🧿The color blue is as coveted as it is rare in nature. 🔵🔵Ribbon-tailed stingrays get their intense blue spots from the regular 3D arrangement of specific skin cells that reflect blue wavelengths.🔵🔵 Scientists envision mimicking this mechanism to produce colors without pigments and dyes. 🎨 https://lnkd.in/dNWZJTeT Venkata A. Synthetic #nanomaterials with ad hoc properties and shapes from sugars? ❗ New insights into how complex sugars aggregate and arrange themselves make mimicking their properties a more likely scenario.❗ Scientists have: 1) synthesized unprecedentedly long chains of sugars (specifically: #cellulose, #chitin, and #xylan). The key addition: #phosphates (to keep the building blocks apart) 2) used #enzymes to remove the phosphates and assemble these sugar chains into different shapes (plate-like, spiral, and hexagonal) 3) observed the sugar chains with powerful microscopes Results: ➡️The type& position of the sugars in the chain directly affects its final shape. ➡️Enzymes can trigger the formation of sugar structures 📰 https://lnkd.in/e5GQN8ct Paper in Angewandte Chemie by Jaap van Trijp, Nives Hribernik, Jia Hui Lim, Marlene Dal Colle, Yadiel Vázquez Mena, Yu Ogawa, Martina Delbianco

How can #bacteria shimmer? And how can we use their mechanisms to envision #sustainable, #pigment-free colors? ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eAz6xXqY Scientists sequenced a wide range of bacterial DNA and identified several proteins associated with the formation of #structuralColor = iridescent hues that change depending on the internal, periodic arrangement of nano-scale building blocks and their interference with light. (🫧Think of a soap bubble or the wings of a peacock).🦚 The team wants to take color out of the lab and into the industry: bacteria take up little space, are easy to feed, and multiply quickly. We could grow them to produce colors and ditch dyes and pigments that require a lot of energy and water, and are sometimes toxic. Aldert Zomer, Colin Ingham, F.A.
