What does arithmetic have to do with intercultural competence? This small experiment might make it all clear for you, even if you are struggling to see the link between those two things right now! Take a look at the image below. There you have twelve simple math problems. Try to solve as many of them as you can in 15 seconds. How did you do? Now let’s make it a little more difficult! Imagine the meaning of the arithmetic symbols is different from what you are used to and use the following new rules to solve the problems, again in 15 seconds: ➕= ➗ ➗=✖️ ✖️= ➖  ➖= ➕ Now how was it? 😬 The feeling you likely experienced is not at all dissimilar to how it feels to interact with a culture you are unfamiliar with. It shows what happens when the rules you are used to suddenly no longer apply – exactly what we often experience in intercultural situations! ⚠️ Mind the (skill) gap! ⚠️ With changes in the world of work happening quicker and more often than ever, the set of skills required for any job can change seemingly overnight. This leads to a phenomenon known as a 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗮𝗽. A skill gap occurs when the existing skills of employees do not match the skills needed for their role anymore. 𝗜𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹?
