How can a vertical SaaS become a fintech company? 🤔 Today's podcast episode should be "must listen" for every strategy / product person at a vertical SaaS company - but yes we might be biased ;) We are speaking with Mews' CEO Matthijs Welle about how his hotel-focused SaaS company turned into a fintech business: 🏨 Mews targets hotels and provides them the technical backbone to operate. The startup is based in the Netherlands and achieved unicorn status in March 2024 with a $110 million fundraise. 🛎️ Initially the company focused purely on SaaS and was collaborating with payment providers. When they understood the opportunity, they started to bring the payment stack in-house. 🧳 In recent years they added lending and are exploring a wide range of other financial services. Which ones? Listen to the podcast and find out. You can find the episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and many other podcasting apps (link in comments). And if you liked the episode, please leave a rating in your podcasting app. 🙏 What did you think about this edition? What other topics should we cover?

🤔 Can utility providers embed investment products? Find out in the newest podcast episode! (Link in comments) In this episode, I spoke with Iven Kurz from German asset manager and investment solution provider Evergreen GmbH. It all started at the last Embedded Finance Review event in April, where we chatted and he told me about a few interesting non-financial brands that are considering to embed investment products. I immediately asked him, if he wants to share the story in a podcast episode. We spoke about: - Why Evergreen started to engage with non-financial brands - How big the embedded finance opportunity for Evergreen could be - What type of non-financial brands could consider to offer investment products - Why utility providers and travel companies are well positioned and what their embedded finance product could look like I hope you enjoy the podcast episode! If you have any thoughts or personal experience in the space, please reach out. I am happy to continue the conversation.

We launched a podcast! 🎙️ The world of embedded finance keeps evolving, and there are so many insightful stories out there. Stories that others could learn from if they knew about them. With our newly launched podcast, we aim to amplify these stories! We invite any company in embedded finance (non-financial brands, infrastructure providers or banks) to reach out to us if you think you have an interesting story to tell. In our first episode, we spoke with Michael Zyber, who is the CEO of METRO Financial Services. Metro is a decades-old German corporation that launched a de-coupled debit card a few years ago. Why did they do that? And how did they approach this challenge? Listen to our first episode (link in the comments) and find out!

The latest Embedded Finance Review newsletter just went out to 1,103 subscribers. This edition includes a lot of BaaS news from around the world: A German BaaS just filed for insolvency, and an US BaaS filed for insolvency many weeks ago but is still fighting publicly with their former bank partner. Additionally, Visa aims for nothing less than to reinvent the card, Stripe opens a new UK office and announces new products, Fabrick acquires finAPI and Nory closes Series A. My favorite podcast was the story of Jacqueline Reses and how she transformed a century old community bank into a fintech company. And HSBC UK announced a reverse embedded finance launch. In the insightful section, I featured an US BaaS deep dive from Contrary Research and an article from Meaghan Johnson where she discusses with Alex Mifsud and Paul Staples the question whether embedded finance providers can sell to startups and enterprises at the same time. And finally, I shared two new embedded finance projects on which I am working. Do you want to know more? Check the link in the comment 👇

✍️ The newest Embedded Finance Review edition follows the rule: I didn't have time to write a short newsletter, so I wrote a long one instead 🙃 In this edition, I covered bezahl.de (NX Technologies GmbH) funding announcement and looked a little bit closer at the trend of vertical providers. (and yes, I currently work at the company and write about them as well; check the newsletter intro message for some background around this). Additionally, I shared Solaris SE's strong funding announcement and discussed where the company is headed. All-in on co-branded credit card deals? And the insightful section is full of content targeting banks to enter embedded finance. Will we see a new movement here? You can find the newsletter in the comment section. What do you think about the most recent developments in embedded finance? Where is the industry heading?
