Scientists from a collaboration including the Bachmann group at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg used an Arradiance GEMStar™ ALD system to deposit the platinum cathode and iridium anode of a proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. ALD coats complex, 3D surfaces uniformly and with excellent thickness control, preventing waste of these costly metals. Establishing a hydrogen economy to fuel the clean energy transition depends on energy efficient, cost-effective hydrogen production. Hydrogen is produced in PEM fuel cells, which use electricity to break water into hydrogen and oxygen. The cylindrical PEM cell with ALD-deposited electrodes survived 500 hours of testing, demonstrating the promise of ALD in PEM fuel cells. The GEMStar™ ALD system features pressurized precursor bottle technology, the ability to isolate the chamber from the pump, and a hot-wall reactor to enable fuel cell research.
