Importance of Colostrum in Swine The most critical period in the life cycle of a pig is from birth to weaning. High mortality and morbidity of neonatal pigs is a very serious challenge to the swine industry today. More than 60 % of all swine mortality deaths occur during the suckling period or within the first few days of life. The growing fertility of today's breeding sows exacerbates the problem, as larger litters typically result in lower birth weights. This eventually leads to a higher proportion of underweight and weak piglets. Newborn piglets have an energy deficit due to low glycogen reserves and, at the same time, high energy requirements for thermoregulation and physical activity. Based on this situation, piglets need a quick boost of energy and nutrients to put them on the right track to health and growth in an economical way.
