Thuringian Minister-President Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke) Visits Koehler Paper at its Greiz mill 🤝 The Thuringian Minister-President, Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke), visited the Koehler Paper site in Greiz as part of his summer tour together with Holger Steiniger, Chairman of the Greiz City Council, Alexander Frieß and Leon Walter, direct candidate (Die Linke). The talks centered on the local, but also national needs of the paper manufacturer, which sells its high-quality recycled paper to the whole world from its site in Greiz. The company’s climate strategy was also a subject of discussion. Bodo Ramelow was enthusiastic about the sustainable corporate policy: “We need companies like Koehler that are committed and courageous. We have saved 4.55 million kWh of electricity through energy efficiency measures! 💪🔋 In our paper production, we have saved around 4,551,523 kilowatt hours of electricity in 2022 through energy efficiency measures. Since we first recorded the parameters in 2003, we have reduced specific electricity consumption by around 22 percent per ton of ready-to-sell paper. The topic of logistics plays a major role when it comes to sustainability. Koehler Paper is keen to continue shifting more goods to rail. Unfortunately, however, there are always major hurdles to overcome. 🚆 At the 20th VDV and DSLV marketplace event in Siegburg/Germany, Andreas Riedlinger, Head of Logistics at Koehler, was able to point out the various problems. In the past, for example, six kilometers of track were removed from the Kehl freight station around the Koehler Paper plant in Kehl, which are now urgently needed and are simply missing. Among other things, Andreas Riedlinger is bewildered by the fact that the temporary/extension tracks required for the construction phase of the "POS Süd" rail project are being built, but will have to be dismantled again later. "In order to shift volumes from road to rail in the long term, we need pragmatic and solution-oriented concepts, which must be developed and implemented together with shippers from the industry," suggests the Head of Logistics of the Koehler Group. He adds: "There is no lack of will on the part of the industry! In addition to regulatory issues, the reliability of rail as a mode of transport plays a decisive role here - which is unfortunately currently being disrupted by many factors and can severely disrupt supply security and the flow of goods." Koehler will continue to make great efforts to promote rail as a mode of transport in order to pursue its own goals and those of the transport transition in the long term and to make a positive contribution to the climate strategy. 🌿 #koehlerpaper #paperforthefuture #climatestrategy

How does Koehler contribute to climate change mitigation? 🌍💪 Back in 2014 already, we set an ambitious goal to produce more renewable energy than we need for paper production by 2030. We are pushing the expansion of renewable energy production forward and further reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. This way, we are making a positive long-term contribution to climate change mitigation and energy security. With this field of action we are contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7. An era comes to an end: Last piece of coal fired at Oberkirch combined heat and power plant 💪 🌿 At its Oberkirch site, the Koehler Group is investing in the expansion and conversion of its power plant in order to use environmentally friendly biomass as fuel. The large-scale project hit another milestone in the beginning of June: After 38 years, the last piece of coal was burned at the Oberkirch combined heat and power plant. The power plant is now stopped, and extensive overhauling and conversion work for switching over to biomass fuel has been going full speed ahead since June 10th. The commissioning and testing phase will start in mid-August, and the power plant should run on environmentally friendly biomass starting in October. Koehler Group CEO Kai Furler explains: “For us, decarbonization of our coal-fired power plant in Oberkirch is another crucial step in our efforts to achieve our climate goals and produce more renewable energy than we need for our paper production operations starting in 2030.” #koehlerpaper #paperforthefuture #koehlerrenewableenergy
