Invasive Infektionen wie eine #Sepsis müssen umgehend und zielgerichtet behandelt werden. Fachleuten des Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB ist es gelungen, gemeinsam mit Verbundpartnern ein neu gedachtes Nachweisprinzip zu etablieren, das durch schnelle, hochpräzise #Erregeridentifikation entscheidend dazu beitragen kann, Leben zu retten. Für diese Leistung wurden Dr. Kai Sohn, Abteilungsleiter In-vitro-Diagnostik am Fraunhofer IGB, Prof. Dr. Thorsten Brenner, MHBA von der Universitätsmedizin Essen sowie Dr. Silke Grumaz und Dr. Philip Stevens von der Noscendo GmbH mit dem Wissenschaftspreis des Stifterverbands 2024 im Rahmen der Fraunhofer-Jahrestagung geehrt. ***Erregeridentifikation – optimierte Diagnostik dank Next Generation Sequencing*** Invasive Infektionen wie #Sepsis müssen schnell und zielgerichtet behandelt werden. Forschende des Fraunhofer IGB haben zusammen mit weiteren Verbundpartnern ein neues Nachweisprinzip entwickelt, das durch schnelle und präzise #Erregeridentifikation helfen kann, Leben zu retten. Dafür erhielten sie den #Wissenschaftspreis des Stifterverbandes 2024. Eine aktuelle Studie zeigt, dass eine Sepsis (#Blutvergiftung) alle sechs Minuten ein Menschenleben in Deutschland fordert. Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik #IGB hat in Zusammenarbeit mit führenden klinischen Netzwerken sowie dem Biotechnologieunternehmen Noscendo GmbH ein Verfahren zur Erreger-Identifizierung bei Intensivpatienten entwickelt, das eine schnelle #Behandlung invasiver #Infektionen ermöglicht. Dafür wurden Dr. Kai Sohn, Abteilungsleiter In-vitro-Diagnostik am Fraunhofer IGB, Prof. Dr. Thorsten Brenner, MHBA vom Universitätsklinikum Essen sowie Dr. Silke Grumaz und Dr. Philip Stevens von der Noscendo GmbH ausgezeichnet. Bislang werden Sepsis-#Erreger meist nach kultureller Anzucht mit Hilfe massenspektrometrischer Verfahren identifiziert. Jedoch ist die Kultivierung zeitaufwendig und die Organismen lassen sich nur in weniger als 30% der Fälle nachweisen. Die neue Methode analysiert hingegen nicht die Sepsis-Auslöser selbst, sondern deren #DNA-Fragmente im Blut und vergleicht diese mit einer spezifisch entwickelten Datenbank, welche Genome von #Bakterien, #Viren, #Pilzen und anderen Erregern enthält. Mit diesem hoch zuverlässigen und präzisen Verfahren können bis zu 70 Prozent der Erreger erfolgreich bestimmt werden. »Allein in den letzten vier Jahren konnte über 6000 Patientinnen und Patienten durch unsere #Diagnostik geholfen werden«, freut sich Bioinformatiker Dr. Philip Stevens. »Die Betroffenen können das Krankenhaus deutlich schneller verlassen und sind weniger Langzeitwirkungen ausgesetzt. Happy to share that I (together with Prof. Dr. Thorsten Brenner, MHBA , Silke Grumaz and Dr. Kai Sohn) received the "Wissenschaftspreis des Stifterverbandes" price ( https://lnkd.in/eH9gUG9Y) for our work in diagnosing life threatening infections. Hopefully this helps creating more awareness for the problem especially #Sepsis poses (up to 1.2 million cases per year in Germany alone) and the need for new ways of thinking and new approaches to tackle this.
