Career opportunities at the world's most productive astronomical observatory.
Info
ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and is supported by 16 member-states along with the host state of Chile and with Australia as a Strategic Partner. ESO's main mission, laid down in the 1962 Convention, is to provide state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and astrophysicists, allowing them to conduct front-line science in the best conditions. By building and operating a suite of the world's most powerful ground-based astronomical telescopes enabling important scientific discoveries, ESO offers numerous possibilities for technology spin-off and transfer, together with high technology contract opportunities and is a dramatic showcase for European industry. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three unique observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor.

If you are planning to submit an abstract for the MUSE24 workshop, remember that the deadline is Monday 15 July! Going well beyond the 10th anniversary of our Very Large Telescope's instrument MUSE, this workshop is an opportunity to reflect on the many successes and challenges such an instrument triggered. The workshop will take place on 18 - 22 November 2024 at the ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich (Germany) and remotely. The deadline for registration and fee payment is 30 September 2024. Today we've reached a new milestone in the construction of our Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), with the signing of the contract for the production of the ELT's M5 commissioning mirror! Under construction in Chile's Atacama Desert, the ELT will have a pioneering five-mirror optical design that will allow it to observe the Universe in unprecedented detail. Like the rest of the ELT, the final mirror in the design, M5, is pushing technology to its limits. The M5 blank was recently completed and will be polished next. Since a mirror of this kind has never been produced before, there are risks associated with its manufacturing that could lead to delays. Should such production delays occur, the M5 commissioning mirror will be used as the fifth mirror of the design for the first few months of ELT operation, planned for the end of the decade. This will allow scientists to conduct the necessary observations to test and calibrate the telescope's systems and demonstrate its performance. Our Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is one step closer to completion! Too large to be made from a single piece of glass, the ELT primary mirror (M1) will instead consist of 798 hexagonal segments and 151 extra ones. Now, the blank for the last segment has been successfully cast, the blanks being shaped pieces of material that are later polished to become the mirror segments. Once polished and assembled in Europe, each M1 segment is shipped across the ocean to reach the ELT Technical Facility at our Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert. A 10,000-kilometre journey that over 70 M1 segments have already completed. Discover more: https://lnkd.in/eZ9EeS-3 📷 SCHOTT #ELTprogress

Check out the video below 👇 and discover CTAO , which once completed will be the most powerful ground-based observatory for very high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. Consisting of two arrays of telescopes, including one at our Paranal Observatory in Chile, CTAO will study some of the most powerful objects in the cosmos, such as supermassive black holes and supernovae.
Over the past decade, a dedicated team of more than 1,500 scientists and engineers from around the world have been working together to push the boundaries of gamma-ray astronomy. It's a massive endeavor. So how are they doing it? By bringing together their expertise and resources to create the world's largest and most technologically advanced gamma-ray Observatory: the CTAO. ✨ With its unprecedented performance, the CTAO is expected to reveal an entirely new view of the very high-energy Universe. And with the Observatory's recent phase of growth, we are now closer than ever to making groundbreaking discoveries. 🌌 Curious to learn more? Head over to our YouTube channel to watch our latest film where you’ll hear about the global effort to build the CTAO from some of the people behind the project. This is part of a series of films about the CTAO.
