Science and Sport: Menlo's videos are the perfect accompaniment and motivation for your exercise regime! Since the pandemic changed how we share new breakthroughs and exciting applications, webinars have become a useful tool to communicate with each other. But it turns out, webinars are the perfect accompaniment while you exercise – exercising the body and the mind at the same time. We received this great photo from Cees Links from our partner SuperLight Photonics (Mr. Wifi!), who watches our webinars and YouTube content while exercising on the cross-trainer. Yesterday, he watched a demo video about our Optical Reference System: “Heterodyne beat between two ultrastable laser systems ORS and ORS Compact.” Cees shared: “Combining usefulness and pleasure, watching a Menlo Systems training video while exercising on the cross-trainer: staying fit and expanding in the wonder world of photonics!” Thank you, Cees, for your enthusiasm! What’s your favorite accompaniment for exercise? https://lnkd.in/evvR9jph https://lnkd.in/eik8ZmNa #ScienceAndSport #UltrastableLaser #OpticalReferenceSystem #UltrastableLaser #Photonics #QuantumTechnology

NEW: “Four Eyes Probe the Skies” – Application News. Recent research from Lily L. Zhao at the Center for Computational Astrophysics in the Flatiron Institute and Jason Wright from the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics, Penn State University has compared spectral data from four different spectrographs at observatories around the world. The aim was to determine whether light emanating from a star’s surface is detected completely unperturbed, or if is affected by the interaction with orbiting planets – information which could aid the search for earth-like exoplanets. The team analyzed light from our own sun, measuring the magnitude of the Doppler shift as accurately as possible with the four different spectrographs. Essential to the measurements was the calibration of the spectrographs, three of which were calibrated using Menlo Systems' AstroComb. The AstroComb, a special type of optical frequency comb, provides a stable and known set of evenly-spaced spectral lines that act as reference points across a wide wavelength range, illuminating individual pixels of the spectrograph. This week we had the pleasure to host students from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and the SAOT - Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies at Menlo Systems' headquarters in Martinsried. The visit was organized by the Erlangen Optica Student Chapter and provided the students with insights into the technology and product portfolio of Menlo, as well as currently ongoing research and development projects. In a series of lab tours and a “meet and greet” networking session between Menlo team members from R&D, sales and services, and business development, the students could get a feel for research into precision metrology and quantum technologies. The visit also allowed the students to gain insight into the work life and career opportunities at Menlo Systems and in industry in general. #ProfessionalDevelopment #Careers #PrecisionMetrology #QuantumTechnology European Physical Society Optica

NEW Application News: Clock pairs for higher stability. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of California, Berkeley, USA, have realized a new kind of multiplexed optical atomic clock for high-precision frequency measurements in a portable format. The team, led by Shimon Kolkowitz, significantly reduced the deteriorating effect of laser instability on clock performance by comparing pairs of strontium optical clocks “multiplexed” within a single optical lattice. They used Menlo Systems' ORS Ultrastable Laser as the shared clock laser, and were able to remarkably improve the clock comparison measurement, resulting in a 270-fold gain in coherence time. This led to improved precision in clock comparison measurements, equivalent to a difference of 1 second in 300 billion years between the rates of two clocks - about 20 times the age of the universe. Their findings demonstrate that state-of-the-art precision measurements can be achieved using a commercially-available, portable ultrastable laser system, which holds great promise for the wide application of high-precision instrumentation, even in remote places. https://lnkd.in/eNEXv4fd https://lnkd.in/gMUBn8c https://lnkd.in/eD-Kpr7h [Images from: Nature 602, 425–430 (2022). https://lnkd.in/e_mTPVxY] #OpticalClock #UltrastableLaser #PrecisionMetrology
