Managers in Germany, and many additional awards. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 🫂💹 The scene in the video portraits a large group of China's society and is a reflection of a sentiment many have: more than one third of the Chinese labor are rural migrant workers, ranging at 297.5 million in 2023 (Statista) and a third of their kids "are left behind" (UNICEF). The video also shows how China's Gen AI scene is taking off and If the video serves as a proxy it shows how much further their tech is compared to the rest of the world. The relative maturity of the Gen AI market also might serve as a precursor for the U.S. and Europe- or will at least demonstrate what works and what won't for us in the future. Not only is China leading in regulatory aspects. They are leading in R&D, in cloud, training data, models and products and most importantly: China is leading in worldwide Gen AI 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 in the enterprise sector which is propelling the AI revolution. 🚀 𝗥&𝗗🧑🏻💻: Last week, a report by the United Nations' World Intellectual Property Organization showed China was leading the GenAI patent race, filing more than 38,000 between 2014 and 2023 against 6,276 filed by the U.S. in the same period. 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 👾: Unlike Germany China manages to convert science into business. While the leading generative AI companies like OpenAI, face restrictions in China, the country has developed a robust domestic industry, with their own models and products from tech giants such as ByteDance. Just take a look at the video- not even SORA from OpenAI can compete. 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 ☁️: The cloud market is already consolidating and a price war is now heating up. As a result Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Baidu are slashing prices on LLMs. Alibaba's cloud unit announced price cuts of up to 97% on a range of its Tongyi Qwen LLMs. Its Qwen-Long model, for instance, will cost only 0.0005¥ per 1,000 tokens - or units of data processed by the LLM - after the price cut, down from 0.02¥ per 1,000 tokens. Bytedance announced last month that the main model of its Doubao LLMs would be priced 99.3% lower than the industry average for business users. 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 💫: According to a survey of 1,600 decision-makers in industries worldwide by U.S. AI and analytics software company SAS and Coleman Parkes Research, 83% of Chinese respondents said they used generative AI. The global average in this study is 54%. The industries surveyed here included banking, insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail and energy. 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 ❓: Conventional wisdom suggests that technological breakthroughs proliferate in an environment of free markets, free speech, and democracy. In the United States alone 1 in 8 people (13%, or 30 million) aged 12 or older has hearing loss in both ears, based on standard hearing examinations, and for many it's debilitating. The total global cost of hearing has been estimated to be at US$981 bn. And the loss in health-related quality of life contributed to 47% of the total cost (McDaid, Park, and Chadha 2021). But magic with AI happens when you combine it with other technologies or hardware. AI can not only augment human capabilities and make the world more inclusive and accessible, especially for people with visual, hearing, and mobility disabilities. 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 🍝 The slightly traumatizing meme-like spaghetti video of Will Smith is only a year old. The second one is created with Kling - the new Chinese video model created by the Kuaishou Big Model Team- and the contrast is stark. China’s latest developments in the text- or image-to-video space 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 that they are quietly ramping up. Diffusion model DynamiCrafter by Tencent, ByteDance’s Magic Video and Baidu’s UniVG have all posted Demos on GitHub but similar to OpenAI’s Sora are not available to the public yet. Alibaba made their video model VGen open source, which makes much sense- many eyes will improve the models significantly better than a small group of engineers. China will have much broader access to training data than the Western world will ever have. Due to centralized control of data, an extremely digitized society, and the size of the population. But it’s not only the sheer access to more training data that makes their models so performant. What’s interesting is how China is trailblazing in GenAI regulations. 🐙 Training data sources must be diversified (i.e. from multiple sources, in different formats, and a reasonable mix of domestic and foreign sources.) Data sources that contain more than 𝟱% 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 may not be used. 🐚 The data content must be filtered through keywords, classification models, and manual sampling. And non-Chinese Models? For anyone planning on launching a foundational in China: You will have to get registered and have the model approved by the authorities first. This particular system simply juxtaposed crashes and bike debris for the Tour de France. We will surely solve the "Black Box Problem" but we as a society will have a lot of responsibility of what we like, share and engage with in the upcoming years. 𝗔𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱- 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁. 𝗗𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗲𝘁? 🌳 AI is about to jump from revolutionizing the digital world to transforming the physical world. This will bring endless benefits, but four areas will be particularly impacted: 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺, 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦. ⚡️The energy needed is substantial. AI requires staggering amounts of computing power- especially for training. The necessary #GPUs run very hot (and therefore need cooling) so data centers, servers and data transmission networks currently account for 1.5% of global carbon emissions. Microsoft alone increased their consumption by 30% over three years. The IMF aka the international lender of last resort just released a report on said energy consumption and CO2 emissions. It stated that governments need to consider a range of policies to mitigate the negative impact AI brings on the labor market and environment. A carbon tax on AI-generated emissions to account for it would be a solution. The impact on the labor market is still to be seen, but the common belief that AI will mainly impact white-collar professions such as law, finance and medicine is probably outdated. 👔👷♂️ The IMF added that manufacturing or blue-collar jobs could also be severely hit- which is probably true looking at the speed of advancements in robotic and automation. The IMF estimates about 60% of jobs in advanced economies such as the US and UK are exposed to AI and half of these jobs may be negatively affected. 💡In my opinion the external environmental and societal costs will rise globally but gains are in private hands concentrated among very few key players located in the United States. With an AI Carbon tax we could redistribute the cost and mitigate the damage it has on society and climate a little bit. What do you think Dr. Fabian Heilemann?
